Flies, Maggots, Rats, and Lots of Poop: What Big Ag Doesn't Want You To See

Flies, Maggots, Rats, and Lots of Poop: What Big Ag Doesn't Want You To See | Local Food Systems | Scoop.it
They're back: "ag-ag" laws that would make it illegal to make an undercover film inside livestock operations.
Bill Palladino - MLUI's insight:

One of my big pet peeves is how the implications of Big Ag style farming always seem to affect small farms most.  Food safety issues, especially the regulations coming from the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) are almost entirely based on safety issues that have arisen from large scale farms.  Yet small farms must comply as well, often at considerable cost.

Desperate to Foment New Regulations & Lawsuits, Activists Ratchet Up "Food ...
Bill Palladino - MLUI's insight:

I'm not one for conpiracy theories, but I do think this language must go both ways.  While I don't mind occassionally being called an activist, I do resent the perjorative nature of its use. We are called "activists" by such press because we're asking for change.  But aren't big food and pharmaceutical companies the real activists here?

Why Labeling Makes Sense |

Why Labeling Makes Sense | | Local Food Systems | Scoop.it

What are GE crops?  Haven’t we been genetically engineering crops since the first seed breeders thousands of years ago?

GE plants or animals have had their genetic makeup altered to exhibit traits that are not naturally theirs.

Bill Palladino - MLUI's insight:

A week ago Whole Foods made global news when it announced it would soon stop sales of any item containing GMO food components.  Here's a nice post and video describing why labeling GMO products makes great sense.

The Anyone Can Farm Academy Teaches the Power of Food

The Anyone Can Farm Academy Teaches the Power of Food | Local Food Systems | Scoop.it
Mark Baker's Anyone Can Farm Academy brings the power of food back to the people by teaching everything from basic poultry breeds to rotational grazing.
Bill Palladino - MLUI's insight:

Mark Baker is doing the difficult work of forging new mindsets about small scale agriculture, all the while fighting real battles.  His battles are both the legal and ethical kind, and he and his family do this work while struggling to make their small farm work. I applaud Mark and Jill for their brave vigilance. This program is another example of their willingness to go against the grain when the thought of it is fearful, or at least threatening, to others.

Scrubbing Up: Do hospitals legitimise junk food?

Scrubbing Up: Do hospitals legitimise junk food? | Local Food Systems | Scoop.it
A cardiologist argues hospitals legitimise junk food and suggest they must lead by example. (Is it right for hospitals to serve junk food on site? Could it be legitimising these addictions to patients?
Bill Palladino - MLUI's insight:

I know this is an issue in many hospitals across the country. Let's face it, feeding people can be expensive especially in an institutional setting where you may not be paid for the food you're serving.  I recently had an especially good experience at Munson Hospital here in northern Michigan. I was able to order food from a menu in my room, anytime I felt the urge.  The food itself was pretty darn good too.  If I chose something that was too fatty, or wasn't representing a good balance, I'd literally get a call from a nutrionist!  So hats off to you Munson, and other hospitals that take nutrition, food education, and patient care seriously.

When it comes to protecting the environment and issues like worker well-being and women's rights, 10 of the world's biggest food producers get failing grades from Oxfam, an activist group for the poor.
Bill Palladino - MLUI's insight:

Ouch. If you happen to be a big food company, I wouldn't bring this report card home to mom.  You'd be banished to the library and have your sleepover privleges revoked. Oxfam beats up these companies up for issues like women's rights, conserving water, etc. Good on ya, OXFAM!

Meet the girl entrepreneurs revolutionising Kenyan farming

Meet the girl entrepreneurs revolutionising Kenyan farming | Local Food Systems | Scoop.it
Yohannes Wolday from the Nike Foundation says the Value Girls programme has transformed the way girls live and work in western Kenya
Bill Palladino - MLUI's insight:

And from Kenya, a look at how a turn towards farming is helping young Kenyan women keep away from the only other available method of making money in this impoverished country. The sex trade is a force in this part of Africa.  Learning some basic farming methods, along with a bit of business sense, is allowing these women to create their own path, while truly serving the food systems needs there. Quite a difference from the reasons we in the U.S. are drawn to farming.
