Five models for making sense of Complex Systems

Five models for making sense of Complex Systems | Дистанционная Школа | Scoop.it

First, let me say I’m a big fan of this model of models by Scott Berinato, author of Good Charts. The five models we are about to explore are exploratory/conceptual or exploratory/declarative models (or maps or diagrams.) That means they are based in IDEAS not DATA.

These five are particularly useful for understanding complex systems. This seems more important every day, as we are all complexifying things full time.

The first two diagrams are exploratory, i.e. for ordering your thinking. You can do this alone, or with your team.

Using infographic creation tools in the classroom

Using infographic creation tools in the classroom | Дистанционная Школа | Scoop.it

The next time you need to evaluate what students have learned about a subject, ask them to create an infographic. When students take the information they have learned and compile it into a visual format, it demonstrates mastery of the content. Infographics stimulate visual learning. Encouraging students to create and share their infographics in the classroom takes their learning to the next level. Teachers need to provide students with infographic creation tools that provide students with a way to create infographics easily, to allow them to focus on the content rather than mastering a new technology.

When evaluating infographic tools teachers should look for tools that are easy to use but are also rich with functionality. These tools should also make it easy to print and share the infographics that students create. Infographic tools that allow students to compile their data into visually interesting charts and graphs are also a plus. Here are a few tools that we have evaluated that offer these important features.

When we encourage students to create graphic organizers we are .taking into accout the different learning styles they have. In this case, they can explore and organize their ideas in an appealing way. Furthermore, creating infographics is excellent for understanding content because by using them, students can extract the main ideas from diverse topics.
Definitely, I will incorporate tools like this, for giving freedom to students' imagination and creativity.

How to transform schools into Learning Organisations?

How to transform schools into Learning Organisations? | Дистанционная Школа | Scoop.it

Schools nowadays are required to learn faster than ever before in order to deal effectively with the growing pressures of a rapidly changing environment. Many schools however, look much the same today as they did a generation ago, and too many teachers are not developing the pedagogies and practices required to meet the diverse needs of 21st-century learners.

In response, a growing body of scholars, educators and policy makers around the world is making the case that schools should be re-conceptualised as “learning organisations” that can react more quickly to changing external environments, embrace innovations in internal organisation, and ultimately improve student outcomes. Despite strong support for and the intuitive appeal of the school as a learning organisation, relatively little progress has been made in advancing the concept, either in research or practice. This lack of progress partly stems from a lack of clarity or common understanding of the school as learning organisation.

Aunque las recomendaciones se basen en un estudio desarrollado  por la OECD (2016) para escuelas, estas mismas pueden aplicarse también para Instituciones de educación superior como las Universidades.

Ivon Prefontaine's curator insight, February 14, 7:15 PM
Schools, in and of themselves, are not learning organizations. It is the people within schools who are the organization and communal aspects. Peter Senge proposed schools as learning organizations two decades ago. I discovered the culture of school is one of isolation that people readily accepted. The key would be to bring people together on a regular basis and in a gradual way. We have too many managers and not enough leaders in schools.

If we’re not irrelevant, what are we?

If we’re not irrelevant, what are we? | Дистанционная Школа | Scoop.it

We are preparing instructional leaders for P-12 schools but I rarely see or hear us talking about how to help preservice or practicing administrators understand how to (re)design school structures, curricula, units, lessons, and instructional activities to move in the directions noted above. [indeed, I have some doubts that most of us faculty would even know how] Even though social justice is a deeply held belief for most of us, we rarely discuss the intersections of that concept with changing workforce readiness needs or how the inequities of students’ digital access are extended and exacerbated when it comes to students’ digital usage. I don’t see most educational leadership faculty having broad and rich conversations about how technology has and will transform almost everything, what ‘college and career readiness’ or ‘personalized learning’ even mean these days, or what our roles are as faculty, parents, community members, and citizens to deal with all of this.

Emotional Intelligence Has 12 Elements. Which Do You Need to Work On?

Emotional Intelligence Has 12 Elements. Which Do You Need to Work On? | Дистанционная Школа | Scoop.it

There are many models of emotional intelligence, each with its own set of abilities; they are often lumped together as “EQ” in the popular vernacular. We prefer “EI,” which we define as comprising four domains: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management. Nested within each domain are twelve EI competencies, learned and learnable capabilities that allow outstanding performance at work or as a leader.

These include areas in which Esther is clearly strong: empathy, positive outlook, and self-control. But they also include crucial abilities such as achievement, influence, conflict management, teamwork and inspirational leadership. These skills require just as much engagement with emotions as the first set, and should be just as much a part of any aspiring leader’s development priorities....
