US farmers may stop planting GMs after poor global yields

US farmers may stop planting GMs after poor global yields | LOCAL HEALTH TRADITIONS | Scoop.it

Some US farmers are considering returning to conventional seed after increased pest resistance and crop failures meant GM crops saw smaller yields globally than their non-GM counterparts.

Farmers in the USA pay about an extra $100 per acre for GM seed, and many are questioning whether they will continue to see benefits from using GMs.

"It's all about cost benefit analysis," said economist Dan Basse, president of American agricultural research company AgResource.

Arun Shrivastava's insight:

The problem now is how to restore the farmlands to uncontaminated state. There is one possibility that my friends have tried here in Uttarakhand [a Himalayan State] and I am going to introduce this technique in Himachal Pradesh to our 24 partner villages [Up from 3 last year]. It is low cost and the results show up within a few months. It is essentially based on helping soil to boost the billions of life forms in the soil. It is my guess that if soils are kept free of fertilizers and pesticides and simultanoeusly helped with remineralization combined with organic methods of boosting soil organic matter, it helps regain fertility. It may not eliminate contamination but it may restore fertility. If our experiments succeed, we shall indtroduce this in cotton growing areas where farmers' suicides are concentrated.

Sepp Hasslberger's curator insight, February 15, 2013 11:51 PM

This is going to be the end of GMOs, rather than public protest about the dangers of eating GMO based foods. It shows us that it is money that makes the world go 'round. GMO was a bad bet by Monsanto and other agrochemical giants.

Arun Shrivastava's curator insight, February 16, 2013 3:05 AM

Please note that GM foods not only affect our health but destroy soil health. This has been known for some years. The root hairs of a plant are the most predatory living system, expanding to 16 miles every day every day to obtain vital nutrients from the soil. These root hairs interact with soil living organisms [the billions of bacteira and micro, meso and macro organisms. This interaction can transfer altered gene because horizontal [cross specie] contamination is a well established fact.

Dr Huber, an Ag-scientist, found that the genetic structure of GM seeds prevents uptake of magnesium which can cause serious health problems in animals and humans.

I hope that a solution to restoring soil health is found soon.

Cows chomping on fresh grass and red clover silage produce omega milk | LOCAL HEALTH TRADITIONS | Scoop.it

However, milk products are a significant source of saturated fatty acids in the Western diet. How should dairy cattle be fed for their milk to contain more unsaturated ...
Arun Shrivastava's insight:

QUALITY OF MILK DEPENDS UPON WHAT THEY CHOMP

Cows grazing on fresh grass red clover produce omega milk. That's not the only thing they chomp. A good grassland/pasture also grows many medicinal plants [some call them weeds] and these add to the natural nutritive content of milk. It is for this reason that China and India had a tradition of maintaining pastures near every village as common pool resources. Unfortunately this has given way to stall feeding which is expensive and also adversely affects nutrition in milk and general animal health.

Arun Shrivastava's insight:

MARIJUANA FOR THE ELDERLY

It heals. I have no doubt in my mind that this the God's own plant sent to earth to heal. On this very blog, I had posted a story of a 125  year old lady from Odisha who credited regular marijuana smoking to her longevity. That story is circulating:

http://beforeitsnews.com/health/2011/08/125-year-old-pot-smoker-claims-weed-was-her-secret-to-longevity-957324.html

I have received a few emails in the past telling me that I am promoting drugs. I am not. Never ever smoked pot or used hard drugs even when these things were common in college campus. I have done my research thoroughly. Hence I have no fear in recommending that cannabis heals. Cannabis can be administered in many ways.

As milk, it's most nutritious. As food, sweets, bakery products. In India, it's a common food just as opium poppy seeds. As an intoxicant, it does get you high but it also heals unlike cigarette.

AN IMPORTANT COMMENT FROM A FRIEND:

RemoveSilvija Bezprezimena You don't have to smoke it. Make oil out of it. It is very simple - cut fresh cannabis bud and put them in a glass jar, add your favorite quality cooking oil, put in sun for several weeks, strain greens out and use the oil as food. Or make a tincture - fill a glass jar with cannabis and pour 100 proof vodka over it or grain alcohol (vodka is most suitable in extracting the active ingredients of all common alcohol types, also grain alcohol) Pour vodka over the jar full of cannabis buds, close jar, shake once a day, let sit for 4-6 weeks. Use the vodka tincture sparingly, as needed. Or even simpler: make a very hot tea and drop a cannabis bud in there. The heat of the tea will activate the THC. Drink tea, eat the green bud in the tea. You don't have to smoke it - try one of the above. Tea is the simplest way and requires no preparation.

This should be part of our furniture. The video demonstration of how air ionizer cleans air is shown in a simple and [I think] very effective way. Jethwani [a Delhi resident] lights up four incense sticks, places them by the ionizer and covers both with a jar. He then switches on the generator and one can see how smoke is cleared away within minutes. An important parameter when selecting an ionizer is its Clean Air Delivery Rate [CADR]. Many manufacturers make dubious claims.

HEALTH BENEFITS

There are many authoritative articles on health benefits of ionized air. A short review is given here:

http://nutritionreview.org/2013/04/positive-health-benefits-negative-ions/

Since our city air is polluted and certain pollutants do cause DNA damage, it is advised that homes install ionizer. Particularly the bed room should be ionized before going to sleep. Excellent preventive solution for infants and growing children in the cities.

PRICE

A good equipment costs about Rs 5000 [roughly 100 dollars], the best models cost close to Rs 10,000.

Indian Herbs and Herbal Drugs Used for the Treatment of Diabetes

Indian Herbs and Herbal Drugs Used for the Treatment of Diabetes | LOCAL HEALTH TRADITIONS | Scoop.it
Arun Shrivastava's insight:

A REASONABLY GOOD STUDY

The study lists 17 commonly found herbs that are used in the treatment of diabetes. It has been known for some time, perhaps three decades, that diabetes, CVD, cancers and other degenerative diseases are induced by oxidative damage. Hence, anti-oxidants became a rage. However, most of the anti-oxidants can be derived from raw food.

And diabetes can be cured by raw food diet. There are some claims of one month cure [NOT SURE]. The question is: why raw food is healthiest? My personal experience is that ever since hydrogenated/processed oils were introduced, with plenty of false promises of D2 and then "cholesterol reducing properties", the issue became complicated and misled the masses.

Raw food, or steamed food, therefore, is best. Cooked food in any oil is bad for the diabetic. Any oil oxidises when exposed to heat. Reuse of once heated oil, as is normal in many households, is a KILLER.

A powerful combination of raw food, D3 [Cholecalciferol], Lipospheric Vitamin C, CoQ10, and Glutathione, AND 3 TO 4 LITRES OF CLEAN WATER PER DAY [NOT BOTTLED WATER], alkalizing blood pH level [baking soda], EARTHING, breathing ionized air, IBT [Inclined Bed Therapy] should cure most degenerative diseases without depending upon the corporate system of draining your wealth and health.

Ubiquinol-induced gene expression signatures are translated into altered parameters of erythropoiesis and reduced low density lipoprotein cholesterol levels in humans.

Schmelzer C1, Niklowitz P, Okun JG, Haas D, Menke T, Döring F.

Author information 1Department of Molecular Prevention, Institute of Human Nutrition and Food Science, Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel, Heinrich-Hecht-Platz 10, Kiel, Germany. sek@molprev.uni-kiel.deAbstract

Studies in vitro and in mice indicate a role for Coenzyme Q(10) (CoQ(10) ) in gene expression. To determine this function in relationship to physiological readouts, a 2-week supplementation study with the reduced form of CoQ(10) (ubiquinol, Q(10) H(2) , 150 mg/d) was performed in 53 healthy males. Mean CoQ(10) plasma levels increased 4.8-fold after supplementation. Transcriptomic and bioinformatic approaches identified a gene-gene interaction network in CD14-positive monocytes, which functions in inflammation, cell differentiation, and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-signaling. These Q(10) H(2) -induced gene expression signatures were also described previously in liver tissues of SAMP1 mice. Biochemical and NMR-based analyses showed a reduction of low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol plasma levels after Q(10) H(2) supplementation. This effect was especially pronounced in atherogenic small dense LDL particles (19-21 nm, 1.045 g/L). In agreement with gene expression signatures, Q(10) H(2) reduces the number of erythrocytes but increases the concentration of reticulocytes.

In conclusion, Q(10) H(2) induces characteristic gene expression patterns, which are translated into reduced LDL cholesterol levels and altered parameters of erythropoiesis in humans.

1Department of Geriatric Cardiology, General Hospital of Chinese People's Liberation Army, Beijing 100853, China.

AbstractOBJECTIVE:

The purpose of this study was to quantify the effect of coenzyme Q10 on arterial endothelial function in patients with and without established cardiovascular disease.

BACKGROUND:

Endothelial dysfunction has been implicated in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis.

METHODS AND RESULTS:

The search included MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, Scopus, and EMBASE to identify studies up to 1 July 2011. Eligible studies were randomized controlled trials on the effects of coenzyme Q10 compared with placebo on endothelial function. Two reviewers extracted data on study characteristics, methods, and outcomes. Five eligible trials enrolled a total of 194 patients. Meta-analysis using random-effects model showed treatment with coenzyme Q10 significantly improvement in endothelial function assessed peripherally by flow-mediated dilatation (SMD 1.70, 95% CI: 1.00-2.4, p<0.0001). However, the endothelial function assessed peripherally by nitrate-mediated arterial dilatation was not significantly improved by using fix-effects model (SMD -0.19, 95% CI: -1.75 to 1.38, p = 0.81).

CONCLUSION:

Coenzyme Q10 supplementation is associated with significant improvement in endothelial function. The current study supports a role for CoQ10 supplementation in patients with endothelial dysfunction.

 Abstract

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ) is a powerful antioxidant that reduces oxidative stress. We explored whether the quality of dietary fat alters postprandial oxidative DNA damage and whether supplementation with CoQ improves antioxidant capacity by modifying the activation/stabilization of p53 in elderly subjects. In this crossover study, 20 subjects were randomly assigned to receive three isocaloric diets during 4 weeks each: (1) Mediterranean diet (Med diet), (2) Mediterranean diet supplemented with CoQ (Med+CoQ diet), and (3) saturated fatty acid-rich diet (SFA diet). Levels of mRNAs were determined for p53, p21, p53R2, and mdm2. Protein levels of p53, phosphorylated p53 (Ser20), and monoubiquitinated p53 were also measured, both in cytoplasm and nucleus. The extent of DNA damage was measured as plasma 8-OHdG. SFA diet displayed higher postprandial 8-OHdG concentrations, p53 mRNA and monoubiquitinated p53, and lower postprandial Mdm2 mRNA levels compared with Med and Med+CoQ diets (p < 0.05). Moreover, Med+CoQ diet induced a postprandial decrease of cytoplasmatic p53, nuclear p-p53 (Ser20), and nuclear and cytoplasmatic monoubiquitinated p53 protein (p < 0.05). In conclusion, Med+CoQ diet improves oxidative DNA damage in elderly subjects and reduces processes of cellular oxidation. Our results suggest a starting point for the prevention of oxidative processes associated with aging.

Plant Breeders Release First 'Open Source Seeds'

Plant Breeders Release First 'Open Source Seeds' | LOCAL HEALTH TRADITIONS | Scoop.it

A group of scientists and food activists is launching a campaign Thursday to change the rules that govern seeds.

They're releasing 29 new varieties of crops under a new "open source pledge" that's intended to safeguard the ability of farmers, gardeners and plant breeders to share those seeds freely.

It's inspired by the example of open source software, which is freely available for anyone to use but cannot legally be converted into anyone's proprietary product.

These days, seeds are intellectual property. Some are patented as inventions. You need permission from the patent holder to use them, and you're not supposed to harvest seeds for replanting the next year.

Even university breeders operate under these rules.

The Five-firm Concentration Ratio [denominated as C5] in 2005 was over 50% globally and it was apparent that there is collusion. In fact, a case was filed under Monopolies and Restrictive Trade Practices Act [MRTPA] in Delhi but Monsanto 'managed' the case.

However, in India over 50% of seeds are still farmer saved or developed by small firms. Unless the Government steps in, even India will lose its seed sovereignty.
