The Family Stories That Bind Us — This Life

The Family Stories That Bind Us — This Life | Living Story | Scoop.it
Studies indicate that children learn resilience when they hear what their relatives before them have faced.
Alexis Niki's insight:

An interesting article on how family narratives can lead to happier, more secure children.

Favorite quote: “The most healthful narrative,” Dr. Duke continued, “is the third one. It’s called the oscillating family narrative: ‘Dear, let me tell you, we’ve had ups and downs in our family. We built a family business. Your grandfather was a pillar of the community. Your mother was on the board of the hospital. But we also had setbacks. You had an uncle who was once arrested. We had a house burn down. Your father lost a job. But no matter what happened, we always stuck together as a family.’ ”

Transmedia Coalition | The Transmedia Coalition has brought together a diverse group of wonderful contributors from around the world. They are professionals with a range of expertise who have been actively participating in the field of Transmedia.
Alexis Niki's insight:

Favorite Insight: "Building a foundation for a long running entertainment franchise requires techniques such as transmedia storytelling that expand narratives successfully across multiple media platforms, so that fans can dive deeper into the world in ways that feel authentic. It’s becoming clear that if the campaign is superficial, even ardent fans will flip to something else that will hold their interest — and there are a growing number of alternatives."

Love this story of a DIY approach to storytelling. And lo and behold it was heard and received by the Academy! Go indie media go!

Zan Chandler's curator insight, February 26, 2013 3:05 AM

And it actually won the Oscar!

While the amount of footage the filmmaker needed to make with his iPhone was small in terms of the overall, I think this sends a number of signals. 1 -  consumer tech is getting closer and closer to industry standards and used in the right way can be effective; and 2 - this is another example of compelling content created with a DIY ethic.

I look forward to seeing more examples of where filmmaking can evolve.

Jan van Gils's curator insight, March 9, 2013 3:10 PM

A very nice film and made with a little effort. Thats fine to me.

After Layoffs, Fourth Wall Studios Changes Course I Turnstyle | Living Story | Scoop.it

It was only a week ago that Fourth Wall Studios shocked the transmedia community by laying off a large chunk of their staff, a change that hit both company and community like a sudden loss of oxygen. Fourth Wall debuted their transmedia enhanced video platform RIDES back in March, and in the time since had earned an Emmy from the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.

Louise Robinson-Lay's curator insight, March 21, 2013 9:05 AM

teaching about film can be enhanced with the use of trailers. Analyzing the importance off them, the structure of them and the key features is a great way in to film study.

Delmai George's curator insight, March 21, 2013 7:48 AM

Creativity and design are inspired by all sorts of things.  In this case, a movie was used but games offer some great settings to explore. Students could take a structure from their favourite game and develop a prototype or they could debate if the structure would be suitable for the real world, what difficulties there might be in designing and building the structure or what sorts of needs/wants does the structure fulfil.
