Is organic maple syrup a step in the right direction?

bltintc's comment, February 10, 2012 2:55 PM
Hmmm. The author expresses his own skepticism that organic maple syrup has any value over regular syrup, then talks to some food experts who claim organics won't feed the world, although they don't have time to back it up (and btw are we feeding the world now?). Then he talks to a regular syrup producer in VT who says his syrup is virtually the same as organic. Because I know and like organics, I was watching for any real info here, but it was just opinion and speculation!
Generally, organic syrup comes from producers whose entire operation is organic--their sugarbush plus whatever else they farm. That's a nice thing to support if you like it, and it's good, clean maple syrup. But even if you don't buy organic syrup, please don't buy this guy's opinion that organic production causes more harm than good!
Bill Palladino - MLUI's comment, February 10, 2012 3:30 PM
Thanks for the comment. Dealing at all with the powers that be over food regulation / certification can be major frustration. I work with a lot of farmers, many of them with organic operations. I guess the point is that we can't look at Organic maple syrup as a practical "value add" because the price differential that the market will support is nill. Maple syrup is an incredibly labor intensive and weather dependent food product. The price we see on shelves seems steep but can barely pay for the investment. I buy a lot of organic foods. I'm not sure however that I'd reach for organic maple syrup. I prioritize the idea of knowing who grows my food, and knowing the land it's grown on, over trusting a label. And like the article in question... that's just one guy's opinion. Thanks again.
