Antifragile: How to make an unstable world strong - opinion - 23 November 2012 - New Scientist

Antifragile: How to make an unstable world strong - opinion - 23 November 2012 - New Scientist | Living | Scoop.it

Can we exploit the fact that life is unpredictable, chaotic, full of shocks and disasters? Trader turned scholar Nassim Nicholas Taleb has a bold idea

In your new book you talk about things being "antifragile". What do you mean exactly?
When you ask people what is the opposite of fragile, they mostly answer something that is resilient or unbreakable - an unbreakable package would be robust. However, the opposite of fragile is something that actually gains from disorder. In the book, I classify things into fragile, robust or antifragile.

Can you give me some examples?
Nature builds things that are antifragile. In the case of evolution, nature uses disorder to grow stronger. Occasional starvation or going to the gym also makes you stronger, because you subject your body to stressors and gain from them. Another example is the restaurant industry. It benefits from the fact that individual restaurants are fragile by exploiting their mistakes as it tries to figure out why a particular restaurant went bust. Trial and error is an antifragile activity.

Identifying Influential and Susceptible Members of Social Networks

Identifying Influential and Susceptible Members of Social Networks | Living | Scoop.it

Identifying social influence in networks is critical to understanding how behaviors spread. We present a method for identifying influence and susceptibility in networks that avoids biases in traditional estimates of social contagion by leveraging in vivo randomized experimentation. Estimation in a representative sample of 1.3 million Facebook users showed that younger users are more susceptible than older users, men are more influential than women, women influence men more than they influence other women, and married individuals are the least susceptible to influence in the decision to adopt the product we studied. Analysis of influence and susceptibility together with network structure reveals that influential individuals are less susceptible to influence than non-influential individuals and that they cluster in the network, which suggests that influential people with influential friends help spread this product.
