Paul, Cruz Attach Drone Prohibition to Spending Bill

Paul, Cruz Attach Drone Prohibition to Spending Bill | Littlebytesnews Current Events | Scoop.it
Sen. Rand Paul plans to continue his challenge to the Obama administration s drone policy, following his 13-hour filibuster against CIA Director John Brennan last week.
littlebytesnews's insight:

I'm ok with using drones in foreign countries we are at war with, however, if these drones are supposed to be more accurate and targted why are so many women and children ending up dead than actual terrorists?

Sure, some might say it's collateral damage when women and children end up dead but if we are going to look like we are a humanitarian country you'd think they would try to lessen the collateral damage and find a way to more directly capture and/or kill the actual terrorists.

When they capture a terror leader like Osama Bin Laden's son-in law they should immediately be taken to Gitmo for interrogation so that we are able to obtain important intelligence information to capture the next leader. Otherwise killing them all like Obama has been doing or treating them like a citizen in a civilian court like Obama is doing with Osama's son in-law, takes away any chance of gathering the necessary information we might need to capture or kill the next leader because they are either dead or they will plead the 5th and refuse to say anything.

If they are treated as enemy combatants we are able to interrogate them under the laws of war. Under the new laws of war, U.S. forces must adhere to the standards of the Geneva Conventions' Common Article 3, which is now part of U.S. law and prohibits "outrages upon personal dignity, in particular humiliating and degrading treatment."

[In 2006] The Army has adopted 16 standard interrogation tactics that are carryovers from previous field manuals, including such approaches as direct questioning, offering positive incentives and playing on a detainee's emotions. Three expanded techniques -- good cop, bad cop; pretending to be an official from another country; and detention in a separate cell from others -- are allowed but require approval from senior officers. Officials originally considered keeping those three techniques classified but decided to make them public for the sake of full transparency.

Gone are techniques that at one point Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld approved for use at Guantanamo Bay and later appeared in Iraq, such as putting detainees in stress positions; manipulating their sleep patterns, diet and environment; and using dogs and sexually provocative behavior. Also prohibited is waterboarding, which involves putting detainees on boards and simulating drowning.

The military urges interrogators to ask themselves two questions if they think they may be crossing the line: if they think the technique could violate the law; and "if the proposed approach technique were used by the enemy against one of your fellow soldiers, would you believe the soldier had been abused?"

Want to stop the next Todd Akin?: Don’t attack conservative candidates, train them--No, teach common sense&responsibility

Want to stop the next Todd Akin?: Don’t attack conservative candidates, train them--No, teach common sense&responsibility | Littlebytesnews Current Events | Scoop.it
By now, you've read the  New York Times story about a group given the Orwellian name, (This IMO is a better way to get viable conservative candidates than playing in primaries (Rove's CVP or CFG/FW) http://t.co/kdTff6ScqX)...
littlebytesnews's insight:

Train them?? I would hope if you are going to run for elected office you have campaign managers with experience and knowledge about running a PR campaign and sticking to the issues without putting your foot in your mouth. Of course I never thought what Todd Akin said was really wrong, but in today's politically correct times we have to be careful not to hurt the liberals and feminists feelings...but why?

We aren't trying to get them to vote for us...we want Conservatives to vote for Conservatives, not RINOs. Sure we need to reach out to Independents and moderate DEMs, but if they don't agree with the GOP on social issues, such as abortion or traditional marriage, it is not likely they will ever side with the GOP on anything else. Most DEMs vote with emotions rather than common sense and values. They lack the traditional values and morals Conservatives have and would rather vote for entitlements and social issues rather than fiscal issues. They care more about what's in it for them rather than what they can do for others.

Progressives/libs think entitlement programs like welfare are helping the poor, when in reality they are keeping them poor and dependent. The liberal politicians keep pushing entitlements and the theory that they are for the poor to keep playing on the emotions of other liberals because that is where the votes are for Democrats.

I don't think the GOP can ever win on emotion by offering more entitlements because the GOP believes in personal responsibility and less entitlements. Therefore, the GOP have to stick to conservative principles and stand by our core values when it comes to social issues and fiscal issues. We must continue to fight for and defend our unalieanable rights of life, liberty and happiness, which are contained in our Constitutional Rights. But, what the GOP needs to do is educate the moderate DEMs and Independents who don't realize that hard work and personal responsibilitly are the key to prosperity and as you become more successful you are able to help lift the poor by offering more to charity and help the poor realize government dependence is not the answer.

The Independents and moderate Democrats need to learn basic economics and common sense when it comes to depending on themselves rather than the government to take care of them. If they are not taught these things and shown how socialism, communism and other forms of government have failed throughout history they will never realize the value of the free market, personal responsibility and less government. We didn't get to where we are today by socialism, but we did get to where we are economically because of government expansion and entitlements. Entitlement spending are the greatest burden on the federal government right now. However, Democrats would rather increase taxes, spend and borrow more rather than reduce spending, cut entitlements and give individuals and companies more freedom to grow fiscally independent and economically successful.

Too many liberals don't seem to understand that the more you tax people/the rich, such as job creators and the more you limit their ability to expand and grow the less they will hire, the less they will grow and the less they will succeed. This kind of policy only limits economic growth and leads many companies to leave the country to where they are taxed less and under less regulations. In result it leads to less jobs and less economic prosperity for America.

So I don't think it's really that we need to train Conservatives on what to say and do, more than it is educating the Independents and moderate Democrats about common sense and economics 101. Those who believe in abortion and same sex marriage will never vote with the GOP because they are emotional voters and don't vote with their brains but their feelings.

White house closed to the public, secret sercive says it's because they cannot afford the added security costs.

Jon Smith's curator insight, March 22, 2013 10:10 PM

The author of this article believes that the sequester cuts on Secret Service is a move by Obama to get the public hostile toward Republicans. Apparently the savings over the next seven months will be only $2 million. Truthfullly, the sequester is just due to the fact that our government can't work together cohesively enough. I would think by now that looking back on history and seeing that the fiscal cliff leading up to a sequester has failed to be a deterrent for deciding on a budget, that Congress would get rid of it. But it's still there and still not working. Honestly, we call ourselves the greatest nation in the world and we keep a law that causes us to skimp on the security of our government because they can't agree on a budget? You mine as well say "Look at us. We are so divided that we can't decide on a budget. Our temporary solution will be to make ourselves vulnerable and be self destructive". It makes for the perfect opportunity for attack. So the sequester was a hopeful idea but now that we know it doesn't work, why not get rid of it?

Feds Say Man Deserved Arrest Because Jacket Said 'Occupy Everything'-Free Speech Banned In SCOTUS?

Feds Say Man Deserved Arrest Because Jacket Said 'Occupy Everything'-Free Speech Banned In SCOTUS? | Littlebytesnews Current Events | Scoop.it
A Florida man deserved to be arrested inside the Supreme Court building last year for wearing a jacket painted with "Occupy Everything," and is lucky he was only apprehended on unlawful entry charges, the Department of Justice says.

Fitzgerald was not disturbing anybody, but was repeatedly told by court staff to leave the building or remove the coat. Outside the building, about a dozen “Occupy” protesters were arrested.

Inside, Fitzgerald was handcuffed and arrested for unlawful entry as he was viewing an exhibit on slavery.

Here is the District of Columbia’s ‘unlawful entry’ statute:

Any person who, without lawful authority, shall enter, or attempt to enter, any public building, or other property, or part of such building, or other property, against the will of the lawful occupant or of the person lawfully in charge thereof or his or her agent, or being therein or thereon, without lawful authority to remain therein or thereon shall refuse to quit the same on the demand of the lawful occupant, or of the person lawfully in charge thereof or his or her agent, shall be deemed guilty of a misdemeanor, and on conviction thereof shall be punished by a fine of not more than $1,000, imprisonment for not more than 6 months, or both.

Prosecutors eventually dismissed the charges, and he sued. (.pdf) http://www.wired.com/images_blogs/threatlevel/2013/03/scotus-arrest.pdf  ;

To be sure, the courts have upheld convictions of those wearing inappropriate clothing inside the high court’s building — once in 2011 for individuals wearing orange shirts that said “Shut Down Guantanamo” and in 2007 for protesters wearing orange jump suits and black hoods — all in violation of the so-called “Display Clause.” http://codes.lp.findlaw.com/uscode/40/II/C/61/IV/6135

The Obama administration said Wednesday that Scott could also have been arrested and charged with violating the Display Clause, which makes it “unlawful to parade, stand, or move in processions or assemblages in the Supreme Court Building or grounds, or to display in the Building and grounds a flag, banner, or device designed or adapted to bring into public notice a party, organization, or movement.”

littlebytesnews's insight:

I just heard about this case today...It kind of makes sense to keep protests out of the actual court, but why would it matter if you are wearing these words, which doesn't really represent anything but a thought and just walking through the building, alone and not in a large disruptive group??

I disagreed with much of the Occupy Movement, especially for their violent protests which led to several arrests, vandalism and even rape in some of their camps, but this seems a bit ridiculous to hear.

Sure the Occupy Movement used the term "Occupy" to protest their fight against the 1% but this is just a statement on a jacket, not really representing a group or organization or even a movement. Not everyone in the Occupy Movement carried signs or wore clothing saying "Occupy Everything".

It seems senseless to have 'free speech zones'' in the Supreme Court which is supposed to protect our right to free speech, as long as we are not disrupting anyone or proceedings in or near the building/court.

What do you think??

UPDATE:

Related:

the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia asked a federal judge in Washington to dismiss Scott's case, which claims the authorities had no basis to make an arrest. The complaint also said the jacket's "pure speech" was protected under the First Amendment.

The government's legal team said today that Dolan had ample cause to detain Scott.

"At a bare minimum, the arresting officer’s belief that probable cause existed was certainly reasonable and in good faith," an assistant U.S. attorney, Jane Lyons, said in court papers seeking the dismissal of the suit.

On the day Scott was arrested, a group of Occupy protesters were participating in a demonstration outside the Supreme Court, Lyons noted in the papers. The focus of the protesters' ire: the high court's decision in Citizens United. Eleven people were arrested at the demonstration.

Courts in Washington, Lyons said today, have repeatedly concluded that the Supreme Court, with the exception of the sidewalks around the perimeter, is a nonpublic forum when it comes to the First Amendment. Dolan, according to the government, told Scott he was free to wear his jacket outside.

Dolan said in a declaration, filed today, that "any form of demonstration has the potential to disrupt individuals working at the court or to encroach upon the contemplative experience of visitors to the court." The court, Dolan said, "is careful to avoid any appearance that it might be approving or disapproving of any particular points of view."

Obama at elite Gridiron Club jokes about sequester, religion, the Pope, Biden, Rubio

Obama at elite Gridiron Club jokes about sequester, religion, the Pope, Biden, Rubio | Littlebytesnews Current Events | Scoop.it
President Obama, who dismayed the Beltway elite during his first term by famously shunning most of this town’s stuffed-shirt banquets, put in a game appearance at the annual Gridiron Club dinner Saturday night.

More:

It’s unclear what prompted Obama to accept his second invitation from the elite journalism fraternity since taking office. Last week saw him embark on a fence-mending charm offensive that included an intimate dinner with top GOP senators. He may also have wanted to make nice with journalists after the recent unpleasantness when he told the press corps he wasn’t doing anything interesting while he was actually golfing with Tiger Freakin’ Woods.

“Some of you have said that I’m ignoring the Washington press corps, that we’re too controlling,” he acknowledged at the dinner. “You know what, you’re right. I was wrong. I want to apologize – in a video you can watch exclusively atWhitehouse.gov.” Ba-dum-bump.

But then, even the journalists of the Gridiron have had a weirdly distant relationship with the rest of the press, keeping their dinner off-limits to reporters covering it. This year, the organization finally agreed to let a single pool reporter from the White House press corps sit in for the president’s remarks. The rest of the evening we non-members piece together from official transcripts, a glimpse of dress rehearsal and the dispatches from our leak-prone colleagues inside.

The dinner is best known for the hokey song skits put on by a cast of political journalists (plus a few golden-throated ringers), twisting popular tunes with current-event lyrics. Sort of like Senior Spirit Day at your old high school, but with better costumes.

For example: Clarence Page, the Pulitzer-winning columnist and surprisingly competent tune-carrier, portraying NRA President Wayne LaPierre, and singing, to the tune of  “My Girl”. . .

Nothing you could say could tear me away from my gun (my gun)

Amendment number two says there’s nothing you can do to my gun (my gun)

I’m clinging to my gun like a girl to a feller

Nothing could be sweller than D.C. versus Heller.

Get it? The landmark Supreme Court ruling that overturned D.C.’s handgun ban? No? Well, this probably wasn’t your kind of scene anyway. Perhaps you would have preferred the fairly obvious gag about the pope’s Twitter account (“Give me that online religion / It’s good enough for me”).

The Gridiron tradition is to invite a key Republican and Democrat to deliver their comic stylings — this year, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal (R) and Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn).

Jindal joked about his “disastrous” stint giving the Republican response to Obama’s 2009 State of the Union (“My dad called and said – ‘I told you to go to medical school’”) and about his own 2016 prospects:

“I mean, come on. What chance does a skinny guy with a dark complexion and a funny name have to get elected president of the United States?” Plenty more ethnic humor where that came from: “The president and I had the exact same campaign slogan years ago. But unfortunately UPS sued both of us and made us stop using it:  ‘What can brown do for you?’. . . When I first went to Congress, I would always get asked by friends, ‘Hey, have you met my friend Congressman So and So.’. . .  I don’t know, all white people look alike to me!”

Jindal kept up the shtick, shouting out to John Boehner (“we go to the same tanning salon”) and Elizabeth Warren (“from one Indian politician to another, I want to wish you all the best in your new job”) and Joe Biden (“I don’t think he recognized me. . . He asked me to go get him a Slurpee.”)

(Plus, a timely riff on Mark Sanford trying to hire his ex-wife as his campaign manager: “In Louisiana, if you try to get a woman back in your life by telling her you will pay her…that’s called solicitation.”)

Klobuchar picked up Jindal’s theme: “I know the governor and the president and I agree on one thing: One day soon, maybe not next year, maybe not in our children’s lifetime, but one day you will once again have a white male politician speak at the Gridiron.”

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/reliable-source/wp/2013/03/09/president-obama-at-elite-gridiron-club-jokes-about-sequester-biden-rubio

littlebytesnews's insight:

Some of the lame jokes Obama told include:

On “maintaining credibility” amid cynicism: “My administration recently put out a photo of me skeet shooting and even that wasn’t enough for some people.  Next week, we’re releasing a photo of me clinging to religion.”

Later he went on to joke about Biden being too young to be the next Pope:

Regarding Joe Biden’s future: “It’s no secret that my vice president is still ambitious. But let’s face it, his age is an issue. Just the other day, I had to take Joe aside and say, ‘Joe, you are way too young to be the pope.’ ”

There's nothing funny about Obama joking about religion and those who he undermines by saying Christians "cling to their religion and guns" during his past campaigns. He's made a mockery of the Presidency and Christianity...God will not be mocked! He's the biggest joke we've ever had for a President and with nearly 30% of the country out of work, less are laughing.
