Environuts blame Koch,Exxon for Secret funding to build vast network of climate denial thinktanks

Environuts blame Koch,Exxon for Secret funding to build vast network of climate denial thinktanks | Littlebytesnews Current Events | Scoop.it
Anonymous billionaires donated $120m to more than 100 anti-climate groups working to discredit climate change science

Conservative billionaires used a secretive funding route to channel nearly $120m (£77m) to more than 100 groups casting doubt about the science behind climate change, the Guardian has learned.

The funds, doled out between 2002 and 2010, helped build a vast network of thinktanks and activist groups working to a single purpose: to redefine climate change from neutral scientific fact to a highly polarising "wedge issue" for hardcore conservatives.

The millions were routed through two trusts, Donors Trust and theDonors Capital Fund, operating out of a generic town house in the northern Virginia suburbs of Washington DC. Donors Capital caters to those making donations of $1m or more.

Whitney Ball, chief executive of the Donors Trust told the Guardian that her organisation assured wealthy donors that their funds would never by diverted to liberal causes.

"We exist to help donors promote liberty which we understand to be limited government, personal responsibility, and free enterprise," she said in an interview.

By definition that means none of the money is going to end up with groups like Greenpeace, she said. "It won't be going to liberals."

Ball won't divulge names, but she said the stable of donors represents a wide range of opinion on the American right. Increasingly over the years, those conservative donors have been pushing funds towards organisations working to discredit climate science or block climate action.

Donors exhibit sharp differences of opinion on many issues, Ball said. They run the spectrum of conservative opinion, from social conservatives to libertarians. But in opposing mandatory cuts to greenhouse gas emissions, they found common ground.

By 2010, the dark money amounted to $118m distributed to 102 thinktanks or action groups which have a record of denying the existence of a human factor in climate change, or opposing environmental regulations.

The money flowed to Washington thinktanks embedded in Republican party politics, obscure policy forums in Alaska and Tennessee, contrarian scientists at Harvard and lesser institutions, even to buy up DVDs of a film attacking Al Gore.

The ready stream of cash set off a conservative backlash against Barack Obama's environmental agenda that wrecked any chance of Congress taking action on climate change.

Graphic: climate denial funding

Those same groups are now mobilising against Obama's efforts to act on climate change in his second term. A top recipient of the secret funds on Wednesday put out a point-by-point critique of the climate content in the president's state of the union address.

And it was all done with a guarantee of complete anonymity for the donors who wished to remain hidden.

"The funding of the denial machine is becoming increasingly invisible to public scrutiny. It's also growing. Budgets for all these different groups are growing," said Kert Davies, research director of Greenpeace, which compiled the data on funding of the anti-climate groups using tax records.

"These groups are increasingly getting money from sources that are anonymous or untraceable. There is no transparency, no accountability for the money. There is no way to tell who is funding them," Davies said.

The trusts were established for the express purpose of managing donations to a host of conservative causes.

Such vehicles, called donor-advised funds, are not uncommon in America. They offer a number of advantages to wealthy donors. They are convenient, cheaper to run than a private foundation, offer tax breaks and are lawful.

That opposition hardened over the years, especially from the mid-2000s where the Greenpeace record shows a sharp spike in funds to the anti-climate cause.

In effect, the Donors Trust was bankrolling a movement, saidRobert Brulle, a Drexel University sociologist who has extensively researched the networks of ultra-conservative donors.

"This is what I call the counter-movement, a large-scale effort that is an organised effort and that is part and parcel of the conservative movement in the United States " Brulle said. "We don't know where a lot of the money is coming from, but we do know that Donors Trust is just one example of the dark money flowing into this effort."

In his view, Brulle said: "Donors Trust is just the tip of a very big iceberg."

The rise of that movement is evident in the funding stream. In 2002, the two trusts raised less than $900,000 for the anti-climate cause. That was a fraction of what Exxon Mobil or the conservative oil billionaire Koch brothers donated to climate sceptic groups that year.

By 2010, the two Donor Trusts between them were channelling just under $30m to a host of conservative organisations opposing climate action or science. That accounted to 46% of all their grants to conservative causes, according to the Greenpeace analysis.

Obamacare now wants to tax smart phones, tablets, and apps. Please people, stop voting for Democrats.

Paul, Cruz Attach Drone Prohibition to Spending Bill

Paul, Cruz Attach Drone Prohibition to Spending Bill | Littlebytesnews Current Events | Scoop.it
Sen. Rand Paul plans to continue his challenge to the Obama administration s drone policy, following his 13-hour filibuster against CIA Director John Brennan last week.
littlebytesnews's insight:

I'm ok with using drones in foreign countries we are at war with, however, if these drones are supposed to be more accurate and targted why are so many women and children ending up dead than actual terrorists?

Sure, some might say it's collateral damage when women and children end up dead but if we are going to look like we are a humanitarian country you'd think they would try to lessen the collateral damage and find a way to more directly capture and/or kill the actual terrorists.

When they capture a terror leader like Osama Bin Laden's son-in law they should immediately be taken to Gitmo for interrogation so that we are able to obtain important intelligence information to capture the next leader. Otherwise killing them all like Obama has been doing or treating them like a citizen in a civilian court like Obama is doing with Osama's son in-law, takes away any chance of gathering the necessary information we might need to capture or kill the next leader because they are either dead or they will plead the 5th and refuse to say anything.

If they are treated as enemy combatants we are able to interrogate them under the laws of war. Under the new laws of war, U.S. forces must adhere to the standards of the Geneva Conventions' Common Article 3, which is now part of U.S. law and prohibits "outrages upon personal dignity, in particular humiliating and degrading treatment."

[In 2006] The Army has adopted 16 standard interrogation tactics that are carryovers from previous field manuals, including such approaches as direct questioning, offering positive incentives and playing on a detainee's emotions. Three expanded techniques -- good cop, bad cop; pretending to be an official from another country; and detention in a separate cell from others -- are allowed but require approval from senior officers. Officials originally considered keeping those three techniques classified but decided to make them public for the sake of full transparency.

Gone are techniques that at one point Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld approved for use at Guantanamo Bay and later appeared in Iraq, such as putting detainees in stress positions; manipulating their sleep patterns, diet and environment; and using dogs and sexually provocative behavior. Also prohibited is waterboarding, which involves putting detainees on boards and simulating drowning.

The military urges interrogators to ask themselves two questions if they think they may be crossing the line: if they think the technique could violate the law; and "if the proposed approach technique were used by the enemy against one of your fellow soldiers, would you believe the soldier had been abused?"

Want to stop the next Todd Akin?: Don’t attack conservative candidates, train them--No, teach common sense&responsibility

Want to stop the next Todd Akin?: Don’t attack conservative candidates, train them--No, teach common sense&responsibility | Littlebytesnews Current Events | Scoop.it
By now, you've read the  New York Times story about a group given the Orwellian name, (This IMO is a better way to get viable conservative candidates than playing in primaries (Rove's CVP or CFG/FW) http://t.co/kdTff6ScqX)...
littlebytesnews's insight:

Train them?? I would hope if you are going to run for elected office you have campaign managers with experience and knowledge about running a PR campaign and sticking to the issues without putting your foot in your mouth. Of course I never thought what Todd Akin said was really wrong, but in today's politically correct times we have to be careful not to hurt the liberals and feminists feelings...but why?

We aren't trying to get them to vote for us...we want Conservatives to vote for Conservatives, not RINOs. Sure we need to reach out to Independents and moderate DEMs, but if they don't agree with the GOP on social issues, such as abortion or traditional marriage, it is not likely they will ever side with the GOP on anything else. Most DEMs vote with emotions rather than common sense and values. They lack the traditional values and morals Conservatives have and would rather vote for entitlements and social issues rather than fiscal issues. They care more about what's in it for them rather than what they can do for others.

Progressives/libs think entitlement programs like welfare are helping the poor, when in reality they are keeping them poor and dependent. The liberal politicians keep pushing entitlements and the theory that they are for the poor to keep playing on the emotions of other liberals because that is where the votes are for Democrats.

I don't think the GOP can ever win on emotion by offering more entitlements because the GOP believes in personal responsibility and less entitlements. Therefore, the GOP have to stick to conservative principles and stand by our core values when it comes to social issues and fiscal issues. We must continue to fight for and defend our unalieanable rights of life, liberty and happiness, which are contained in our Constitutional Rights. But, what the GOP needs to do is educate the moderate DEMs and Independents who don't realize that hard work and personal responsibilitly are the key to prosperity and as you become more successful you are able to help lift the poor by offering more to charity and help the poor realize government dependence is not the answer.

The Independents and moderate Democrats need to learn basic economics and common sense when it comes to depending on themselves rather than the government to take care of them. If they are not taught these things and shown how socialism, communism and other forms of government have failed throughout history they will never realize the value of the free market, personal responsibility and less government. We didn't get to where we are today by socialism, but we did get to where we are economically because of government expansion and entitlements. Entitlement spending are the greatest burden on the federal government right now. However, Democrats would rather increase taxes, spend and borrow more rather than reduce spending, cut entitlements and give individuals and companies more freedom to grow fiscally independent and economically successful.

Too many liberals don't seem to understand that the more you tax people/the rich, such as job creators and the more you limit their ability to expand and grow the less they will hire, the less they will grow and the less they will succeed. This kind of policy only limits economic growth and leads many companies to leave the country to where they are taxed less and under less regulations. In result it leads to less jobs and less economic prosperity for America.

So I don't think it's really that we need to train Conservatives on what to say and do, more than it is educating the Independents and moderate Democrats about common sense and economics 101. Those who believe in abortion and same sex marriage will never vote with the GOP because they are emotional voters and don't vote with their brains but their feelings.

White house closed to the public, secret sercive says it's because they cannot afford the added security costs.

Jon Smith's curator insight, March 22, 2013 10:10 PM

The author of this article believes that the sequester cuts on Secret Service is a move by Obama to get the public hostile toward Republicans. Apparently the savings over the next seven months will be only $2 million. Truthfullly, the sequester is just due to the fact that our government can't work together cohesively enough. I would think by now that looking back on history and seeing that the fiscal cliff leading up to a sequester has failed to be a deterrent for deciding on a budget, that Congress would get rid of it. But it's still there and still not working. Honestly, we call ourselves the greatest nation in the world and we keep a law that causes us to skimp on the security of our government because they can't agree on a budget? You mine as well say "Look at us. We are so divided that we can't decide on a budget. Our temporary solution will be to make ourselves vulnerable and be self destructive". It makes for the perfect opportunity for attack. So the sequester was a hopeful idea but now that we know it doesn't work, why not get rid of it?
