Robert Scoble: The more uproars over terms of service we see, the less any of them matter | PandoDaily | Localization, User Experience, Marketing Research | Scoop.it
Suddenly Robert Scoble’s hard fought 300,000 followers didn’t look so impressive next to Ashton Kutcher yawning, rolling out of bed and getting 13 million followers. The balance of power and what Twitter was all about inexorably shifted.
Michael Stevens's insight:

Great perspective on why these companies exist, to reach and influence people...as history teaches that can be good or bad.  Those of us users can be very passionate about how we believe companies should move forward, but at the end of the day they will decide whether listening will affect adoption. "It was always owned by entrepneurs and VCs and meant to belong to the world."

HTC's China strategy--a lesson in localization

HTC's China strategy--a lesson in localization | Localization, User Experience, Marketing Research | Scoop.it
The Taiwan-based smartphone maker isn't doing very well this year, but it has taken steps to try to secure success in a very important market--China.
Michael Stevens's insight:

A "China-only" model is a good strategy, perhaps more companies will get the message that not everyone is the same. Now HTC is in Tawian and they find it necessary to customize the product for China, inspite of the many cultural similarities.

Bargain basement usability testing

Bargain basement usability testing | Localization, User Experience, Marketing Research | Scoop.it
There is a lot written about usability testing both online and off. However, except for "Don’t Make Me Think" by Steve Krug they all seem to make it sound very complicated and expensive. So here is...
Michael Stevens's insight:

Love the practical nature of finding out how people use and/or respond to products.  Think about it the easier your product is to use and be understood the more people who will use it.  If you know it is hard you can either change or teach.

MPs dismayed by 'total chaos' of £42m lost in translation | Localization, User Experience, Marketing Research | Scoop.it
A drive to save money on court interpreters degenerated into "total chaos" yet the firm responsible for the shambles was only fined a "risible" £2,200, a withering report by MPs has found.
Michael Stevens's insight:
Favorite quote on this one "A man who was charged with perverting the course of justice was told he was actually accused of being a "pervert"." for all we know he could have been both. Importance of knowing who you are as a company especially in localization/translation/interpretation and the terrible consequences not knowing could have.
