Co-ops seeding co-ops - Cultivate.Coop

Co-ops seeding co-ops - Cultivate.Coop | Live different taste the difference | Scoop.it

"If a cooperative is the best business model for your business, why not share that benefit with others? Imagine an entire economy of principled enterprises that serve member needs and advance democratic participation.

Cooperatives can grow the cooperative economy in several ways. One way is by growing themselves: increasing their membership, sales, locations, services, products and jobs. And co-ops grow the co-op economy when they do business with each other. Investment in cooperative loan, grant and equity funds also boosts cooperative economies.

Another method is for co-op businesses to seed the development of new cooperatives. For an existing co-op, a new co-op business in the local economy means new peers and more people understanding and committed to co-op principles and values; it can also mean an improved bottom line and more member benefits.

Several co-op development strategies emerge from a review of what co-ops around the country are doing to expand the co-op economy. These correspond well to research by David Ellerman on “enterprise creation” that starts from existing businesses."

Co-ops are a great idea, but not often easy to make work in practice. This wiki contains valuable advice based on working case histories.

Awesome wiki style page about co-ops.  It is a model that is exploding out of the top down greed structures.

What India Taught Me About How to End Hunger

What India Taught Me About How to End Hunger | Live different taste the difference | Scoop.it
Back in the ’60s, Frances Moore Lappé realized that hunger is caused by a scarcity of democracy, not food. Then, a collective of courageous women farmers showed her how to change that.
Lia Goren's insight:

I first asked the most basic questions. What was it like 20 years ago?

"We were so poor that in the rainy season our hut floors would turn to mud and we had to pile up branches to sleep on. We were always hungry. We depended on government ration cards. Sometimes the big landowner would pay us for a job with some grains and that would be the only food for our children. We were so poor we had only one sari—not even a second one to change into when we bathe. My husband was a gambler, he was not ever here. I lived on sorghum and broken rice. Our life was dictated by bigger people. We had to suffer, even if they beat us. It was a dark time."

And what changed?

"We started meeting, talking. Every week now, at nine in the evening our sanghams [groups of women] come together and make decisions together. We tell each other our problems. If someone was abused, all of us go together to confront him. And now if there is a conflict in our village, they call on us. Through the sanghams, we've reclaimed the land. We don't use any chemicals. We grow as many as 25 crops on an acre or two."

And it’s not just about the number of hours in bed – it’s about the quality of sleep. “Sleep is something you can prepare for and be deliberate about,” Carter said, adding that people assume sleep comes naturally to kids. But for young ones, it’s especially important to establish a routine, not to eat carbohydrates before sleep, and to avoid bright screens before bed — the glow biologically resets circadian rhythms that respond to how much light enters the eye. For kids who have trouble falling asleep, parents should teach them relaxation techniques like taking deep breaths and listening to slow tempo music – that helps the neurons fall into their synchronized pattern quicker.

The Only Way to Get Important Things Done

The Only Way to Get Important Things Done | Live different taste the difference | Scoop.it

"The proper role for your pre-frontal cortex is to decide what behavior you want to change, design the ritual you'll undertake, and then get out of the way. "It is a profoundly erroneous truism that we should cultivate the habit of thinking of what we are doing," the philosopher A.N. Whitehead explained back in 1911. "The precise opposite is the case. Civilization advances by extending the number of operations we can perform without thinking about them.

Indeed many great performers aren't even consciously aware that's what they've done. They've built their rituals intuitively."

"It is a profoundly erroneous truism that we should cultivate the habit of thinking of what we are doing" -- this resonates with user experience design -- we talked tonight about the need for the interface to be transparent, in the background, so that it doesn't interfere with whatever you're trying to do.
