The Cattle Growth Drug That’s Making Beef More Like Chicken

Bill Palladino - MLUI's insight:

Data and common economic sense suggest that proteins such as beef are the next huge opportunity for local food systems to tackle.  This means small farms producing more, but more importantly building the infrastructure and regulatory foot work to provide a true value chain.  The runaway nature of large-scale agriculture is scary, but should provide even more incentive for communities to act... on their own behalf.

Harvesting Justice: Transforming the Global Food Supply Chain -- Food Sovereignty | Local Food Systems | Scoop.it
From community gardens to just global policy, a national and global movement is growing to reclaim food, land, and agricultural systems from agribusiness and put them back in the hands of citizens.
Bill Palladino - MLUI's insight:

Food has been the basis for wars, competition, and revolt for centuries. "Over a half-century ago, Mahatma Gandhi led a multitude of Indians to the sea to make salt in defiance of the British Empire's monopoly on this resource critical to people's diet. The action catalyzed the fragmented movement for Indian independence and was the beginning of the end for Britain's rule over India."

I love Persian markets. Travelling in the middle-east over the years, finding food and spice markets was a favorite pastime. Thankfully the USDA let me cross the border back into the US with the spices at least. Finding such markets in the States is a challenge. Detroit's Eastern Market is one of the best.  Where else are there Persian markets we should know about?
