How sniffing rosemary could boost your brain power

How sniffing rosemary could boost your brain power | LOCAL HEALTH TRADITIONS | Scoop.it
Cognitive performance improves when a compound in the herb’s oil – 1, 8-cineole – is absorbed into blood, according to the University of Northumbria.

‘This compound is present in rosemary but has not previously been demonstrated to be absorbed into blood plasma in humans,’ he added.

‘It is our view that the aroma therefore acts like a therapeutic drug, rather than any effects being a result of the more sensory properties of the aroma.’

Moss reminds that it’s easy to forget how many of our therapeutic drugs are the result of plant science. His team will continue to investigate the therapeutic benefits of several common plants, including peppermint and lavender.

Counties with thriving small businesses have healthier residents, researchers find

Counties with thriving small businesses have healthier residents, researchers find | LOCAL HEALTH TRADITIONS | Scoop.it
Counties and parishes with a greater concentration of small, locally-owned businesses have healthier populations — with lower rates of mortality, obesity and diabetes — than do those that rely on large companies with 'absentee' owners, according to...

"What stands out about this research is that we often think of the economic benefits and job growth that small business generates, but we don't think of the social benefits to small communities," said Troy C. Blanchard, Ph.D., lead author and associate professor of sociology at LSU. "This study highlights not only the economic benefits of small business, but its contributions to health and well-being."

People who live in sunny places may have a lower risk of stroke, new research suggests.

The researchers believe it is the first to show an association between sunlight and stroke.

A previous study suggests salmon, eggs, tuna, and other vitamin D-rich foods may help protect against stroke and memory loss.

Two studies on the subject were presented at the American Stroke Association’s International Stroke Conference 2012.

CLEAN YOUR KIDNEYS AT NO OR LOW COST

This little beauty was sent by my dear friend TC James.

"Here is the cheapest medicine to clean your Kidneys...follow it and see the result...

Years pass by and our kidneys are filtering the blood by removing salt, poison and any unwanted entering our body. With time, the salt accumulates and this needs to undergo cleaning treatments and how are we going to overcome this?

It is very easy, first take a bunch of parsley (MALLI Leaves) KOTHIMBIR
(DHANIYA) and wash it clean. Then chop it in small pieces and put it in a pot, pour clean water and boil it for ten minutes. Let it cool down, filter it and pour in a
clean bottle and refrigerate to cool.

Drink one glass daily and you will notice all salt and other accumulated
poison coming out of your kidney by urination also you will be able to notice
the difference which you never felt before.

Parsley is known as best cleaning treatment for kidneys and it is natural!

Hope you will forward this to all your loved ones"

From wikipedia: Health effects and medicinal uses of Coriander

Like many spices, coriander contains antioxidants, which can delay or prevent the spoilage of food seasoned with this spice. A study found both the leaves and seed to contain antioxidants, but the leaves were found to have a stronger effect [17]

Chemicals derived from coriander leaves were found to have antibacterial activity against Salmonella choleraesuis, and this activity was found to be caused in part
by these chemicals acting as nonionic surfactants.[18]

Coriander has been used as a folk medicine for the relief of anxiety and insomnia in Iran. Experiments in mice support its use as an anxiolytic.[19] Coriander seeds are used in traditional Indian medicine as a diuretic by boiling equal amounts of coriander seeds and cumin seeds, then cooling and consuming the resulting liquid.[20] In holistic and traditional medicine, it is used as a carminative and as a digestive aid.[21][22]

Coriander has been documented as a traditional treatment for diabetes. A study on mice found coriander extract had both insulin-releasing and insulin-like activity.[23]

Coriander seeds were found in a study on rats to have a significant hypolipidemic effect, resulting in lowering of levels of total cholesterol and triglycerides, and increasing levels of high-density lipoprotein. This effect appeared to be caused by increasing synthesis of bile by the liver and increasing the breakdown of
cholesterol into other compounds.[24]

Vitamin D May Help Preserve Eyesight in Elderly and Protect Other Degenerative Ailments

Vitamin D 'Can Help Preserve Eyesight in Elderly'.....Anonymous

Note that Vitamin D is under serious investigation and we still don't know the full range of benefits we can derive from regular dose of VitD supplement. This article was quoted without reference to the original reseach by Dr. Jeffrey in Life Extension. Hence, I am not citing the URL. What this article suggests makes sense. [Curator]

Western Mail 02-15-12

VITAMIN D supplements may have wide-ranging anti-ageing properties including the preservation of eyesight, research suggests.

Middle-aged mice treated with the vitamin for six weeks underwent changes in their eyes that led to improved vision.

Levels of amyloid beta, a toxic protein linked to Alzheimer's disease and known to be a hallmark of ageing, were also reduced in the animals' eyes and blood vessels.

Although the research is still at an early stage, scientist believe it could have important implications for human health.

Boosting vitamin D intake may have broad anti-ageing effects and in particular help prevent loss of vision and blindness in older people, it is claimed.

Lead scientist Professor Glen Jeffery, from the Institute of Ophthalmology at University College London (UCL), said: "Finding that amyloid deposits were reduced in the blood vessels of mice that had been given vitamin D supplements suggests that vitamin D could be useful in helping to prevent a range of age-related health problems, from deteriorating vision to heart disease."

The research findings were published yesterday in the journal Neurobiology of Aging. The UCL team injected one-year-old female mice with safflower oil containing 0.9 micrograms of vitamin D every three days. A mouse year is roughly equivalent to 50 human years. Another group received injections of vitamin-free safflower oil.

After six weeks, tests which measured the electrical responses of retinal cells showed significant improvement in the vision of the treated mice.

Previous research in the US had found "mounting evidence" that lack of vitamin D was associated with a range of disorders including diabetes, arthritis, heart disease and some cancers.

Evolutionary history may explain the link between vitamin D deficiency and age-related diseases, said Prof Jeffery.

Most human evolution took place in Africa where the ancestors of modern humans were exposed to strong sunlight. They would not have been short of vitamin D, which is generated by the action of the sun's ultraviolet rays on the skin.

Prof Jeffery said: "Supplementing vitamin D could save us a lot of money and improve public health."

Formaldehyde in Vaccines: Does injected form induce changes in DNA and stimulate cancer cells to grow? | LOCAL HEALTH TRADITIONS | Scoop.it
Formaldehyde in vaccines is injected into your child. Before you consider another vaccine for your child, consider this important information...

Granted, there was much detail given to inhalation of formaldehyde gas with some studies documenting the effects of adding formaldehyde to the animals drinking water. However, there were no studies performed on injecting formaldehyde into the animals, as often occurs when vaccines containing formaldehyde are injected into infants, toddlers, teens, adults, and senior citizens.

Question: Why no injection studies on formaldehyde? Since formaldehyde or Formalin are excipients used in the manufacture of the following vaccines...
