State of Higher Ed LMS Market for US and Canada: Spring 2016 Edition - | LMSs and the Future of Online Learning | Scoop.it
This is the eighth year I have shared the LMS market share graphic, commonly known as the squid graphic, for (mostly) US higher education. The original idea remains – to give a picture of the LMS market in one page, highlighting the story of the market over time. The key to the graphic is that the width of each band represents the percentage of institutions using a particular LMS as its primary system.

Why Is Blackboard Laying Off Staff Despite Improved Market Share Position? - | LMSs and the Future of Online Learning | Scoop.it
Over the past two weeks Blackboard had another round of layoffs, likely due to the company missing financial targets. While one estimate places the number at roughly 200, from what I have heard the number is closer to 90 – 100 people let go. I asked the company for commentary on the layoffs and associated reorganization.

Blackboard’s Complexity Problems | edutechnica

Reactions to this year’s BbWorld are starting to roll in, and I’d like to add something to Michael’s recent post on Blackboard’s Messaging Problems. Yes, Blackboard could be better at communicating (can’t we all?), but I believe that Blackboard’s more challenging problems are rooted in the complexity of its software rather than the perplexity of its marketing messages.

Google Classroom Addresses Major Barrier To Deeper Higher Ed Adoption -

Google Classroom Addresses Major Barrier To Deeper Higher Ed Adoption - | LMSs and the Future of Online Learning | Scoop.it
By Phil HillMore Posts (332) A year ago I wrote about Google Classroom, speculating whether it would affect the institutional LMS market in higher education.

Well today Google announced a new Google Classroom API that directly addresses the limitation in bullet #1 above and indirectly addresses #4.

The Classroom API allows admins to provision and manage classes at scale, and lets developers integrate their applications with Classroom. Until the end of July, we’ll be running a developer preview, during which interested admins and developers can sign up for early access. When the preview ends, all Apps for Education domains will be able to use the API, unless the admin has restricted access.

By using the API, admins will be able to provision and populate classes on behalf of their teachers, set up tools to sync their Student Information Systems with Classroom, and get basic visibility into which classes are being taught in their domain. The Classroom API also allows other apps to integrate with Classroom.
