FFmpeg & Libav Add H.265 Encoder Via x265

FFmpeg & Libav Add H.265 Encoder Via x265 | Logan's Tech | Scoop.it

FFmpeg and its forked Libav have each added an H.265 / HEVC encoder today to their respective code-bases.

Going back to the middle of last year there's been the open-source x265 project for implementing the High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) video format that succeds H.264/MPEG-4 AVC. We have also seen open-source HEVC / H.265 support come via libde265 as a decoder for this video format that doubles the data compression ratio of H.264 while at the same video quality level.

Adobe Primetime 2.0 for Android with 4K and MPEG-DASH support

Adobe Primetime 2.0 for Android with 4K and MPEG-DASH support | Logan's Tech | Scoop.it

“Primetime has become the leading platform to deliver and monetize TV Everywhere at scale for broadcasters and pay-TV providers,” said Jeremy Helfand, vice president, Primetime, Adobe. “This new release of Primetime takes advantage of the latest industry innovations and introduces new capabilities that drive strong viewer engagement and greater flexibility for monetization.”

New capabilities in Adobe Primetime include:

Cloud ad insertion offers maximum device scale and enables content monetization on any connected device without requiring client code for ad insertion. The technology supports all TV content and is compatible with HLS to deliver any ad to any viewer on any screen. The existing client-side ad insertion capability, which ensures that broadcasters don’t have to tap into large server capacities to reach large audiences, combined with cloud ad insertion, makes Primetime the industry’s only delivery and format agnostic solution for content monetization. It also offers maximum flexibility and scale for companies that sell TV ads across devices. Primetime cloud ad insertion is available today.

4K support ensures that Primetime customers can deliver the highest resolution content to the latest set of digital home devices allowing consumers to enjoy stunning viewing experiences. Primetime leverages the latest UHDTV hardware capabilities to ensure fully optimized performance. Support for 4K is being previewed at NAB and is expected to ship in 2014.

Primetime 2.0 also offers support for the new MPEG-DASH streaming format in its core video engine layer. Support of the new industry standard gives programmers and operators the flexibility to deliver consistent video experiences across devices using their preferred format. MPEG-DASH support will ship by the end of 2014.

In addition to desktop operating systems, SmartTVs, Android and iOS devices, Primetime 2.0 now supports XBox 360 gaming consoles and Roku devices.

Adobe continues to advance industry partnerships for Primetime. Adobe and thePlatform announced a partnership today to integrate thePlatform’s mpx video management system, including its Player Development Kit (PDK) with Adobe Primetime, across all devices supported by Primetime. This partnership offers seamless integration for joint customers, increasing viewer engagement, and reducing time to market and total cost of ownership.

Open source HEVC encoder project website launched

Open source HEVC encoder project website launched | Logan's Tech | Scoop.it

Vantrix today officially launched their open source HEVC project website, f265.org. The f265 project was previously announced as an open source version of the H.265 encoder, also known as High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC). The project aims to accelerate the industry-wide development and adoption of H.265 through a collaborative and free open source model. The project website is now officially available for researchers and commercial entities to obtain the source code and contribute to the refinement and evolution of the code to accelerate the implementation of both software and hardware systems.

Vantrix’s f265 encoder will be licensed under the OSI BSD terms, enabling access to source code, free redistribution, and derived works. The project will target both high quality offline and real-time encoding.

“The f265.org site is maintained by and for developers to help accelerate the development and adoption of HEVC,” noted Francis Labonte, Vantrix research lab director. “We have a working baseline version available that we’ve been demonstrating for UHD/4k live streaming and now want to take the real-time performance and feature set to the next level. We’re hoping to contribute to accelerating the industry transition from H.264 to H.265 and solving network bandwidth issues for high definition video.”

Why wait for bandwidth savings from HEVC, Crunch AVC 50% today!

Why wait for bandwidth savings from HEVC, Crunch AVC 50% today! | Logan's Tech | Scoop.it

The digital video industry seems to be gradually succumbing to the allure of the 50% bandwidth savings promised by HEVC, aka h.265. What if those savings can be achieved with the existing AVC, h.264, technology? Cinova thinks its post-processing product, Crunch, can do just that.

The benefits the video industry can realize from a reduction of 50% in the amount of bandwidth necessary to deliver video are enormous. From saving money in bandwidth charges to delivering higher quality video on mobile networks, there are few places in the chain of delivery that don’t benefit in some way.

However, the cost and time required to move to a new codec, like HEVC, are similarly enormous. Devices such as televisions, set-top boxes and smartphones need to be replaced, video encoders upgraded, not to mention all the video that needs to be re-encoded in the new format. The change from MPEG2 encoding to AVC based MPEG4 took the better part of a decade. Likely, HEVC adoption will take a similar length of time.

Sunil Sanghavi, COO of Cinova, believes there is a lot more efficiency to be wrung out of AVC, and that it will get us to 50% savings right now.
