Teenagers estimate Australian teenage smoking rates 2013

In 2013 we asked some year 8 students at a Central Coast high school to estimate what percentage of Australian teenagers they believe smoke. The students gro...
Elizabeth Martin's insight:

I think this video is very cleaver because they use teenagers to get the message across that only 6.6% of Australian teenagers smoke - and that's really not a lot. We always hear about the bad "high" rates of teenage smoking in Australia - however that is clearly a myth to get teenagers to get the message on how negative smoking is. However, it seems that teenagers have already received that message. It is recent information because it was made in 2013 by what i think is somewhat of a reliable source.

Hazards of secondhand marijuana smoke - CBS News

Hazards of secondhand marijuana smoke - CBS News | Liz's Yr 9 Journal | Scoop.it
Study suggests even brief exposure to pot smoke can have an impact on the heart
Elizabeth Martin's insight:

This article has a good message which can be beneficial to all, especially teenagers. It can teach one the importance of being aware while you are at a party, function, concert or outdoor event. We can learn that even just a whiff of pot which floats past you can have a major effect on your body. The article states that "A whiff of pot that drifts your way at a rock concert or outdoor event could damage your heart and blood vessels as much as secondhand cigarette smoke does, preliminary research suggests." This really puts its into perspective. Teenagers should be aware that the best thing to do if someone is smoking pot is to leave, because it can still have a major impact on our bodies even if we don;t directly smoke it.

Are post-birth abortions ok?

"You're asking me whether I blanketly believe it's wrong to kill a newborn baby after that baby's been taken from it's mother's womb. And I'm saying to you I...
Elizabeth Martin's insight:

This video is pretty poorly done however it does make for a good discussion. I personally do believe that a women's health is a women's choice, however i also disagree with post-birth abortions. I think that after the first 2/3 months of pregnancy it is wrong to get an abortion. I believe it is wrong to put off making the decision an put the baby through the pain all just because you couldn't make up your mind. I also strongly agree with her first statement that it is wrong to get an abortion if you just recklessly went out and had sex knowing that if you did fall pregnant then you would just kill the baby, that is so wrong, morally and ethically.

I think it is important for teenagers, especially girls, to view this clip because it raises some important ethical questions which all people should address at some stage of their life. Abortion has always been such a debatable issue and i personally believe that all people should make their own informed decision on the matter in order to make positive choices in their life.

I really like this you tube clip by drinking nightmare because it takes a different, but very strong approach on tackling binge drinking among teenagers. At first the add could be for anything but the further in you get you realise it objective is to outline what you would be missing if you turned your "night out into a nightmare" as advertised.

Women Condoms – Not sexy but pretty important - Mr Minds

Women Condoms – Not sexy but pretty important - Mr Minds | Liz's Yr 9 Journal | Scoop.it
Condoms aren’t sexy, and if there’s anything less sexy than a condom it’s women condoms, or the female condom.

Via mrminds
Elizabeth Martin's insight:

As the title states, its important to be aware of female condoms for protection. This article was different then what i expected, it did raise one very interesting point however. It stated that women in some countries where rape and abduction are common, females would wear female condoms as protection. I think this is a smart idea, however, rape and abduction aren't as common as it is in other countries. I think it is important for women to have independence and the peace of mind that may come with a female condom - despite it being very uncomfortable as the article states.

Another point it raises - which i believe all women should be aware of - is the fact that female condoms are difficult to find, they’re more expensive and they’re less effective than male condoms at preventing common STD transmission. But likely the most common reason women don’t wear condom is because it’s just not appeal aesthetically.

I believe it is important that women are aware of contraceptive methods and i believe that this article clearly states to pros and cons of one particular method, the female condom.

Melbourne man openly smoking ice on Australian suburban train - Daily Mail

Melbourne man openly smoking ice on Australian suburban train - Daily Mail | Liz's Yr 9 Journal | Scoop.it
The extent of the 'ice' epidemic plaguing Australia is in full view in a video posted on YouTube, which shows a man casually smoking the drug on a suburban train in Melbourne.
Elizabeth Martin's insight:

This article is important for all teenagers to read to raise awareness of the risks involved with smoking ice. There are consequences to both your body and social life - being fines because it is illegal in Australia. Being close to home, we are all faced with the issues of drugs at one stage of our life - so we can learn from this article about the importance of being well educated in this area to make responsible decisions. This man however, clearly has no respect for himself or others around him.

NSW Government bans smoking in national parks to reduce bushfire risk - The Daily Telegraph

NSW Government bans smoking in national parks to reduce bushfire risk - The Daily Telegraph | Liz's Yr 9 Journal | Scoop.it
LIGHTING up a cigarette in a national park in NSW is set to be outlawed as the State Government moves to stamp out a key cause of bushfires.
Elizabeth Martin's insight:

Personally, i agree with banning smoking in the National Parks for safety reasons and for preventing bush fires. Coming from a family of outdoor junkies, i want to preserve the National Parks. In recent times we have seen deadly fires destroy our beloved National Parks in NSW which took great toll on the wildlife. I am not saying that it was smokers fault, i am just saying that we should do everything to minimise the risk of another bush fire. I don't believe that smokers are being treated unfairly, but as the article states "The Royal Commission into the Victorian bush fires identified cigarette butts as one of the likely causes of bush fires in the Australian environment."

I think it is an important issue for teenagers to learn. The fine is $300, so we all can learn something. I think this article can also teach teenagers about the effects that smoking not only has on you and your body, but also on the environment.

Teachers deal with students' drug and alcohol abuse, report says

Teachers deal with students' drug and alcohol abuse, report says | Liz's Yr 9 Journal | Scoop.it
The binge drinking and drug taking culture among high school students is having a detrimental impact on schools, a survey of principals found, with teachers spending significant amounts of classroom time dealing with the fallout of weekend parties.
Elizabeth Martin's insight:

This is a good article because it addresses how binge drinking effects school life. The survey highlighted how weekend parties effect school life. Not only feeling drunken and sick students turn up in social issues. Whether students are judging them or friendships have been broken due to alcohol it now becomes the teachers job to deal with it.

I learned the hard way of binge drinking’s dangers

I learned the hard way of binge drinking’s dangers | Liz's Yr 9 Journal | Scoop.it
I HAVE a personal interest in helping to tackle Australia’s binge drinking culture and I’m keen to play my part in bringing about a shift in our attitude towards drinking to excess.
Elizabeth Martin's insight:

This article is advertising a new campaign aiming to tackle the effect of binge drinking. It is called "Be The Influence". Sports stars are speaking out about personal stories on binge drinking to allow kids to realise the dangers of underage drinking. It states how learning from an early age about the consequences of irresponsible drinking sets teenagers up for making the right decisions when it comes to binge drinking.

I particularly like this article because being a teenager who loves sport it is great to see role models speaking out about personal experiences in order for teenagers to realise the harm it does to their bodies and the way people view them.
