It's not as if smoking isn't killing. I'm all for killing businesses that privatize profits while socializing losses/costs. In 2000 economists estimated the "real" cost of a pack so smokes to be $40.00. This price includes the cost to society in early death, fires, accidents (driving while lighting up), etc. Society picks up the cost of these externalities. Socialism at its worst.

Loughner's parents and friends watched a change they couldn't control

Loughner's parents and friends watched a change they couldn't control | Littlebytesnews Current Events | Scoop.it
The picture that is known so well to so many is of a stranger to those who knew Jared Loughner.

An interview by investigators with Anthony Kuck, who said that he knew Loughner since preschool, said, "I just know his personality is not normal," and, "(h)e's obviously got some problems.  He shaved his head."

Kuck even tried to get Loughner to change direction.

"I didn't really talk to him much," he told detectives.  "But, when I did, I was trying to give him positive.  But, obviously, he's, couldn't stop him.  He, uh, had some, I don't know what kind of grudge he would have against Gabrielle Giffords.  I don't even know if he knows politics about her."

Kuck told investigators he last saw Loughner about three weeks before the shooting, when Loughner brought the Glock with an extended clip to Kuck's house near the U of A.

"I kicked him out of the house because he showed me his gun," he said.  "I did not care to see that.  I did not want to know.  I didn't.  I was like, ‘why the hell do you have this?'  He's all 'protection'. "

Kuck did receive a brief voicemail from Loughner late one night before the shooting.  "But all he said, was, ‘hey, man, how you doing? What's up?' And that, I deleted it," Kuck said.

Someone who didn't delete his message was Bryce Tierney, who said that knew Loughner since middle school, and told investigators that Loughner "dropped out of contact with all my other friends, too, and he was just sort of getting, like a little, like, weird, like, in a dark way."

Tierney said Loughner would call from unknown numbers and act like he was someone else.  So, Tierney stopped answering.  And in the early morning hours before the shooting he received the voicemail:

"Hey.  It's, this is Jared.  Um, I had some very good times. And peace out.  Later."

By the time of the shooting, the Loughners knew their son had problems.  Just that morning his father tried unsuccessfully to confront Jared Loughner.

Amy Loughner described her son as a loner to investigators.  She said that he told his parents he tried cocaine and she knew that he used to drink but he said that he had not in five months.  She said they did a home drug test on him because, "My concern was like, meth or something.  Not knowing anything about meth.  But, because his behavior and his, was, um, odd.  I don't know."

She told investigators the test showed clean.  But over more than a year before the shooting she noticed him having conversations in his room as if someone was there.  She said that he was "just laughing or.  Uh, I don't know.  I didn't think.  I just thought it was odd."

Judge finds state terrorism statute constitutional against OWS Black Bloc group arrested at 2012 NATO summit

Judge finds state terrorism statute constitutional against OWS Black Bloc group arrested at 2012 NATO summit | Littlebytesnews Current Events | Scoop.it
A Cook County judge presiding over a criminal case stemming from last year’s NATO summit in Chicago ruled today that the state's terrorism law is constitutional.

Judge Thaddeus Wilson said the legislature enacted the anti-terrorism statute in the wake of the Sept. 11 attacks "due to the grave nature and global reach of terrorism." The law was on solid constitutional ground, he said.

Until Cook County prosecutors indicted Brian Church, Jared Chase and Brent Betterly with conspiracy to commit terrorism, the state terrorism statute had been used in only one previous prosecution in Illinois since being enacted a decade earlier.

Attorneys for the three argued the law’s definition of a terrorist act was so vague that it barred lawful conduct protected by the First Amendment such as labor protests or other acts of civil disobedience.

The law defines terrorism as “intent to intimidate or coerce a significant portion of a civilian population,” they wrote in a court filing seeking to dismiss the terrorism-related counts.

“The vague nature of the terms ‘coerce,’ ‘intimidate,’ and ‘significant portion of the civilian population’ allows for the arbitrary and discriminatory enforcement of the law,” the filing said.

Michael Deutsch, a lawyer for the People’s Law Office who represents Church, said the statute also allows police and prosecutors to “arbitrarily pick and choose” whom to charge with terrorism offenses.

Prosecutors have alleged the defendants are members of an anarchist group known as Black Bloc and intended to firebomb targets such as police stations, Mayor Rahm Emanuel's home and President Barack Obama's downtown re-election campaign headquarters last May.

Same-Sex Marriage Ten Years On: Lessons from Canada

Same-Sex Marriage Ten Years On: Lessons from Canada | Littlebytesnews Current Events | Scoop.it
The effects of same-sex civil marriage in Canada—restrictions on free speech rights, parental rights in education, and autonomy rights of religious institutions, along with a weakening of the marriage culture—provide lessons for the United States.

Would recognizing same-sex relationships as marriages be much of a game-changer? What impact, if any, would it have on the public conception of marriage or the state of a nation’s marriage culture?

There has been no shortage of speculation on these questions. But the limited American experience with same-sex marriage to date gives us few concrete answers. So it makes sense to consider the Canadian experience since the first Canadian court established same-sex marriage a decade ago. There are, of course, important cultural and institutional differences between the US and Canada and, as is the case in any polity, much depends upon the actions of local political and cultural actors. That is to say, it is not necessarily safe to assume that Canadian experiences will be replicated here. But they should be considered; the Canadian experience is the best available evidence of the short-term impact of same-sex marriage in a democratic society very much like America.

Anyone interested in assessing the impact of same-sex marriage on public life should investigate the outcomes in three spheres: first, human rights (including impacts on freedom of speech, parental rights in public education, and the autonomy of religious institutions); second, further developments in what sorts of relationships political society will be willing to recognize as a marriage (e.g., polygamy); and third, the social practice of marriage.

The Impact on Human Rights

The formal effect of the judicial decisions (and subsequent legislation) establishing same-sex civil marriage in Canada was simply that persons of the same-sex could now have the government recognize their relationships as marriages. But the legal and cultural effect was much broader. What transpired was the adoption of a new orthodoxy: that same-sex relationships are, in every way, the equivalent of traditional marriage, and that same-sex marriage must therefore be treated identically to traditional marriage in law and public life.

A corollary is that anyone who rejects the new orthodoxy must be acting on the basis of bigotry and animus toward gays and lesbians. Any statement of disagreement with same-sex civil marriage is thus considered a straightforward manifestation of hatred toward a minority sexual group. Any reasoned explanation (for example, those that were offered in legal arguments that same-sex marriage is incompatible with a conception of marriage that responds to the needs of the children of the marriage for stability, fidelity, and permanence—what is sometimes called the conjugal conception of marriage), is dismissed right away as mere pretext. 1

When one understands opposition to same-sex marriage as a manifestation of sheer bigotry and hatred, it becomes very hard to tolerate continued dissent. Thus it was in Canada that the terms of participation in public life changed very quickly. Civil marriage commissioners were the first to feel the hard edge of the new orthodoxy; several provinces refused to allow commissioners a right of conscience to refuse to preside over same-sex weddings, and demanded their resignations. 2 At the same time, religious organizations, such as the Knights of Columbus, were fined for refusing to rent their facilities for post-wedding celebrations. 3

The Right to Freedom of Expression

The new orthodoxy’s impact has not been limited to the relatively small number of persons at risk of being coerced into supporting or celebrating a same-sex marriage. The change has widely affected persons—including clergy—who wish to make public arguments about human sexuality.

Much speech that was permitted before same-sex marriage now carries risks. Many of those who have persisted in voicing their dissent have been subjected to investigations by human rights commissions and (in some cases) proceedings before human rights tribunals. Those who are poor, poorly educated, and without institutional affiliation have been particularly easy targets—anti-discrimination laws are not always applied evenly.  Some have been ordered to pay fines, make apologies, and undertake never to speak publicly on such matters again. 4 Targets have included individuals writing letters to the editors of local newspapers,5 and ministers of small congregations of Christians. 6 A Catholic bishop faced two complaints—both eventually withdrawn—prompted by comments he made in a pastoral letter about marriage. 7

Reviewing courts have begun to rein in the commissions and tribunals (particularly since some ill-advised proceedings against Mark Steyn and Maclean’s magazine in 2009), and restore a more capacious view of freedom of speech. And in response to the public outcry following the Steyn/Maclean’s affair, the Parliament of Canada recently revoked the Canadian Human Rights Commission’s statutory jurisdiction to pursue “hate speech.”

But the financial cost of fighting the human rights machine remains enormous—Maclean’s spent hundreds of thousands of dollars in legal fees, 8 none of which is recoverable from the commissions, tribunals, or complainants. And these cases can take up to a decade to resolve. An ordinary person with few resources who has drawn the attention of a human rights commission has no hope of appealing to the courts for relief; such a person can only accept the admonition of the commission, pay a (comparatively) small fine, and then observe the directive to remain forever silent. As long as these tools remain at the disposal of the commissions—for whom the new orthodoxy gives no theoretical basis to tolerate dissent—to engage in public discussion about same-sex marriage is to court ruin.

Similar pressure can be—and is—brought to bear on dissenters by professional governing bodies (such as bar associations, teachers’ colleges, and the like) that have statutory power to discipline members for conduct unbecoming of the profession. 9 Expressions of disagreement with the reasonableness of institutionalizing same-sex marriage are understood by these bodies to be acts of illegal discrimination, which are matters for professional censure.

Teachers are particularly at risk for disciplinary action, for even if they only make public statements criticizing same-sex marriage outside the classroom, they are still deemed to create a hostile environment for gay and lesbian students.10 Other workplaces and voluntary associations have adopted similar policies as a result of their having internalized this new orthodoxy that disagreement with same-sex marriage is illegal discrimination that must not be tolerated. 11

Parental Rights in Public Education

Institutionalizing same-sex marriage has subtly but pervasively changed parental rights in public education. The debate over how to cast same-sex marriage in the classroom is much like the debate over the place of sex education in schools, and of governmental pretensions to exercise primary authority over children. But sex education has always been a discrete matter, in the sense that by its nature it cannot permeate the entirety of the curriculum. Same-sex marriage is on a different footing.

Since one of the tenets of the new orthodoxy is that same-sex relationships deserve the same respect that we give marriage, its proponents have been remarkably successful in demanding that same-sex marriage be depicted positively in the classroom. Curriculum reforms in jurisdictions such as British Columbia now prevent parents from exercising their long-held veto power over contentious educational practices. 12

The new curricula are permeated by positive references to same-sex marriage, not just in one discipline but in all. Faced with this strategy of diffusion, the only parental defense is to remove one’s children from the public school system entirely. Courts have been unsympathetic to parental objections: if parents are clinging to outdated bigotries, then children must bear the burden of “cognitive dissonance”—they must absorb conflicting things from home and school while school tries to win out.

The reforms, of course, were not sold to the public as a matter of enforcing the new orthodoxy. Instead, the stated rationale was to prevent bullying; that is, to promote the acceptance of gay and lesbian youth and the children of same-sex households. 13

It is a laudable goal to encourage acceptance of persons. But whatever can be said for the objective, the means chosen to achieve it is a gross violation of the family. It is nothing less than the deliberate indoctrination of children (over the objections of their parents) into a conception of marriage that is fundamentally hostile to what the parents understand to be in their children’s best interests. It frustrates the ability of parents to lead their children to an understanding of marriage that will be conducive to their flourishing as adults. At a very early age, it teaches children that the underlying rationale of marriage is nothing other than the satisfaction of changeable adult desires for companionship.

Religious Institutions’ Right to Autonomy

At first glance, clergy and houses of worship appeared largely immune from coercion to condone or perform same-sex marriages. Indeed, this was the grand bargain of the same-sex marriage legislation—clergy would retain the right not to perform marriages that would violate their religious beliefs. Houses of worship could not be conscripted against the wishes of religious bodies. 14

I still say this whole argument is not about equality...because no matter what they get from us...they go after more... It's all about undermining our religious attachments because as long as our Judao/Christian bonds remain strong as with our country's foundation...then MArxism...Socialism...radical Islam...Sharia...these corruptions will not gain control of our society. But if we allow the Left to continue weakening and undermining our core religious beliefs...we will fall.... Every country in the world that has survived Communism or Marxism had to go through a period of destroying their religions...their faith in God had to be weakened and turned to a blind faith in government. That's how all tyrants achieved their goals and the Left is trying to achieve it here today....

littlebytesnews's insight:

I don't understand why he would tweet this when he wrote a great piece defending religious liberty at RedState.com earlier...I hope he's not "evolving" too here is an excerpt:

‘Gay Marriage’ and Religious Freedom Are Not Compatible

The kids these days on the right are full of a great libertarian notion that “hey, let’s just get the government out of marriage.”

“Rock on,” say other libertarians.

They then all smugly self-congratulate themselves, pat themselves on the back, and move on to other issues.

What they ignore is that the left will never take marriage out of the hands of the government. The left cannot. But it goes beyond that. The left cannot take marriage out of government because for so long it has been government through which marriages were legitimized to the public and the left must also use government to silence those, particularly the religious, who refuse to play along.

Let’s ignore, for the sake of this post, that the Democracy of the Dead has settled for us that in society marriage should be between a man and woman as the best way to propagate the species.

The left has done an admirable job in secular society making the case that gay marriage merely allows a class of people to be happy and have what everyone else has.

The front on which the gay rights movement has failed is the religious and, in particular in the United States, the Christian front.

From Matthew 19:4-6:

“Haven’t you read,” he replied, “that at the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female,’and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh’? So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”

The Christian Left would prefer to view Matthew 19 as a passage on divorce, which is discussed. But they willfully ignore Christ’s definition of what a marriage is — one man and one woman united to become one.

As much as many would ignore, obfuscate, or try to confuse the beginning of Matthew 19, Christ makes it very clear. The Creator made a male and a female and the two become one. That is marriage in Christianity, despite what a bunch of progressive Christians who have no use for the Bible would have the world believe.

Therein lies the problem for the gay rights movement.

As long as there are still Christians who actually follow Christ and uphold his word, a vast amount of people around the world — never mind Islam — will never ever see gay marriage as anything other than a legal encroachment of God’s intent.

It appears Erick Erickson's analysis is contradictory to what he wrote when he was defending marriage as a union between one man and one woman because it is a religious sacrament and liberty, not one the government grants.

The role of the SCOTUS[Supreme Court], federal government and the states should be to protect our Constitutional rights, not limit them or alter their meaning. Marriage is a religious right that must be protected under our first amendment. Religious liberty gives us the right to practice our faith, whatever faith that is or isn't, based on Church doctrine and teaching not based on what the government wants or believes.

The Constitution and Bill of Rights protect our religious liberties and those who choose not to practice a religion by limiting the federal government from establishing a religion or denying individuals the right to practice whatever faith or non-denomination they choose. The Constitution does not give the federal government, nor the states the right to redefine those beliefs and limit our beliefs. For example, when the Federal government tries to impose laws such as Obamacare on us, which requires businesses and individuals to purchase a product or pay a tax/fine/mandate if we don't purchase that product or service then our freedoms are being limited.

Additionally, when we are also being forced to purchase something we may not need nor agree with when it comes to providing abortion, contraceptives and other controversial services or products, then our religious liberties/rights are being imposed on. Our liberties as American citizens are not limited by government but should be protected by the government. The role of the government, the legislature and courts is to protect our unalieanable right to life, liberty [including religious liberties] and our pursuit of happiness which includes our right to prosper, own our own property and to defend ourselves and our property. These are unalieanable rights, which means they are not given to us by government or any man, but are given to us or endowed by our Creator. Without the right to life, liberty and the ability to pursue happiness and prosper or own property we would be slaves to the state and limited to what rights and freedoms they believe we should have.

Therefore, to redefine marriage, which is a religious sacrament and liberty is to trample on the religious rights and beliefs of millions of practicing Christians, Muslims, Jews and other religions who oppose homosexuality and same sex marriage and see them as an abomination to our Creator. Non-believers might call this bigotry, but it is bigotry for them to want to impose their beliefs on millions of people when there are only a few thousand homosexuals who support same sex marriage.

When the argument becomes clarified...we may get more accomplished. But as long as we are accused of being against gay marriage...such a generic and vague accusation...how can we find the common ground..? Conservatives draw the line at allowing government to decide what marriage is in such a way that they FORCE Religions to accept and perform ceremonies AGINST their doctrines...real simple. Seperation of Church and State does not work one way...it works both ways...which means that government CAN NOT tell or force a Church to perform gay marriages that are against the religious beliefs of that Church. PERIOD. Now...if you want to talk about defining marriage strictly by government standards...civil unions...whatever...fine...I support that. All the "rights" and "benefits" and "privileges" as befits a married couple IN THE EYES OF THE LAW...not the Church...Again...you can NOT force religions to accept and participate in that which goes against their doctrine...THAT is the entire basis of the first settlers leaving England for this new world...to get away from government running the Churches and forcing people to worship as the government ordered. We will not go back to that for a small minority of people who simply refuse to understand that basic premise....

One other point. I would be more respectful of this constant attack on religion if the same and equal effort was made to change Islam...but since it is NOT...then I must conclude these people have no real conviction to their cause...and it's simply a way to hurt Christianity...and our foundation under the Constitution...

littlebytesnews's insight:

Marriage is defined as a lifelong commitment between a man and a woman, it always has been and always should be defined as such. It should not be left to a court to redefine what marriage is in order to accommodate 1% of the population. In addition if they redefine marriage what other common practices and traditions will they redefine next??? This is something the courts should not be deciding. The people have already voted on this matter in CA and most other states, they don't want same sex marriage and do not support redefining what marriage between a man and a woman is about. Children deserve the right to have a father and a mother. Those who want to live together in sin and with someone of the same sex should find their own definition for homosexual relationships....which is homosexual fornication. It's not about producing children and raising a family because two men and two women can't procreate, but must adopt or find a surrogate or use IVF. It's not a natural relationship and threatens the traditional family and home environment for children.

The President claims he supports marriage and wants to give children stable families, with two parents, but he doesn't understand nor care about the statistics on what a safe and stable environment for children is about. No family is perfect, but the natural family guarantees the most successful outcome for children and studies have proven this to be true. Sadly too many think allowing same sex couples to marry gives them equality, but equality is not about allowing people of the same sex to live the lifestyle of a heterosexual couple but recognizing that marriage is between a man and a woman and that everyone has an equal right to marry a man and a woman of the opposite sex.

Perhaps the only way to stop the push for marriage by homosexuals is to reform the tax laws and instill a flat tax, that way everyone pays an equal share regardless of marital status. As for benefits, etc, living wills and powers of attorney should allow for transfer of ownership and medical decisions of same sex couples. If we allow courts to redefine marriage it will take the power away from private individuals and organizations to make religious decisions and will infringe on their religious liberty.

Autopsy shows adopted Russian child suffered repeated bruises before death

Autopsy shows adopted Russian child suffered repeated bruises before death | Littlebytesnews Current Events | Scoop.it
The autopsy report of a three-year-old Russian boy adopted by a Texan couple concludes that the child had more than 30 bruises on his body as well as other signs that he was routinely injured.

The medical document released to the Odessa American suggests that the foster family, who have also adopted the victim’s brother, were struggling to provide proper care for Maksim Shatto but examiners believe that the injuries were due to self-injury stemming from a serious mental condition.

The medical examiner found abrasions, scrapes and bruises on the boy’s body.

Max’s adoptive father has said that the boy was constantly hitting his head at home and had serious behavioural issues.

The anti-psychotic drug Risperidone was prescribed to the boy, but the boy stopped taking the medication four days after the parents read about the side effects.

The mother had previously told the authorities that Maksim used to claw himself, which she tried to prevent by cutting his nails short and having him wear gloves at night.

The boy, born Maksim Kuzmin, died January 21 after his adoptive mother Laura Shatto found him unresponsive outside their home in Gardendale, Texas.

Last week US prosecutors said that no charges would be made in the case due to lack of evidence.

Victims of Government: Steve's Story

littlebytesnews's insight:

While this video discusses the regulatory burdens the Federal Government places on individual property owners and businesses, another group of people are also victims of the government:

American Indians are victims of the federal government. They are impoverished, lack quality health care, lack quality education and growth opportunities and many are addicted to alcohol. Learn more about the plight and suffering of American Indians and their children by checking out @KidsDyingOnRez's timeline timeline on the Indian Child Welfare Act.

Other victims of the federal government are those slaughtered each day because of legalized abortion. At least 3,000 human beings are dismembered in their mother's wombs each day in the US.

How many more families and lives have to suffer because of government regulations and laws that deny individuals their rights to life, liberty and property??

Deputies: Armed man holed up in Tacoma home;after shooting randomly at homes in the neighborhood

Deputies: Armed man holed up in Tacoma home;after shooting randomly at homes in the neighborhood | Littlebytesnews Current Events | Scoop.it
Police in Tacoma are warning residents in the Fife Heights area to stay inside after receiving reports of an armed man walking through the neighborhood and indiscriminately firing at homes.

The Pierce County sheriff's department put out a warning at 4 p.m. after receiving 911 calls about an armed man in the 5800 block of 13th Street Ct. NE.

Callers claimed he was shooting at homes.

"The gunman is not in custody and is moving through the neighborhood. This is a very dangerous situation for your staff, citizens in the area, and first responders," the alert read.

Moments after the 911 calls were made, a cadre of police and sheriff's deputies swarmed the area and began a door-to-door search for the gunman.

At 4:30 p.m., deputies announced they had located the man inside his own home. The man, who is refusing to come out, is believed to be heavily armed with high-powered weapons, according to Pierce County sheriff's spokesman Ed Troyer.

littlebytesnews's insight:

Hopefully it ends peacefully and nobody is harmed or injured. It doesn't sound like he shot at anyone or killed anyone at this time. Hopefully things stay that way and he is taken into custody, but if anyone goes down hopefully it's him rather than the police.

What Makes Teenagers Shoot a Baby in the Head? Was it the guns fault??Or the user?

What Makes Teenagers Shoot a Baby in the Head? Was it the guns fault??Or the user? | Littlebytesnews Current Events | Scoop.it

Sherry West, 41, of Brunswick, Georgia, was pushing her year old son Antonio in his stroller down the sidewalk.  She was approached by two black teenagers,

, one of which was armed with a gun and demanded her money.  West told the teens that she had no money, so the teen with the gun told her that if she didn’t hand over her money, he would shoot her baby in the head.  She said she thought the gun was fake and again insisted she had no money, the teen turned, and shot Antonio in the head.  In the ensuing melee, Sherry was shot once in the leg and another bullet grazed her ear.

A passerby called 9-1-1 as Sherry pulled her son out of the stroller and tried to give mouth-to-mouth resuscitation to save his young life, but her efforts were in vain.  Police offered a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the perpetrators.  They received leads through various hotlines and phone calls.  Following up on those leads, they arrested 17 year old Demarquis Elkins and an unnamed 14 year old.  Elkins can be tried as an adult under Georgia law.

Sherry says the motive was robbery, yet many people have been asking why something like this could happen.  What would cause teenagers to commit such a horrendous act of shooting a year old boy in the head?  In all of the reports I’ve read, no one has been able to offer up any reason for the actions and that only shows just how far from God and the Bible our nation has strayed.

In Genesis 3, we read where Adam chose to disobey God, committing the first sin in history.  That sin brought suffering, disease and death into the world (Rom. 8:22).  Adams sin corrupted all of creation including his own offspring.  In Genesis 4 we read where Adam and Eve’s first born son was jealous of his younger brother Abel and ended up killing him, the first murder.  In Genesis 6:5, we read:

“The LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.”

Since we are all descendants of Adam and Eve, we all are born sinners with wicked hearts and thoughts.  Our sinful nature and wicked hearts are what leads to us committing such violent and obscene acts like shooting an infant in the head or gunning down a classroom of kids.  It’s what leads to stealing, lying, cheating, lusting, sexual perversion, homosexuality, pornography and war.

It’s not God’s fault, it’s man’s fault.  We’re filthy sinners, blackened by the vileness of our thoughts and deeds.  As such, our only guarantee in life is to spend eternity in Hell because of our sins.  According to Scripture, just one sin in a lifetime is enough to separate us from God in this life and throughout eternity.  No one is capable of living a perfect sinless life, meaning that every person in history is condemned to Hell.

littlebytesnews's insight:

Criminals break laws, evil kills. Criminals are evil. Whether you believe in a religion or not, everyone knows there is good and evil in the world. Those who choose to do good and those who choose to do evil. When you make choices that lead to evil such as these boys did, they are not only criminal but evil.

For this reason, you can't legislate morality and make more laws to stop crimes. People who are evil commit crimes and they will break laws.

littlebytesnews's comment, April 6, 2013 6:03 PM
@David40 what are you saying? You think you are going to stop criminals by banning guns from law abiding citizens?? Criminals break laws, you can have millions of laws...murder is already illegal, but do criminals care?? NO
David's comment, April 6, 2013 7:22 PM
II never said that, nor implied that. I said if we do nothing, the problem escalates. Doing nothing is not an option. Not every person with a gun is a criminal and most mass shootings are not done by people with a criminal history. It's a situation that goes deeper in our society than just guns. For one thing, studies show that the greater the income gap in a society the greater the violence. This is a problem with the whole of our society and we need holistic remedies. However, thinking they're coming for your guns or that any regulation is bad regulation will get us absolutely no where. We have to do right now what statistically works, whether in San Francisco or Sydney, Australia. Again, doing nothing will just increase the violence.
Tom Hauck's comment, April 6, 2013 7:53 PM
If we're back to what STATISTICALLY works...then regulating is NOT the answer. Statistically...every state that de-regulated gun laws...or opened up to concealed-carry laws ALL saw a reduction in violent crime. STATISTICALLY...gun crimes are occurring in gun-free zones...regulate or ban guns and crimes increase in that area. Staistically there are 4 times as many people SAVED by guns each years than harmed. Meaning that 2 MILLIONS acts of violence are stopped by legal gun owners showing or using their legal guns. And in 99% of these cases...NO SHOOTING OF THE CRIMINAL by the legal gun owner...just pulling it stopped a crime. These are FBI stats that the media refuse to report. Our society blames everyone and everything EXCEPT the criminal..which was MY point... We have people who fight tooth and nail to keep criminals out of jail...or who have been convicted of murder off death row...then we attack those of us who believe in our right to carry and protect ourselves from evil in any form...and that includes a tyrannical government which we are witnessing more and more these days....Bottom line is we need to hold PEOPLE accountable to events...people consciously make the choices whose outcomes are witnessed and dealt with based on an emotional response...not a factual or reasonable one....and there's our problem....

Anonymous tip led to arrests in case of murdered baby Antonio West

Anonymous tip led to arrests in case of murdered baby Antonio West | Littlebytesnews Current Events | Scoop.it
Police in Georgia say an anonymous tip helped them make arrests in the shooting death of baby who was killed in a stroller.
littlebytesnews's insight:

Thank God someone knew who was responsible for this heinous crime and the mother's description of the suspects led to their arrest. Such a handsome little baby was taken too soon and for no sensible reason. Even if she would have had money on her I doubt it would have been more than a few bucks...even if she had a million dollars on her, nobody's life should be taken because of another's greed.

I heard the mother also lost an 18year old son a few years ago to a stabbing. Unfortunately he chose his destination by showing up with a knife, along with others, to gang up on someone they had lured to meet them and had planned to attack. During the fight her son was stabbed and died of his wounds.

But, to lose a second son and an innocent baby in such a horrific and violent crime has to be horrific. I can't imagine what the mother is going through. She has said she will likely never have kids again, especially after this incident. I don't blame her, with her experiences and the suffering she must be feeling this world is becoming too violent, too Godless to raise children. I only hope and pray we are able to keep our sons safe and from harm each day as we try to instill morals and values in them.

RIP Sweet Baby Antonio. You are whole again and will live forever with our Heavenly father.
