From Microfinance to Metafinance: A New Tool to Fight Global Poverty

The microfinance revolution created new ways for the world's poor to secure loans. But microfinance institutions normally don't have the capacity or authority to finance community-level infrastructure projects.

This is my collection of news, articles, interviews, videos, and other ideas that we've found related to Local Economy. It's a wide swath cut into the topic as we cover everything from permaculture, small farms, gardening, energy, politics, transportation, infrastructure, and other elements that make up a community and how it works economically.

We put these here in one place after weeding through the chaff. We provide what's interesting and pertinent while excluding purely promotional materials. You should feel confident when you click on one of these links that it won't lead you through some spammy, scammy, adventure before you get to the heart of the matter.

I thank you for tuning in and suggest that you subscribe to the topic so you'll get daily updates from us. Also, feel free to suggest content for inclusion.

Many thanks,

Chicago Council: Business and Innovation in Agriculture | Nourishing the Planet

The Chicago Council on Global Affairs’ annual symposium, Advancing Food and Nutrition Security at the 2012 G8 Summit, was underway today. Follow the discussion on Twitter with @globalagdev #globalag

The symposium’s afternoon sessions more specifically addressed the roles that business and innovation will be required to play in agricultural development. “[It is] the end of the era of the handout,” said Josette Sheeran, former head of the UN WFP and current Vice-Chairman of the World Economic Forum. “But the era of hand up is also dated and we’re in the era of the handshake.”

Group tracks airborne fungicide

FRAZEE, MINN..  Don and Norma Smith couldn't understand why their sheep stopped producing lambs in the mid-1990s. When half the animals died mysteriously over one winter, they gave up on the profitable hobby that had won blue ribbons for their kids at the Minnesota State Fair.
It was only later that they figured the problem might be connected to chemicals used on the potato fields that had grown up around their small farm here on the sandy soil in west-central Minnesota.

What can we do about urban food waste?: Observatory: Design Observer

Urban farming is a cool design topic these days – but if we’re to make a serious impact on the global food system, we need to show meaningful solidarity with its victims in distant places, too.

Chinese Designed Rooftop Velodrome

Maybe it's time for our own local velodrome.  Atop the next parking deck? Hmm..  Bicyclists to this pavilion in china may access a rooftop cycling arena which appears to float above the glass-enclosed ground level.

State waits for Legislature to do its job on transit | Bridge Michigan

By Timothy R. Fischer/Michigan Environmental Council and Michele Hodges/Troy Chamber of Commerce

Our state’s leaders must stop dithering and approve the regional transit authority bills (Senate Bills 909, 911-912) before the Michigan Legislature. An RTA matters for the entire state.

It would control transit tax expenditures in Southeast Michigan, cut duplicative service, force efficiencies and offer a higher level of transit service. It does not raise taxes one cent.

Does Eating Corn Syrup Kill Your Memory?

If a new study using lab rats is any indication, the answer could be yes. If you've ever experienced a cupcake coma (you know, the period of extreme lethargy that follows a sugar high brought on by consumption of one or more cupcakes), you might not be surprised by some recent findings on the effects of processed sweeteners.

John Waters Picked Up Hitchhiking

We don't advocate picking up hitchhikers (they might have hooks or axes or really bad breath), but this story about a rock band picking up a happy (and famous) traveler is too cool to ignorxcept from Yahoo News - this is SO great!

Michigan’s War on Cities: How the State Is Putting the Screws To a City Near You | Found Michigan

Another fine piece from our friends in Ypsilanti, Lou and Emily.  Unless you’ve been hiding out in the backwoods of the U.P. for the last two years, chances are you’ve heard a little something about how the State of Michigan hasn’t been playing nice with Michigan cities. By far, the measure that has received the most attention is the new emergency manager law passed in March 2011—which allows the State to take over financially distressed cities, dismissing their democratically elected local governments.
