Top 10 mobile technologies and capabilities for 2015 and 2016 | Information Age

Top 10 mobile technologies and capabilities for 2015 and 2016 | Information Age | Context-Aware Mobile, Location-Based Services & Cybersecurity | Scoop.it
Organisations wishing to unlock the full potential of mobility must master a wide range of technologies and skills, many of which are unfamiliar to IT staff
AirPatrol's insight:

Naturally we're in agreement on #4 -- though we think it should be higher. A few things seem off, however.  Imaging and light beacons require you to be holding the device in plain sight (as opposed to carrying it in your pocket) which makes their usefulness limited. Geomagnetics (using the Earth's magnetic field to guide you) sounds neat, but anyone who's been in a steel building or one with paramagnetic materials (e.g., iron, nickel, cobalt, manganese, etc.) nearby knows they cause all kinds of interference. I doubt either of these will become predominant in location-based sensing.

Bluetooth (Bluetooth Smart / BLE) has a lot of possibilities, but it has its own problems. First, the vast majority of mobiles don't fully implement the BT4 spec (the iPhone 4S/5S and a few Androids being exceptions), so it'll be a while before enough people have it. Second beacons don't actually provide location, they provide "postion" -- and it's their position, not yours. Fine if you're standing in front of the thing looking at it, but not particularly useful if it's on the other side of a wall, street, or somewhere else you can't see it. Finally, Bluetooth beacons don't do anything other than report their position, it's up to an App to decide what to do with that information, which means you're going to get a proliferation of apps -- all of which you need to give permission to -- which isn't just annoying, it also increases security risks (you device is only as secure as the least secure app on your phone).

Long term Cellular and WiFi will remain the location tools of choice since 100% of cell phones have it and a good portion have WiFi -- both of which can provide your actual location (as opposed to beacon position) and can therefore be used to direct you to things even if you can't see them.

If You Haven't Updated to iOS 7.0.6, Do it NOW so You Don't Get Hacked

If You Haven't Updated to iOS 7.0.6, Do it NOW so You Don't Get Hacked | Context-Aware Mobile, Location-Based Services & Cybersecurity | Scoop.it
Apple recently tried to patch up a security flaw that left iOS devices open to hacking.
AirPatrol's insight:

"Apple recently caught a bug in its software that allowed hackers to infiltrate IOS users' encrypted messages..."

Actually, the flaw was uncovered by security firm Crowdstrike and it wasn't a "bug" it was a piece of bad coding that didn't do the proper checks on SSL certificates. Moreover, it's the second security flaw discovered in IOS in as many weeks (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/apple/10660203/Second-Apple-iOS-security-flaw-exposed.html).

Moral of the story is: don't assume because it's Apple, it's secure. Apple isn't used to attacks the way Microsoft and Google are, so their security stance is no where near as vigilant. The more popular iPhones/iPads get, the riper the targets become.

Mostly when I hear "selfie" I think of some teenage girl posing and taking a picture of herself in the bathroom mirror. This story, however, illustrates how the "selfie" isn't always blatant narcissism -- sometimes it's a social tool that can help with decisions, benefit businesses and reward the one taking the photo all at the same time.

How to build for a world where you’re connected to hundreds of devices

How to build for a world where you’re connected to hundreds of devices | Context-Aware Mobile, Location-Based Services & Cybersecurity | Scoop.it
Ahead of our Mobilize event Oct. 16 and 17, we asked experts how 50 billion connected devices and 6 billion people change their industry. In this essay PARC’s Mike Kuniavsky tackles the topic of programming.
AirPatrol's insight:

I think one of the most important points made here is the idea of "giving up control." Right now we have to manage all these "devices" ourselves because they're basically dumb and completely unaware of context (social, work, home, etc.). As devices get smarter -- or at least more aware of context and location, they're doing to be able to take a lot of actions with us specifically have to make them do so -- e.g. "tell the car to unlock and start," "let the hotel know I'm here,", "load the presentation,", "pay for the shoes."

It's at the point when we de-complicate these interactions by not having to control everything that these systems will really break wide open.
