Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez Dies

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has died at the age of 58 after losing his long battle with cancer.

The country's vice president, Nicolas Maduro, announced the death in a national television broadcast.

He said Chavez died at 4.25 pm local time "after battling a tough illness for nearly two years".

The fiery populist leader's condition had been said to be deteriorating in recent days.

He had been undergoing cancer treatment in Cuba on and off since June 2011 - when he was first diagnosed with the illness.

The announcement came just hours after Mr Maduro announced the government had expelled two US diplomats from the country.

He said "we have no doubt" that Chavez's illness was induced by foul play by "the historical enemies of our homeland".

The government announced late Monday that Chavez's condition was "very delicate" due to a "new, severe" respiratory infection.

Chevez had not been seen in public or heard since undergoing a fourth round of surgery in Cuba on December 11 in the pelvic area

The government said he returned home on February 18, and had been confined to Caracas' military hospital ever since.

During more than 14 years in office, Chavez routinely challenged the status quo at home and internationally.

He declared a socialist revolution in Venezuela, crusaded against US influence, championed a leftist revival across Latin America, and over time, gradually placed all state institutions under his personal control.

But the former army paratrooper commander, who rose to fame by launching a failed 1992 coup, never groomed a successor.

His death sets up a snap presidential election after his illness prevented him from taking the oath of office when he was re-elected last year.

Under the constitution, the head of Congress, Diosdado Cabello, would assume the interim presidency.

However, Mr Maduro is Chavez's self-annointed successor and has been holding the reigns since the president's health took a turn for the worse.

The man Chavez defeated in October's presidential elections, Miranda state Governor Henrique Capriles, is expected to represent the opposition in any new national polls.

More follows...

littlebytesnews's insight:

His successor is a former bus driver who didn't graduate high school, but Chavez chose him as successor despite the Constitution recognizing the head of Congress as the interim president. Nicolas Maduro was chosen by Chavez for his loyalty to Chavez and his support of his socialist policies.

Today his self appointed successor claimed the US was responsible for infecting Chavez with cancer and said they would seek some type of retaliation and expelled two US diplomats:

Hours before Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez died, his second-in-command accused enemies of giving him cancer and announced the expulsion of two U.S. diplomats for an alleged plot to destabilize the government.

"There's no doubt that Commandante Chavez's health came under attack by the enemy," Vice President Nicolas Maduro said in an address to the nation from the presidential palace.

"The old enemies of our fatherland looked for a way to harm his health,'' according to Maduro, drawing a parallel to the illness and 2004 death of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, which some supporters blamed on poisoning by Israeli agents.

He said a special commission would investigate how Chavez, 58, ended up with the unspecified cancer that months of chemotherapy and radiation and four surgeries failed to tame.

State Department spokesman Patrick Ventrell said in a statement it was "absurd" to suggest that the U.S. was somehow involved in Chavez's illness.

Maduro accused one of them, David Delmonaco, of spying and meeting with Venezuelan military officials for nefarious purposes. The expulsion of the second, Devlin Kostal, was announced soon after.

Defense Department spokesman Lt. Col. Todd Breasseale said Delmonaco would be leaving Caracas and that Kostal was already in the U.S. and denied the allegations against them.

"We completely reject the Venezuelan government's claim that the United States is involved in any type of conspiracy to destabilize Venezuela government," he said.

Ventrell also dismissed the accusations.

As a result it doesn't sound like US-Venezuela relations will improve. Hugo Chavez called the US the great emperor and saw the US as a threat and believed the US sought a military coup against him in 2008. Chavez nationalized business and banks in Venezuela, telling the people he believed in "spreading the wealth'', much like Obama has done in the US after saying he wants to 'spread the wealth' and nationalizing the car industry with a bailout and the banks.

The president had not been seen in public for the three months but the cult of his personality kept his leadership alive.

Hugo Chavez was one of the most charismatic and controversial leaders of our time.

A master of the spotlight, his military fatigues and synthetic red tracksuits underlining his socialist credentials made him a photographer's dream.

Best of all were the shots that captured him with his pet parrot, named after a Venezuelan General, and sometimes sporting a tiny red beret to match his own.

No wonder he caught the imagination of Hollywood filmstars and directors. One day attending premieres with Oliver Stone, the next sharing jokes with Naomi Campbell.

Mr Chavez in a Cuban hospital with his daughters

Mr Chavez was a former soldier who was elected president in 1998, after being imprisoned for a failed coup seven years earlier.

His nineties brand of revolutionary socialism won him plenty of affection amongst the poor, with many of his supporters viewing him with almost religious reverence.

It was an emotional connection he was happy to milk on his weekly television show, Alo Presidente. The masses tuning in for his rambling poetry recitals and even stranger song and dance routines.

His country's vast oil reserves gave the president the money to tackle poverty, boosting spending on health and education. But corruption and mismanagement left the economy struggling and democracy withered under his rule.

An increasingly autocratic Mr Chavez changed the constitution to allow unlimited presidential terms, stamped hard on press freedom and nationalised many of the country's industries.

A natural firebrand, he didn't confine himself to Latin American politics. Instead he took on the West by courting fellow controversial figures like Cuba's Fidel Castro and  Libya's Muammar Gaddafi, forging a close alliance with Iran and offering Argentina support on the Falklands.

But Mr Chavez saved most of his wrath for the Americans, regularly referring to George W Bush as Mr Danger, and accusing Washington of "fighting terror with terror" in Afghanistan.

In one particularly bellicose statement in 2006 he appeared at the UN a day after the former American president and stated: "The Devil came here yesterday. It smells of sulphur still".

The Obama White House has expressed relief at Chavez's death and believe Hugo Chavez was trying to cause trouble between the US and Venezuela, and calling GWB "the Devil''. Obama has finally issued a short statement in response to the death of Hugo Chavez, stating that he hopes the people of Venezuela will reach out for democracy and peacful policies and respect for the rule of law. [That's almost laughable considering Obama has been following similar policies in the US and ignoring the rule of law when it comes to immigration, DOMA and nationaling banks and the auto industry.

US representatives and analysts see the death of Chavez as a blow for socialism and could be an opportunity for South American countries to revive their economies and move away from socialism. Cuba has the largest oil reserves in the world, but has given Cuba a lot of power in the world market despite competition with Saudi Arabia.

According to the AP, Chavez chosen successor Maduro is a loyalist who would keep Chavez legacy and policies in place.

However, "Maduro now faces the daunting task of rallying support in a deeply divided country while maintaining unity within his party's ranks.

Maduro decidedly lacks the vibrant personality that made Chavez a one-man political phenomenon in Venezuela, but he has the advantage of being Chavez's hand-picked successor.

The mustachioed 50-year-old former bus driver won Chavez's trust as a loyal spokesman who echoed the president's stances. How Maduro will lead in Chavez's absence remains to be seen, although he's widely known as both a skilled negotiator and a leader who views upholding his mentor's legacy as his personal crusade and responsibility.

One of the biggest tasks Maduro will likely face is attempting to hold together a diverse movement that includes radical leftists, moderates and many current and former military officers.

Analysts have speculated that differences might emerge between factions led by Maduro and Diosdado Cabello, the influential National Assembly president who is thought to wield power within the military. But thus far both men have denied such divisions and vowed to remain united.

After Chavez's Dec. 11 cancer surgery, Maduro stepped up his public appearances to fill the void, providing regular updates on the president's condition, calling for unity among allies and lambasting the opposition.

Maduro also showed how he could attempt to continue Chavez's socialist-inspired project. Speaking at one December rally, he vowed in vague terms to maintain policies that have angered the country's leading business federation, Fedecamaras, which was long at odds with the president.

"We aren't going to give dollars to Fedecamaras. What we're going to give them is pains, headaches with this Bolivarian Revolution," Maduro shouted, his voice hoarse. "I swear to you ... we're never going to betray the people of Venezuela!"

Chavez's deteriorating health led him on Dec. 8 to announce Maduro as his chosen successor. He said that if his illness prevented him from being sworn in on Jan. 10, government supporters should rally around Maduro and elect him president.

Maduro is expected to keep promoting programs such as free medical clinics staffed by Cuban doctors and subsidized food stores, which have endeared the president with the country's vast numbers of poor. Maduro has vowed to block a return to past policies that he said had benefited the wealthy.

"Our people will never again see the bourgeoisie plundering this country," Maduro said, adding, "Better to be dead than traitors to the people and to Chavez!"

That loyalty made Maduro a logical choice, political observers said.

"Maduro combines two characteristics that influenced Chavez in his decision to designate him as successor: first, his loyalty to the party leadership, and second, his positions in favor of popular measures," such as social programs for the poor, said Steve Ellner, a political scientist at Venezuela's University of Oriente.

In his youth, Maduro drove a bus for the Caracas Metro transit system and later became a union leader."

Maduro "is perceived by Chavez as a negotiator with diplomatic skills who could potentially gather the support of the different factions and keep it united in the difficult months ahead," said Diego Moya-Ocampos, an analyst with the London-based consulting firm IHS Global Insight.

"Nevertheless, he is not necessarily perceived as such within all the top ranks of the ruling United Socialist Party of Venezuela and the armed forces," Moya-Ocampos added.

Jennifer McCoy, a political science professor at Georgia State University, described Maduro as an easygoing man who has shown a willingness to talk with government opponents.

"He's always been someone who is easy to talk to," said McCoy, director of the Americas program at the Carter Center, which helped the Organization of American States facilitate dialogue between the government and opposition after a 2002 coup that briefly ousted Chavez.

Maduro was always willing "to discuss the issues, and I think that's really important going forward for Venezuela," McCoy said.

Before Chavez underwent his latest operation in December, he explained why he had chosen Maduro:

"He's one of the young leaders with the greatest ability to continue, if I'm unable to — God knows what he does — if I'm unable to, to continue with his firm hand, with his gaze, with his heart of a man of the people, with his gift for people, with his intelligence, with the international recognition he's earned, with his leadership, leading the presidency."'s%20Successor/id-12a921c5f345420f94a1d5ade323cd1a

Now that Chavez has died will Obama reach out more to Venezuela and attend his funeral?? Many in Chavez party are pro-Cuba and pro-communist, however many countries have depended upon Chavez and Venezuela to keep their economies strong through the oil industry. However, there are many in the Chavez party who are not as socialist as Chavez, but his successor is seen as a hardline socialist like Chavez.

Napolitano promises to release more illegals...But she knew nothing of the first 2000 released? Yeah right!

Napolitano promises to release more illegals...But she knew nothing of the first 2000 released? Yeah right! | Littlebytesnews Current Events |
WASHINGTON -- Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano promised to release more illegal immigrants into the United States, saying the budget sequester has left her no choice.

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano promised to release more illegal immigrants into the United States, saying the budget sequester has left her no choice.

Several hundred detainees have already released because of the sequester, she insisted. They were released on bail, or because their legal status had changed, she said.

“We’re going to continue to do that … for the foreseeable future,” Napolitano said at a March 4 breakfast meeting hosted by Politico. “We are going to manage our way through this by identifying the lowest risk detainees, and putting them into some kind of alternative to release.”

However, Napolitano’s statement clashed with a March 1 report by The Associated Press, which said that internal agency documents show that her managers had already released 2,000 detainees, and planned to release 3,000 more detainees.

Napolitano’s threat reflects the White House’s determination to ramp up public distress until the GOP agrees to another tax increase.

Under the sequester, budgets at the Pentagon and the numerous civilian agencies are being cut by roughly 8 percent from March to September. The cuts will trim roughly 1 percent from federal spending in 2013.

President Barack Obama suggested the sequester plan in 2011, and is now refusing any changes until the GOP agrees to tax increases.

There are roughly 11 million illegal immigrants in the country, of whom roughly 7 million are working, mostly in low-skill jobs. However, roughly 20 million Americans are without jobs, including several million Americans with few job skills.

In the run-up to the 2012 election, Obama offered work permits to more than 750,000 illegals, and rolled back enforcement of immigration law.

Napolitano’s threat to release more illegals was not criticized by Tom Ridge, a former secretary of Homeland Security under George W. Bush, who was also interviewed at the Politico breakfast.

Instead, Ridge complained that the controversy over the illegals’ release threatened passage of the draft immigration rewrite.

Progress towards a legislative success “gets sidelined — well, did you release 2,000? Didn’t you release 2,000? What about this, what about that?” Ridge complained.

The pending rewrite would offer immediate work permits to roughly 11 million illegal immigrants, a path for their relatives to join them in the United States, plus a ramped-up flow of foreign workers into the United States, despite the high unemployment rate.

Video: CO passes ban on concealed guns on campus, fees for background checks&magazine limits | Littlebytesnews Current Events |
State, Veterans, Military Affairs Committee hears three gun bills, one requring universal gun background checks, one requiring gun purchasers to pay for those checks, and banning concealed carry weapons in campus buildings.

The House State, Veterans, and Military affairs Committee passed a measure requiring gun buyers to pay for mandatory background check on Monday.

The vote was a 3-2 party line on House Bill 1228.

The bill would have gun buyers pay what amounts to about a $10 or $12 fee for a Colorado Bureau of Investigation instant background check. The bureau faced a lengthy backlog in conducting the checks as gun sales surged in the wake of calls for gun restrictions after the mass shooting at an elementary school in Connecticut.

"This is a logical thing," said state Sen. Rollie Heath, D-Boulder, one of the sponsors. "This is a fee that should be charged to the people requesting it."

Opponents pointed out the bill offers no set fee.

"No cap on the fee is a dangerous thing," said Dave Kopel, a professor at the University of Denver law school and author of a law-school textbook on firearms law and policy.

For the most part, the hearing was civil, but there was rowdy moment toward the end when the crowd pushed for gun dealer to be able to address the committee. The outburst quickly subsided.

Background checks in Colorado are currently free for gun purchasers, and the money to pay for the fees comes out the state's general fund.

A Colorado Senate committee on Monday passed a measure that bans ammunition magazines of more than 15 rounds after several hours of testimony from a barrage of experts, law enforcement officials and victims of mass shootings.

House Bill 1224 passed on 3-2 party line vote and moves to the Senate floor on Friday.

Sen. Mary Hodge, D-Brighton, the Senate sponsor of the bill, said several recent shooting sprees, including ones in Aurora and Newtown, Conn., were committed with gun magazines that held more than 15 rounds.

"This bill is an attempt to reduce the slaughter," Hodge said.

The bill — which also limits shotguns to having eight shells —passed through the House chamber by a 34-31margin in February before moving on to the Senate.

Those testifying in favor of the bill included Patricia Maisch, a woman who helped disable Jared Loughner, the shooter who killed six and wounded 13 people, including U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, outside a Tucson grocery story in January 2011. Also testifying in favor was Theresa Hoover, mother of A.J. Boik, a victim in the Aurora theater shooting.

Meanwhile, Republicans balked at the measure.

"These awful tragedies should be prevented, but there's a real deep disagreement as to how we get there," said Sen. Kevin Lundberg, R-Berthoud, who added that the right of ordinary citizens to defend themselves would be infringed.

Casey Anthony pleads her case today in a Tampa court

Casey Anthony pleads her case today in a Tampa court | Littlebytesnews Current Events |
Casey Anthony says she doesn't have a job, doesn't have any means of support and owes a great deal of money.

During a hearing, she told a federally appointed trustee that she has less than $500 in cash and is living with a friend.  The unnamed friend lives somewhere in Florida, but it was not disclosed where the friend lives.  Anthony says she owes her former attorney, Jose Baez more than  $300,000 for defending her during her murder trial. Anthony was found not guilty of killing her own daughter in 2011.

Since then she says she has received less than $2,000 in donations from strangers and has not had any job.  Attorney Scott Shuker isn't buying Anthony's story. Shuker represents Zenaida Gonzalez. Gonzalez is suing Anthony for damaging her reputation during the murder trial. Anthony told investigators that someone named Zenaida Gonzalez had kidnapped her daughter.

Shuker says he believes Anthony has a source of income that she isn't revealing. " From the smell test,  it didn't smell right. Any time you see an attorney at what is supposed to be a no asset case, being that active.

littlebytesnews's insight:

What a life...perhaps she will go to jail for her unpaid attorney fees?? How is she able to hire attorneys to represent her in bankruptcy?? She might have been better off in least she'd have a place to live, food, etc??

Brittany Turany's curator insight, March 5, 2013 2:27 PM

I found this article very interesting. It can apply to the amendments in that Casey Anthony is not being retried for murder which would impede on her 5th Amendment right. However, she is being sued for ruining somebody's reputation during her murder trial. Yes, she has the right to free speach, but this doesn't cover slander. I just find it interesting how our legal system makes workds and this article definately highlights multiple aspects of it.

Samantha Iversen's comment, March 9, 2013 11:15 PM
I agree. It is definitely a great example of the 5th amendment at work. She definitely ruined several people's reputations during her trial. I just wonder who in the world would donate money to her... I agree that what she is saying doesn't seem right. She lied before and will lie again.

So they just come here to take advantage of our entitlement system, collect welfare, get free health care, have kids and create anchor babies and leave or take jobs from law abiding immigrants and citizens? If they are unwilling to pay for the cost of becoming legal than they are likely going to be too lazy to work and only want handouts. Santorum: Americans Seeing Obama for the Demagogue He Has Become--More Like Demagogue He Has Been

Santorum: Americans Seeing Obama for the Demagogue He Has Become--More Like Demagogue He Has Been | Littlebytesnews Current Events |

Fox Nation: DANA PERINO, “ON THE RECORD” GUEST HOST: All right, let’s get started. Good evening. I’m Dana Perino, in for Greta van Susteren. So it’s official, the sequester is here, $85 billion in across-the-board cuts will start taking effect.

Former senator Rick Santorum accusing the president of, quote, “manipulating the process in a ruthless way to scare the American people.” Senator Santorum, you are coming to us from Charleston, South Carolina, one of my favorite cities in all the world! Thank you for joining us tonight.

PERINO: You don’t disagree with the amount of cuts. You disagree with how they’ve gone about it, is that right?

SANTORUM: Well, I disagree with several things. Number one, I don’t agree with the amount of cuts. It’s — it’s — it’s a pittance compared to what we’re going to have to do to get this fiscal house in order in Washington, D.C.

But I disagree with the fact that they’re taking half the cuts out of 16 percent of the budget, which is the Defense Department, which has already had a half a trillion dollars in cuts taken from it just a couple of years ago through this president and the Democratic Congress.

And so for that piece of the budget, which I think in most Americans’s mind is the most important thing that the federal government does — it’s the indispensable thing. Nobody else can do national security except the federal government. And it leaves two thirds of the budget, entitlements alone.

And for the president to go out and to, as I said, manipulate the American public by, you know, conjuring up all of these horrific images — I’m — you know, given the president’s rhetoric, I’m surprised the lights are still on in this studio compared to what the president was suggesting was going to happen.

PERINO: Yes, it does seem that if this were a game of poker that the White House overplayed its hand. Do you think that they are feeling that way tonight at the White House?

SANTORUM: Well, all I can tell you is that I saw the president’s press conference today, and he did not look like a very confident guy. He was back-pedaling from his statements. I think he did overstate the case. And the American public is simply not going to see the kind of cataclysmic things that he was predicting as he stood in front of our troops.

He also could avoid it. And this is the other thing that’s so — so disheartening about this president’s leadership. He could avoid really all of the painful things by working with Congress and simply allocating resources and agree to allocate resources in places where we don’t need to spend this money.

That’s just — you know, that’s just common sense leadership. That’s working together with people. This president has shown no indication of doing so. He seems to be fixated on an agenda to demonize Republicans so he can get a stronger political hand and force through more of his policies that are destroying our economy.

PERINO: I’ve always felt that you had a really good pulse on the American people and how they were looking at things, you know, from an outside the Beltway perspective, or even here, from outside of New York. Both parties are trying to blame one another. But out there in the real world, what are you hearing from people? Who do they blame?

SANTORUM: A pox on everybody’s house. That’s really what I’m hearing more than anything else, is that, you know, they’re – they’re beginning to see President Obama for the demagogue that he has turned into. I mean, he simply did not act — I mean, he was partisan in the last four years, but he’s taken it to a whole new level that I’ve never seen from a president.

And I think, you know, the average American is seeing it and seeing him over the top and really beginning to discount him a little bit in his rhetoric.

But let’s be honest, they do see the Congress as incompetent and not able to get their act together and put forth anything that looks like a plan. And they blame both parties. Whether both parties should be blamed or not is really not the point. They are blaming both parties. And right now, it’s just — they’re washing their hands on what’s going in Washington, D.C.

littlebytesnews's insight:

I liked Santorum as a Presidential candidate out of the choice we had in the end. Unfortunately, he lost due to the division in the party and the attacks by Gingrich. I believe Gingrich split the vote too long and cost Santorum the election. However, I was willing to settle for Romney in the end, and the more I learned about Romney the more I was comfortable with accepting him as our candidate. Of course anyone would have been better then what we have now…but one thing Santorum has wrong, Obama didn’t become a demagogue, he’s been one and has always been partisan.

Dr. Benjamin Carson On Gun Control: "It Depends On Where You Live"

Mediaite: Asked by Beck for his thoughts on the Second Amendment, Carson gave the popular pro-gun argument: “There’s a reason for the Second Amendment; people do have the right to have weapons.”

But when asked whether people should be allowed to own “semi-automatic weapons,” the doctor replied: “It depends on where you live.”

“I think if you live in the midst of a lot of people, and I’m afraid that that semi-automatic weapon is going to fall into the hands of a crazy person, I would rather you not have it,” Carson elaborated.

However, if you live “out in the country somewhere by yourself” and want to own a semi-automatic weapon, he added, “I’ve no problem with that.”

What a shame....he may have ended any political future with this statement. Our Constitutional rights are unalienable rights that are not limited by government but should be protected by our government. The Constitution limits the powers of the government not the rights of the people.

This article is going through an interview where Dr. Carson explains his views.  He believes that it should be allowed to own guns! however, with the more dangerous guns, he believes it should depend on where you live.  I think that specific guns should be allowed for anyone, while some only special people should have.

Andrew Lawrence's curator insight, March 7, 2013 8:05 AM

Interesting take on it. This may be what the country needs. Don't give up the right for guns, just limit the location. Dr. Carson may be just another political analyst looking for attention, but his theory shows some promise. What he said about guns falling into the hands of crazy people is true; you're more likely to find them in cities. So why not limit rifles to the open country?

Limiting them to location will only limit law abiding citizens. Criminals will never comply with the law regardless of location.

But Instead, we have put forth crisis after another, each one giving the Democrats opportunities to do things their way or thought they couldn’t do their way.... But NO they keep meandering around lost animals.
Take the amount of Government warfare you have witnessed in the last four years.  Now think about who that was attached to.
Now do you think that all was by DESIGN?...
this quote from Sen. Jerry Moran
“I was standing on the Senate floor and I was approached by Sen. Reid,” Moran said during a speech Thursday hosted by the Ripon Society.  “I knew Sen. Reid from my days in the House.  Sen. Reid had a locker just a few down from me in the House gym, and we’d see each other each morning for a long number of years.  And Sen. Reid that day, in a casual conversation, asked me, ‘Jerry, how do you like the Senate?’  My response was that I’m very grateful for the opportunity that I’ve been given.  But Leader, we’re not doing anything.  Sen. Reid’s response was, ‘Jerry, you need to understand that we’re not going to do anything until after the election.’”
So 'stupid is as stupid does'. So the republicans are as much to blame for the same crisis after crisis. Obama is a traitor and so is the rest of the goons on the Hill. Our only hope is that we oust everybody on the Hill get new ones. I think some of them have been there way to long.
admitting to the “I’ll lie and you swear to it” routine. Is this Laurel and Hardy?
This is the most evil of plans . Collapse the system . The people will beg you to give them a total transformation . What could that be hmmmm . Socialism ???
This is diabolical like something out of a Ayn Rand novel. If you Libs can’t see this as nothing else but pure philosophical beliefs of a takeover our government and are not outraged then you are part of that conspiracy..

Obama and Napolitano to make sure middle class feel 'pain' of budget cuts

Obama and Napolitano to make sure middle class feel 'pain' of budget cuts | Littlebytesnews Current Events |

U.S. President Barack Obama used his weekly online address Saturday to warn Americans who will be affected by $85 billion US in government spending cuts, which are due to roll out gradually after Republicans and Democrats failed to reach a budget deal.

“It's important to understand that while not everyone will feel the pain of these cuts right away, the pain will be real,” Obama said.

“Many middle-class families will have their lives disrupted in a significant way. Beginning this week, businesses that work with the military will have to lay folks off," he said. "Communities near military bases will take a serious blow.

He went on to say that hundreds of thousands of Americans who serve their country on security matters — including border control agents, FBI agents, and especially civilians who work with the defence department — will see their wages cut and their hours reduced.

There is talk that some employees will have to take furloughs, or unpaid days off. The White House has speculated that thousands of Federal Aviation Administration may have to take unpaid leave.

On the domestic side, everything from health care and education to law enforcement and scientific research is expected to be affected by the budget cuts.

Border crossing, air travel concerns

For Canadians, border crossing is an immediate worry. Terry Shaw, general manager of the Manitoba Trucking Association, says the focus of concern is cuts to Homeland Security and how it will affect Canadian truck traffic bound for U.S. customers.

His group has been advised those cuts will come into effect April 1, meaning 5,000 U.S. border agents could lose their jobs.

The association says two-thirds of goods sent to the states each day arrive by truck, so it's readying for severe delays.

Officials from the association say they have been warned that border crossings that used to take one hour could now last up to five hours.

"We’ve been telling our members today to plan for the worst," said Shaw. He said the effects of the cuts at the border will be seen within hours or days rather than weeks.

Air travellers are also being warned to expect longer wait times at some U.S. airports starting in the coming weeks.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection is preparing to reduce hours for its employees — the equivalent of losing 2,700 inspectors.

Pentagon faces $46 billion in cuts

The automatic across-the-board budget cuts — termed "sequestration" in Washington — were confirmed after Obama and congressional Republicans failed to strike a deal Friday to avert the reductions.

A Washington State Rep. who serves as a ranking republican on the State Transportation Committee may be an unlikely proponent of a tax that would require everyone who buys a bike for more than $500 to pay a $25 fee.

First they claim it's cars and green house gases and now they claim it's bikes...soon it will be breathing and existing and we will have to pay a tax to live or be eliminated next.

Airport Spokesmen Deny Napolitano’s Claims Lines Already Increasing Due To Sequester

Airport Spokesmen Deny Napolitano’s Claims Lines Already Increasing Due To Sequester | Littlebytesnews Current Events |

Excerpted from Telegraph:

Airports have denied a claim by Janet Napolitano, the secretary of homeland security, that the sequester is already causing long delays for travelers at security screening checkpoints.

Ms Napolitano said today that major airports were seeing lines “150 to 200 per cent as long as we would normally expect” as result of the federal spending cuts that went into force on Friday.

“We’re already seeing the effects at some of the ports of entry, the big airports, for example. Some of them had very long lines this weekend,” she told a breakfast event organised by Politico.

When pressed for specifics she cited Chicago’s O’Hare, Atlanta’s Hartfield-Jackson and Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), adding: “I don’t mean to scare, I mean to inform.”

However, when contacted by The Daily Telegraph, spokespeople for both O’Hare and LAX, as well as representatives from the travel industry, denied that airports had been hit by delays.

“We haven’t had any slowdowns at all,” said Marshall Lowe, a spokesman for LAX. Mr Lowe said that he had been on duty over the weekend and received no reports of unusual security delays.

littlebytesnews's insight:

Earlier today Janet Napolitano, DHS Secretary claimed that lines were already increasing at US airports. However, according to spokesmen from two of the largest airports in Chicago and Los Angeles are already denying those claims.
