Would you rather your child attend a school with armed security or unarmed protection??Let the parents decide! | Littlebytesnews Current Events | Scoop.it
Parents of children who survived the deadly massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School speak to CBS News about NRA head's call for armed security guards in every U.S. school

NRA Chief Executive Wayne LaPierre rejected calls for more gun restrictions, and instead stated that "gun-free" zones made schools less safe by inviting criminals with guns into unprotected areas.LaPierre insisted, "The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun."He called for the presence of armed guards in every school across the U.S. "We need to have every single school in America immediately deploy a protect program proven to work, and by that I mean armed security," LaPierre said.LaPierre went on to add, "When it comes to our most beloved innocent and vulnerable members of the American family -- our children -- we as a society leave them every day utterly defenseless."

Lapierre's comments also drew quick reaction from politicians, many of them sharply criticizing the gun lobby's response.

But the reaction to the NRA's public stance was more tempered in Newtown, Conn., as parents grapple with finding a resolution that will protect their children at school.

"There are some people I am sure who will say, 'Let's put more policemen in our schools, or bullet-proof doors or windows in our schools," Andrei Nikitchyuk, the father of a third grader who survived the Sandy Hook school shooting, told CBS News' Elaine Quijano. "What I could tell them would be, 'Do you really [want] to have a shootout in our schools like the OK-Corral, in our schools?'"

But another Sandy Hook parent says the NRA's rallying cry for such school security measures is a step in the right direction.

"We are a nation of strong opinions and strong beliefs," said Desiree Vaiuso, whose daughter survived the shooting. "And some of us are changing our minds."

littlebytesnews's insight:

As a parent of two young sons, I'd rather send mine where there is armed security along with strict rules for allowing entry to the premises. If the presidents children and celebrity children and other wealthy children are able to send their kids to secure schools our children deserve equal protection. Our children aren't worth less or less important, they are our future and should be equally protected.

Since the Newtown shooting, membership in the NRA has gone up as well a sells of guns and ammunition for self protection indicating many Americans are concerned about Obamas emotional reaction to regulate weapons. People want the right to defend themselves and their families, and gun control laws have failed everywhere they've been tried. Connecticut already has strict gun laws, but Adam Lanza stole his mother's weapons when he was denied the right to buy his own because he refused a background check. Therefore proving criminals and the mentally unstable will find other ways to obtain guns legal or not.

Laws do not stop criminals and crime, only a "good guy with a gun". When seconds count we can't be expected to wait for police to arrive. Most police arrive after a crime has been committed, therefore we must have the right to defend and protect ourselves and families with the same force our police would use. In addition the second amendment was designed to protect us not only from criminals but a tyrannical government. We have the right to bear arms equivalent to police because our founders believed in the people creating their own militia to fight against tyranny.

In the end,I believe more parents would rather their child have the best protection and security available and one way to do this is to provide trained armed security who can be volunteer parents or NRA members, retired law enforcement or ex military or they can be paid. One way to fund training and security is to use teacher's union dues. The NRA has over 11,000 certified police instructors who are available to provide training.  It's time to consider common sense security in our schools. As the NRA leader said,  we protect presidents, money and buildings with armed security why not our precious, irreplaceable and one of a kind children?

I think as parents, we should have the right to decide whether our schools are protected by armed security or not and states need to have the right to make these decisions along with school boards, PTA's and the parents themselves. The federal government needs to stay out of it and let parents have a voice and a choice in these decisions. Those parents who don't want armed protection for their children can send their kids to such schools and those who would feel better about having their child in a school with armed protection should have the choice to send their children to those schools.

When it comes to school safety and security parents should have more of a voice and a choice in these decisions, not the federal government. I bet more parents would choose the armed/secure schools over the unarmed schools. Which would you choose and why?? California boy, 12, admits hanging his small dog ‘to see it die’: cops  | Littlebytesnews Current Events | Scoop.it
A 12-year-old California boy allegedly hanged his small dog on a door handle to "see it die" in a disturbing case of animal cruelty, police said.

"I was mad at the dog, so I killed it," the unidentified juvenile casually told investigators after the Friday incident in Salinas, Calif., cops said.

"I wanted to see it die," the boy purportedly boasted.

Police found the canine corpse after he boy's 19-year-old sister called 911 and blurted out, "He's hurting the dog," before the dispatcher heard a struggle and the line hung up, a Salinas Police spokesman told the Daily News.

"She was trying to intervene, and he battered her," Officer Miguel Cabrera told The News. "So she left the apartment with a second dog, trying to protect it."

A building manager helped them gain entry with a pass key, and officers found the motionless 12-pound terrier mix hanging by its collar from a bedroom door handle, police said.

The 12-year-old boy came out of the same bedroom and "spontaneously" admitted his role in the heinous act, Cabrera said.

The sister returned a short time later and also told officers the boy took the dog's life, Cabrera told The News.

He said it's not clear what sparked the boy's rage.

littlebytesnews's insight:

A kid like this has anger issues and is potentially a sociopath. He doesn't know how to control his anger but also showed no signs of empathy and concern for his older sister. He is violent and out of control and mentally unstable. I don't think he sounds like someone who should be living in the home and he definitely needs some sort of institutionalization. I wonder what became of him...since this was reported in October.

Many serial killers start out by abusing animals...this is not a good sign for this kid.Inability to control anger&rage, as well as jealousy and/or anti-social behavior all seem to be common denominators in the mind of these shooters. But they also appear to lack empathy for their victims and seem detached from reality and unable to connect with others emotionally.

i think that the police should take this boy to a counselor and try to get him to work on his anger issues because if he can hurt an innocent dog that made him angry then he could also do the same to a human being.

"Smart guns" Personalize Your Weapon To Keep Anyone Else From Firing It... show promise, but not readily available on U.S. market

"Smart guns" Personalize Your Weapon To Keep Anyone Else From Firing It... show promise, but not readily available on U.S. market | Littlebytesnews Current Events | Scoop.it

(Reuters) - When Irish gun entrepreneur Robert McNamara learned of the Sandy Hook Elementary School mass shooting, his immediate reaction, like that of most people, was one of horror, shock and sadness. But there was something else, too.

"I was literally pulling my hair out," McNamara said. "I thought, we have a technology that could have helped prevent that massacre."

That technology places a radio chip in a gun handle and a corresponding chip on a ring or bracelet or even implanted in an authorized shooter's hand, McNamara said. If the two chips are not within an inch or two of each other, the trigger will not unlock.

The concept, which McNamara's company, TriggerSmart, patented this spring, is a fresh take on a smart gun technology that has been studied and promoted for two decades but has been stubbornly stuck at the prototype phase.

"If the reports were accurate and they were mom's guns, and had she not given him access to whatever personalized the guns, then her son doesn't have access to these guns. He isn't able to operate them," said Jon Vernick, co-director of the John Hopkins Center for Gun Policy. "That's the essence of what a personalized gun is about."

In 1992, a group of students at Johns Hopkins University in Maryland carried out an assignment to rig a gun to fire only when held by its rightful owner. It cost them little more than $2,000.

In the two decades since, the U.S. government has spent millions of dollars on grants for research institutions and gun makers to perfect a personalized gun ― mostly on biometric methods such as fingerprint and grip recognition.

New Jersey passed a law in 2002 mandating that once such a gun becomes commercially available, all guns sold in the state must incorporate the technology within three years.

While champions of personalized guns have long insisted that the technology is within reach, no such gun has made it to the mainstream U.S. market.

One product that is available now is a pair of after-market magnetized add-ons that prevents certain guns from firing unless the shooter is wearing a magnetic ring.

By contrast, the radio frequency identification technology proposed by McNamara, implanted in everything from key cards to house pets, is essentially instantaneous and virtually fail-safe, according to RFID Journal founding editor Mark Roberti.

"These systems are very reliable," said Roberti, adding his car has never failed to start as a result of a fault in chips now standard in car keys.

An important question for TriggerSmart, Roberti says, is how quickly the trigger lock disengages after the shooter has been verified, determining how fast a gun can be fired in a life-or-death situation.

Gun Owners of America spokesman Erich Pratt said it opposed any effort to mandate the use of personalized guns. Doing so, he said, would impose the use of a technology that is not assured.

"I've got 12 kids. I don't want them getting into guns when they're not supposed to," Pratt said. "But I don't want in a moment of crisis to have a question that my gun might not work to protect my family."

McNamara said he has spoken with some U.S. gun makers, which he did not name, about licensing his technology. He said they were reluctant to be the first to move ahead with personalized guns.

"The attitude is, ‘We understand this technology is coming down the track and we'll deal with it when we have to,'" he said. "They're concerned about the liability aspect. When you put it in one gun you'll have to put it in every gun."

littlebytesnews's insight:

Now this is the kind of technology that makes sense in defeating gun violence by unauthorized users, not more laws. This is the ultimate safety device....perhaps besides a chip they could use some sort of finger print scanner or retina scanner to allow the gun to fire. This would help assure kids or thieves are unable to use the gun, as in the case of Adam Lanza. However, gun users are concerned about the technology failing when they need the weapon in a life or death situation.

Ohio governor signs law slightly weakening gun controls

Ohio governor signs law slightly weakening gun controls | Littlebytesnews Current Events | Scoop.it
COLUMBUS, Ohio (Reuters) - Ohio's Republican Governor Johns Kasich on Thursday signed into law a measure that would slightly weaken the state's law on carrying concealed weapons, less than a week after a Connecticut school massacre focused national...

The bill would require Ohio residents demonstrate competency with the weapon only once rather than each time the concealed carry permit expires. It also would allow carrying concealed weapons in the parking garage of the State Capitol.

Kasich signed the bill along with 41 others and did not hold a signing ceremony. A press release summarizing his actions put the gun law near the bottom of list of those signed.

Kasich foreshadowed the action earlier in the week, telling reporters he would sign it: "Whatever we do, we don't want to erode the Second Amendment rights of law abiding citizens."

The Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution gives American citizens the right to bear arms.

NEWTOWN, Conn. -- The gunman who killed 20 elementary school students in their classrooms had once attended the same school, according to a school administrator and a former classmate.

Superintendent Janet Robinson said Adam Lanza attended Sandy Hook elementary, although she could not remember the year.

"I know that he was a student at Sandy Hook at some point," she said.

Investigators have said nothing about a possible motive or why Lanza targeted the school.

Relatives have denied that Lanza attended the school. But at least one former classmate said that he apparently attended the school in fifth grade in fall 2002.

Lanza, 20, killed 20 children and six adults and wounded two others at the school Friday morning. Earlier, he had shot and killed his mother at their home. He fatally shot himself after the attacks.

The signatures of Lanza and his fifth-grade classmates are on a Sandy Hook Elementary T-shirt made by the school and given to each student. Lanza and other fifth graders attended the school in fall 2002.

The Sandy Hook School T-shirt says "2003," but Lanza and his classmates actually left Sandy Hook at the end of 2002. In January 2003, they moved to newly built Reed Intermediate School for fifth- and sixth-graders.

Lanza was home-schooled for some of his education, family members have said.

Fifth-grade classmate Dan Lynch, now a junior at the University of Connecticut, remembers Lanza at Sandy Hook Elementary.

"I was in class with him in fifth grade, and he was extremely introverted," Lynch says. "He was really skittish, always anxious and nervous."

The Mind of a School Shooter--Not All Are Crazy,Most Are Just Angry

From Topher Payne's "Above the Fold": The introduction to the story of a high school shooting in Pearl, Mississippi. Featuring Greg Morris as Luke Woodham.

Pearl High School Shooting

The incident began on the morning of October 1, 1997 when Luke Woodham fatally stabbed and bludgeoned his mother, Mary Woodham, as she prepared for a morning jog. At his trial, Woodham claimed that he could not remember killing his mother.

Woodham drove his mother's car to Pearl High School. Wearing an orange jumpsuit and a trenchcoat,[1] he made no attempt to hide his rifle. When he entered the school, he fatally shot Lydia Kaye Dew and Christina Menefee, his former girlfriend. Pearl High School assistant band director, Jeff Cannon, was standing five feet away from Dew when she was fatally shot. Woodham went on to wound seven others before leaving, intending to drive off campus and conduct another shooting at the nearby Pearl Junior High School. However, assistant principal Joel Myrick had retrieved a .45 pistol from the glove compartment of his truck and subdued Woodham inside his mother's car. Then Myrick demanded
"Why did you shoot my kids?" to which Woodham replied, "Life has wronged me, sir."[2]

Minutes before he started the shooting, he gave the following message to a friend[3]:
“ I am not insane, I am angry. I killed because people like me are mistreated every day. I did this to show society, push us and we will push back. ... All throughout my life, I was ridiculed, always beaten, always hated. Can you, society, truly blame me for what I do? Yes, you will. ... It was not a cry for attention, it was not a cry for help. It was a scream in sheer agony saying that if you can't pry your eyes open, if I can't do it through pacifism, if I can't show you through the displaying of intelligence, then I will do it with a bullet. ”

littlebytesnews's insight:

While Adam Lanza was angry, he was also mentally ill from the news reports I have heard recently. A man claiming to be his uncle said Lanza was taking an anti-psychotic called Fanapt, which is prescribed for schizophrenia. It hasn't been confirmed if this is true or not, but no medications were found in the house where Lanza resided with his mother. Court records are currently sealed so until they are subpoened by law enforcement we will not know for sure whether his mom was filing to have him committed, as a family friend reported to Fox News recently, which may have set Lanza off. It is believed he felt abandoned by the fact his mother was going to give up on him and have him committed for a psychiatric evaluation and treatment, and that she had volunteered at Sandy Hook last year with the First Grade students he shot and killed.

It's obvious he planned out his shooting spree, like Woodham, Loughner, Holmes and most other mass shooters. They all were well armed and prepared to take gun fire from law enforcement. However, all were cowards who targeted helpless students and teachers and people in "Gun Free Zones". The majority of mass shootings have been in these "Gun Free Zones'', which indicates laws banning guns doesn't work when someone is determined to commit a crime they are already breaking the law by their intent to do harm and premeditating the crime, then acting it out. Adam Lanza tried to purchase weapons, but was turned down when he refused a background check and didn't want to wait for the waiting period. Those laws are already in place, and can be a deterrent, but as this case proves someone who is determined to harm others will take desperate measures and steal the weapons needed if they need to. That's just what Adam Lanza did.

Unfortunately his mother taught him to use guns and kept them in the house while living with a child she knew was mentally unstable and immature. She is said to have told friends she didn't like to leave him alone, one friend said he was told not to turn his back on Adam for a second because she feared what he would do. It's not known if she thought he would harm others or himself, but it definitely sounds like she knew he was unstable and could harm himself and is reported to have set himself on fire and claimed he felt no pain. He was a reserved, recluse, who avoided social interaction with others throughout high school years and was known to have outbursts and temper tantrums, but was considered intelligent, with a high functioning form of autism, aspergers. His mother later pulled him out of school because his needs were unmanageable and she apparently thought her love, time and devotion were enough to keep him on track. Apparently she was wrong. Her desperation to bond with her emotional son, who lacked affection towards her, led her to teach him target shooting as a way for her to bond with her youngest son. Sadly, little did she know she was training him to take her life, his own and others.

While there are no reports Lanza was bullied or teased growing up, Luke Woodham said he was bullied, beaten, teased and hated while growing up. He was angry and wanted vengeance for the way he had been treated, so he planned to kill his ex girfriend,a friend and three others before he was stopped by his principal who was armed. The thing that was common between Woodham and Lanza is they both had a sense of anger towards those who they felt wronged them.

The killings at Sandy Hook appeared to have a personal rage, while he didn't know the children and teachers personally, he knew that his mother knew them and worked with them as a volunteer last year and he felt her time spent with them took from her time with him and her love for him. At least, according to recent reports, and once he found out his mom was going to have him committed and sent away, the only person who was always there for him was turning on him...at least in his mind he thought she betrayed him.

His mom had done all she could for so many years, but it was getting to the point there was nothing else she could do as she felt she was 'losing him'. Sadly, the anger and rage he felt caused him to act irrationally and led him to take that rage out on her and the 26 other people she was close to.

Another common denominator is most of these mass murderers are intelligent and not just mentally disturbed. They are smart enough to know what they are doing and plan out these attacks from the start to finish. They also often end up taking their own lives. However, James Holmes and Jared Loughner did not take their lives and based on what we know about them they both likely suffered from schizophrenia, which could have been a likely factor in the case of Adam Lanza. I'm not sure why they didn't take their lives, but Adam Lanza did and now we may never really know the exact reason he did what he did, but based on the pieces of his life we know...he was a very troubled and disturbed person that needed much more than the love and attention his mom provided.

Intelligent,Rage,Jealousy and Social Inadequacies all seem to be a common factor in the shooter at Sandy Hook and other mass murderers. Does it mean all angry, jealous, intelligent people who keep to themselves are going to become mass killers...no, but it should raise red flags that these people need to be paid attention to, referred for counseling or treatment until they appear able to manage their rage and interact with those around them so that they can function productively in society. If not, then they might have a deeper problem which requires greater evaluation and treatment.

'I am the devil': Former classmate reveals school gunman had 'online devil worshiping page' as childhood barber recounts how he never spoke and just stared at floorsMedical examiner enlists help of geneticist to see if there is a biological reason behind massacreNewtown resident raises possibility that Adam Lanza, 20, was angry and may have snapped over mother's possible plans to commit himNancy Lanza, 52, was shot to death in her own bed by her son before the Sandy Hook killingsLanza killed 20 children and six adults in the school before killing himself as police closed in

Lanza's worshiping page had the word 'Devil' written in red, Gothic-style letters against a black background, Trevor L. Todd said, something which he said was 'weird' and 'gave him the chills'.

The Sandy Hook gunman worshiped the devil and had an online page dedicated to Satan, a former classmate revealed, as his childhood barber recalls Adam Lanza never spoke and would stare at the floor every time he had his hair cut.

A friend told the New York Post that Nancy was overwhelmed.

'It was really hard for her as a single mother. It’s hard enough raising an autistic child, just me and my wife. I couldn’t imagine doing it alone,' said Rich Collins, 54, a Lanza family friend who has an autistic son, Jeffrey, 17.

'I think it’s important to get the part of the story out — that an unmarried woman was trying to raise an autistic child on her own. I think she needed more support.'

Fox News quotes a neighborhood figure, whose father works as the pastor of an area church, as saying that the 20-year-old shooter found out that his mother was in the legal process of having him committed and was upset.

That news, coupled with his jealousy of the time she allegedly spent with a group of kindergarteners at Sandy Hook, is thought to have served as the basis of the killing.

A number of factors are still unconfirmed in the theory, and it appears that they may remain as such for some time.

Records of conservatorship filings, which Nancy Lanza would have needed to make in order to commit her son since he is over 18-years-old, are sealed by the courts so if any such filings were made they will not be released publicly.

'Adam Lanza believed she cared more for the children than she did for him, and the reason he probably thought this (was the fact that) she was petitioning for conservatorship and wanted to have him committed,' Joshua Flashman told Fox News.

Targeted: All but one of the students in this first grade class were killed by gunman Adam Lanza, prompting the theory that he chose them because his mother worked with that group as a volunteer

As a teenager, Adam Lanza would come in for a haircut about every six weeks without speaking or looking at anyone and always accompanied by his mother, said stylists at a Newtown salon.

He stopped coming in a few years ago, and the employees at the salon thought he had moved away, said stylist Bob Skuba.

Adam in the chair: Hairstylist Diane Harty said Adam was difficult to deal with.

'It’s just weird that I actually touched him. I'd tried to joke with him,' Skuba said. 'He wouldn’t even look at me. He would just be looking down at the tiles the whole time.

'I wish I would have killed him then. Or he should have killed himself a long time ago. He would have saved us all the trouble.

'I should have slit and stabbed him by accident. It would have been a lot better for those people.'

Cutting Adam Lanza’s hair 'was a very long half an hour. It was a very uncomfortable situation', stylist Diane Harty said.

She said that she never heard his voice even once and that Nancy, a divorcee, also hardly spoke - only to tell Adam what to do as he would not listen to anyone else.

The comments from him and his colleagues were among the first describing how the Lanzas interacted with each other. Investigators have found no letters or diaries that could explain the attack, one of the deadliest mass shootings in U.S. history.

Cutting Adam Lanza's hair 'was a very long half an hour. It was a very uncomfortable situation,' stylist Diane Harty said. She said that she never heard his voice and that Nancy Lanza also hardly spoke.

Another stylist, Jessica Phillips, echoed their descriptions of the Lanzas and added that Nancy Lanza would give her son directions about what to do and where to go.

Adam would move only 'when his mother told him to,' Skuba said.

'I would say, "Adam, come on." He wouldn't move,' Skuba said.

'And his mother would have to say, "Adam, come on, he's ready." It was like I was invisible.'

littlebytesnews's insight:

He was definitely a very disturbed individual based on the first hand accounts of those who knew him and his mother. Someone should have encouraged her to get professional help sooner. He needed 24 hour supervision and treatment in an institution not at home and he definitely should have never been around guns nor trained how to use them considering he would act out and was known to be unstable. I hope laws are passed to stop people from owning such weapons if they live with someone who is unstable. I also hope more people take their children's behavior problems and social issues more seriously and get them the help they need sooner rather than later. You can't be expected to deal with all of these issues on your own, especially when they are posing a danger to themself or others. She didn't like to leave him alone and even had a babysitter for him in his teens! This is not normal behavior...sadly the mother's love and time was not enough to cure a mental illness...he needed institutionalization to keep him away from the public.

Pittsburgh:Butler school districts get OK to arm guards

Pittsburgh:Butler school districts get OK to arm guards | Littlebytesnews Current Events | Scoop.it
At least two Pittsburgh area school districts got special permission on Sunday to arm their security officers when classes resume on Monday, the first school

“We want to have at least one armed officer at each of our schools, starting tomorrow and every day thereafter,” said Butler Area School District Superintendant Michael Strutt. “It was our intent to do this anyway; (the Newtown shooting) caused us to think about it and work over the weekend to expedite that process.”
Butler County President Judge Thomas Doerr gave the Butler Area and South Butler school districts special permission on Sunday to have their qualified school police officers — all Pennsylvania State Police retirees — carry their personal service weapons in school buildings.
Other districts throughout the region reached out to reassure parents via letters and emails that their children would be safe, reiterating security procedures and offering counseling for students shocked by Friday‘s slayings.
The Butler Area school board voted 8-1 on Dec. 10 to move toward arming the district‘s officers within a few months as the district purchased weapons for them and set policies for officers to follow. But the fear of copycat crimes after the Newtown shootings spurred Butler Area schools to seek a special order from Doerr to allow armed guards at all 14 of its school buildings as soon as classes resumed on Monday, Strutt said.
Most officers in Butler and South Butler were still qualified to carry their weapons on-duty and needed the judge‘s permission to take them onto school property; those whose qualifications had expired met on Sunday afternoon with the firearms trainer from the Butler County Sheriff‘s Office to get recertified, said attorney Tom King, who is solicitor for both districts. Parents in the districts will be notified of the change via automated calls and text messages, he said.
Butler is not alone in employing armed guards; 118 of Pennsylvania‘s 498 school districts use them, along with 14 alternative education institutions, according to the State Department of Education.
Pittsburgh School Police do not carry weapons but work closely with city police.
Bethel Park School District has a combination of unarmed guards in its high school, one armed school police officer who is paid by the district upon retiring from the municipal police department, and one armed school resource officer who is paid by the district and the municipality, said district spokeswoman Vicki Flotta.

littlebytesnews's insight:

This is what I think needs to happen across the country and the way to staff these security personnel is by using Teacher's Union Funds to pay off duty police, as Michael Savage has suggested or they could train and hire NRA members as armed security in schools??

It has been reported teachers in Israel are armed with guns as well, however after further looking into it not all teachers in Israel are armed, only those who work in the West Bank according to Jewish Virtual Library.

I think the solution is to be prepared with security measures in place, but self defense is always the best protection.

EXCLUSIVE: Fear of being committed may have caused Connecticut gunman to snap | Littlebytesnews Current Events | Scoop.it
Adam Lanza killed his mother and 26 other because “his mother was in the process of trying to get him committed to the psych hospital,” said a Marine from Sandy Hook close to the Lanza’s and many of those killed in the massacre.

*Update Adam Lanza Killed Out of Anger and Jealousy?*

The gunman who slaughtered 20 children and six adults at a Connecticut elementary school may have snapped because his mother was planning to commit him to a psychiatric facility, according to a lifelong resident of the area who was familiar with the killer’s family and several of the victims’ families.
Adam Lanza, 20, targeted Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown after killing his mother early Friday because he believed she loved the school “more than she loved him,” said Joshua Flashman, 25, who grew up not far from where the shooting took place. Flashman, a U.S. Marine, is the son of a pastor at an area church where many of the victims' families worship.
“From what I've been told, Adam was aware of her petitioning the court for conservatorship and (her) plans to have him committed," Flashman told FoxNews.com. "Adam was apparently very upset about this. He thought she just wanted to send him away. From what I understand, he was really, really angry. I think this could have been it, what set him off.”
A senior law enforcement official involved in the investigation confirmed that Lanza's anger at his mother over plans for “his future mental health treatment” is being looked at as a possible motive for the deadly shooting.
The Washington Post reported that the distraught mother had considered moving with her son to Washington state, where she had found a school she thought could help him. Either way, according to Flashman, Nancy Lanza was at her wit's end.
A separate neighborhood source also told FoxNews.com that Nancy Lanza had come to the realization she could no longer handle her son alone. She was caring for him full-time, but told friends she needed help. She was planning to have him involuntarily hospitalized, according to the source, who did not know if she had taken formal steps.
Flashman said nobody will completely understand why Adam did what he did.
“No one can explain Adam Lanza besides God and Adam Lanza, and I don’t even think Adam Lanza could explain Adam Lanza, to be honest with you.”

littlebytesnews's insight:

This really could be the root of the outburst...but the underlying problem is still the mental illness and apparently his mother thought she could help him alone until it became unmanageable. Sadly, she waited to long to get him the help  he needed and as a result she's dead, along with 20 innocent children and teachers and Adam's dead.

It's so important to get troubled kids the help they need early to avoid a situation like this and not live in denial. Nobody wants to believe their child could do something so violent until one day it happens, but by then it is too late!

It is also reported by an Uncle that Adam was on an anti-psychotic drug, Fanapt, which apparently is prescribed for schizophrenia...sadly if true, that wasn't enough for him either, he needed 24 hour supervision and to be out of the public where he could harm others and himself.

Obama 'backs assault weapons ban'

Obama 'backs assault weapons ban' | Littlebytesnews Current Events | Scoop.it
US President Barack Obama wants to reinstate a ban on assault weapons, the White House says, following the killings at a school in Newtown, Connecticut.
littlebytesnews's insight:

Of course he did....but it still won't help when they are stolen...the weapons used in CT were stolen, Adam Lanza was denied the purchase of a weapon but refused a background check. So he resorted to desperate measures and stole his moms weapons. More laws won't stop crazy people from doing crazy things.

I don't know when his mom purchased the AR15, but if the ban was in place it wouldn't have stopped him from stealing it and it wouldn't have stopped him from killing her and 20 innocent children. The best protection, is self protection....teachers/staff need armed protection and/or security in the schools!

Two days after Sandy Hook tragedy, a bereft mother has 'best day of my life': Her 7-year-old son visited her in a vision, she says

Two days after Sandy Hook tragedy, a bereft mother has 'best day of my life': Her 7-year-old son visited her in a vision, she says | Littlebytesnews Current Events | Scoop.it
Becky Kowalski and her husband, Stephen, say the visit has strengthened their resolve to see through the Chase Kowalski Scholarship Fund, which they hope will save lives, change building codes, foster gun control and 'bring God back to America.'...

Becky Kowalski raced to the firehouse.

“And I saw all my friends with their children and taking them home,” she says. “I started asking them, ‘Did you see Chase? Did you see Chase?’ They kept telling me to go the firehouse. So I went in there. I was starting to panic. Then I asked my friend Lisa if she’d seen Chase. She said, ‘I think I saw him.’ I said, ‘Okay, okay.’ That gave me the pause I needed, the hope that kept me from losing it, from plunging into total despair. It was a gift Lisa gave me at that critical moment to know that she thought she saw my son.”

Becky’s son was in Amanda D’Amato’s class and a state trooper told her that the parents for that teacher’s class should wait in a special room in the rear of the firehouse.

“So I went into the back and called Stephen and told him they’d taken kids to different locations,” Becky says.

“That was before they told us that 20 children were dead,” says Becky.

She takes a deep breath, stronger than anyone could imagine this mother to be at her son’s wake in Monroe, Conn., where the coffin was closed for reasons that are too soon to detail.

Who told them there were 20 dead children?

“I heard it on the radio on the way to the firehouse,” Stephen says.

“The state police told us in the firehouse,” Becky says.

By this time, almost an hour had passed.

“I figured maybe he was shot and in a hospital and alive,” says Becky.

Stephen says, “Then I got to the firehouse and the troopers made me sign a sheet of paper. I counted the signatures. There were 20 signatures. I had a sense then that my son was gone.”

He nods, as strong as Becky, which means they must have had a pretty damned tough little kid.

Becky found Stephen in the firehouse, and they went into the back room again.

“Then they assigned each of us a trooper,” Becky says.

The trooper asked Becky what Chase was wearing that morning. “I told him a green long-sleeved shirt, black sweatpants with a gray stripe, and black L.L. Bean shoes. I’ll never forget because when he came out of his room that morning I looked him up and down and said, ‘Hmm, nice outfit.’ He picked it out himself so I was letting him go because he was such a funny little guy.”

“Yes, he sure was,” says Stephen.

“By 3 o’clock, the troopers came to us again and said the two kids who went to the hospital had perished,” Becky says. “I knew then. But I felt they weren’t forthcoming. I understand that they did what they did to keep us as calm as they could so that we could give them descriptions so they could identify the kids.”

Especially the ones who were unidentifiable.

“And then Gov. (Dannel) Malloy came out and gave a speech and said he wasn’t gonna take any questions from the families of the dead kids,” Stephen says.

And that’s how they knew Chase was gone.

The Kowalskis say Friday night and Saturday were hours of grief and numbness, of huddling with their daughters, Brittany, a high schooler, and Erin , who is in middle school, and accepting the reality of Chase’s death.

Becky takes a deep breath on Wednesday in the funeral home and says, “Okay, the best day of my life started on Sunday morning when my son came to me in a vision. He came to tell me to explain to my husband that the scope of this event was so large and that there were so many people around the country and the world we were touching. I felt that my son was here in this vision to tell me that the not-for-profit scholarship organization that we are starting in Chase’s honor will save lives, change building codes, demand gun and ammunition control, and that in Chase’s name I would like to bring God back to America. These are the first starting goals of the organization.”

She says she will keep Chase alive in her life through the Chase Kowalski Scholarship Fund.

“I don’t know where it’s going,” she says. “All I can say is that it’s in the beginning stages. But after I received that vision from Chase, my sadness left me and I have been strong since. He’ll stay alive through the work this organization does and I will never let people forget Chase or any of the other 19 children who were lost that day.”

Chase is still with us and will be in the work of the organization in his name.”

littlebytesnews's insight:

Such a heartbreaking recollection of the details leading up to when they found out their child was dead and not coming home :(

I pray for the family of Chase and all the others to find strength in God and healing through these organizations and funds they are putting together. I hope they continue to find strength through one another and peace in their hearts know their children are well cared for and they will meet again in Heaven. I can't imagine the heartache they must have felt that day and their hearts sinking when they realized their son was one of the dead. So heartbreaking to hear some were unrecognizable indicating he may have shot them in the head like he did his mother :(

"Chase is still with us and will be in the work of the organization in his name.”

While gun and ammunition control seems to be the solution many are using as an emotional reaction to the shooting;what would have really helped&likely saved most of those lives would have been an armed security guard or armed teacher or staff member. If that principal had a gun she could have taken Adam Lanza out before he was able to attack and kill 20 students and their teacher, as well as five other staff members.

Philadelphia teen threatens school shooting, has two handguns in his room

Philadelphia teen threatens school shooting, has two handguns in his room | Littlebytesnews Current Events | Scoop.it
Two handguns have been seized from the bedroom of a teen who threatened a shooting at his suburban Philadelphia high school a week after a mass killing at a Connecticut elementary school, police said Friday.

The Council Rock South High School ninth-grader was taken into custody Thursday after fellow students reported he made threatening statements, Northampton Township police said. Two 9 mm handguns were in plain sight in the boy's bedroom when police went to his home, according to Detective Sgt. Bill Klein. He said a more thorough search would be performed after police obtained a search warrant. Klein said at least two students and their parents reported the threats to police Thursday night. The unidentified student remains in custody at a juvenile facility. His mother was charged with drug and weapons counts after police arrived at the home, and a man in the home was charged with obstruction of justice and resisting arrest, Klein said.

littlebytesnews's insight:

Too many troubled teens, broken homes and mental issues going unaddressed or ignored. This kid sounds like he was looking for attention and got it, thankfully before he acted out on his crime. It sounds like he comes from a broken home with a drug using mother and her boyfriend. He's obviously missing a good male role model and lacks the proper parent supervision he needs. He should be given a mental evaluation to determine if he has any underlying deeper issues like schizophrenia going on though it sounds like it was something he said but didn't have the plan or courage to act out...yet. I hope he gets the help he needs and never has access to weapons again for making such a threat.

How many more Adam Lanza's, James Holmes, Jared Loughner's are out there....many...how soon before the next mass shooting in a gun free zone, months if not years. But until we do away with 'gun free zones' and allow properly trained security or staff in these places like schools, churches, malls, etc to be armed we will continue to have the problem of mass shootings. We must be prepared to protect ourselves, because by the time police arrive, most crimes have already been committed and sadly if a gun is involved, regardless of the type, someone has been shot, injured or killed.

This is at least the third report of a threat to harm, shoot, kill or blow up a school setting since last Friday. Imagine how many more incidents like this go unreported nationally and how many we could face once terrorists infiltrate our country due to the weak illegal immigrant restrictions and border security we have.

FBI data:the average American is more likely to be killed by “hands, fists” or “feet” than "assault" rifle | Littlebytesnews Current Events | Scoop.it
Editor's note -- We'll be discussing this story and all the day's news during our live BlazeCast at 12pm ET...including your questions, comments & live chat: While anti-gun advocates argue that banning semi-automatic rifles, like the popular...

“Yes, massacres tend to be done with weapons like this. But not most gun murders in the U.S.: a vast majority of gun murders in the U.S. are committed with a handgun,” The Washington Examiner’s Timothy Carney writes.

... the vast majority of murders in the U.S. are indeed committed with handguns, not rifles. More people were killed with shotguns (373), knifes/blades (1,704) and “other weapon[s]” (1,772) more often than they were with rifles in 2010, which were reportedly used in 358 murders that year.

Whether it’s a knife, gun or a fist, will a “ban” of any kind sway a deranged individual’s decision to take human lives?

(H/T: Weasel Zippers)

littlebytesnews's insight:

... a vast majority of gun murders in the U.S. are committed with a handgun...no law is going to stop a crazed criminal from committing a crime or murder...that is why celebrities, the President and others use armed security.

If most murders are committed with handguns what are they going to do next, ban the use of handguns too?? What needs to happen is people need to be able to protect themselves and schools should provide the proper security necessary to keep our kids safe. Gun Free Zones have proven to be more dangerous for innocent victims and makes them a target to the criminal who has no regard for the law already.

Since 1950 Most Mass Shootings Occured in Gun Free Zones--Making People Targets

Since 1950 Most Mass Shootings Occured in Gun Free Zones--Making People Targets | Littlebytesnews Current Events | Scoop.it
John Fund writes on NRO: A few things you won’t hear about from the saturation coverage of the Newtown, Conn., school massacre:Mass shootings are no more common than they have been in past decades, despite the impression given by the media. In fact,...

38 of the 61 mass shooters in the past three decades “displayed signs of mental health problems prior to the killings.

...every public shooting since at least 1950 in the U.S. in which more than three people have been killed has taken place where citizens are not allowed to carry guns.

Gun-free zones have been the most popular response to previous mass killings. But many law-enforcement officials say they are actually counterproductive. “Guns are already banned in schools. That is why the shootings happen in schools. A school is a ‘helpless-victim zone,’” says Richard Mack, a former Arizona sheriff. “Preventing any adult at a school from having access to a firearm eliminates any chance the killer can be stopped in time to prevent a rampage,”

Economists John Lott and William Landes conducted a groundbreaking study in 1999, and found that a common theme of mass shootings is that they occur in places where guns are banned and killers know everyone will be unarmed, such as shopping malls and schools.

I spoke with Lott after the Newtown shooting, and he confirmed that nothing has changed to alter his findings. He noted that the Aurora shooter, who killed twelve people earlier this year, had a choice of seven movie theaters that were showing the Batman movie he was obsessed with. All were within a 20-minute drive of his home. The Cinemark Theater the killer ultimately chose wasn’t the closest, but it was the only one that posted signs saying it banned concealed handguns carried by law-abiding individuals. All of the other theaters allowed the approximately 4 percent of Colorado adults who have a concealed-handgun permit to enter with their weapons.

“Disarming law-abiding citizens leaves them as sitting ducks,” Lott told me. “A couple hundred people were in the Cinemark Theater when the killer arrived. There is an extremely high probability that one or more of them would have had a legal concealed handgun with him if they had not been banned.”

Lott offers a final damning statistic: “With just one single exception, the attack on congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords in Tucson in 2011, every public shooting since at least 1950 in the U.S. in which more than three people have been killed has taken place where citizens are not allowed to carry guns.”

littlebytesnews's insight:

More reason we don't need more laws...criminals and the insane don't care about laws...they will find a way to get the weapons they need whether it is a gun or bombs....

(Reuters) - The U.S. House of Representatives approved the final version of the annual defense policy bill on Thursday, authorizing $633.3 billion in defense spending for 2013, easing limits on satellite exports and providing moreMarines for embassy security.

The Republican-controlled House approved the 2013 National Defense Authorization Act by a vote of 315-107. The measure must still be approved by the Senate before it can go to President Barack Obama to be signed into law.

The measure authorizes a Pentagon base budget of $527.5 billion, plus $88.5 billion for overseas operations, primarily the war in Afghanistan. The base budget includes $17.4 billion for defense-related nuclear programs at the Energy Department.

The NDAA sets defense policy for the year. While it authorizes spending levels for different military programs, it does not appropriate the money. That is done under separate legislation in the House and Senate.

In addition to authorizing the size of the military budget, the bill approved a 1.7 pay increase for military personnel and blocked a Pentagon effort to offset rising healthcare costs for retirees by raising some health insurance fees.

The measure eases restrictions on the export of satellites to help U.S. manufacturers, who have seen their global share of the market shrink to less than 25 percent from 65 percent 15 years ago, said Representative Adam Smith, the top Democrat on theHouse Armed Services Committee.

littlebytesnews's insight:

As far as I have heard it also removed the ability for the military to detain any American indefinitely without due process. This sounds like it could help alleviate some of the cuts that could occur if sequestration takes place??

Another Marine veteran of Iraq war guards Calif. school

Another Marine veteran of Iraq war guards Calif. school | Littlebytesnews Current Events | Scoop.it
HUGHSON, Calif. — A Marine veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan took up self-imposed duty in front of a central California elementary school in the wake of the Connecticut shooting.

Hughson Elementary School Principal Laura Fong said Sgt. Craig Pusley stood all day Wednesday in fatigues in front of the flag pole at the school just southeast of Modesto. He was not armed.

Pusley, who served two tours in Iraq and one in Afghanistan before leaving active duty last year, told Fong that “he wanted to make the kids feel safe in light of what happened at Sandy Hook Elementary,” the principal said.

The veteran Marine arrived at the K-3 school a little before 7:30 a.m., Fong said, and asked permission to stand guard. He stood in front of the flag pole until 2:30 p.m., she said, without taking any breaks.

Pusley is the father of a 3-year-old, and his wife is expecting another child. He told the Modesto Bee that he decided to take action after reading a Facebook post urging soldiers to be posted at every school in the wake of last week’s tragic shooting in Connecticut.

“When I enlisted, I swore to defend this country from all enemies, foreign and domestic,” Pusley said. “I just want to be sure all these kids go home safe for Christmas.”

Fong said Pusley is returning Thursday, the school’s last day before the holiday break.

littlebytesnews's insight:

Very cool...this is the second dad and Marine I have heard of doing this for the safety of children and staff in schools. I think it's time we provide them with armor to defend&protect themselves and the students to make sure they are able to stop anyone from attempting another Newtown or Columbine incident.

When School Children Got Murdered In Stockton, CA

When School Children Got Murdered In Stockton, CA | Littlebytesnews Current Events | Scoop.it
In a statement following the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School that took the lives of twenty children and six adults, President Obama made a decided shift.

Nearly 24 years ago, a shooting similar to the one in Newtown took place in Stockton, California. On January 17, 1989, one Edward Patrick Purdy, age 24, entered the grounds of the Cleveland Elementary School in Stockton and opened fire on a schoolyard full of small children. He murdered five and wounded 30. The ages of those killed ranged from 6 to 9 years old. Like Adam Lanza, Purdy used a high-powered assault rifle, in Purdy’s case an AK-47, emptying 105 rounds. He was also dressed in full military fatigues. And Purdy took his own life before the authorities arrived.

All five victims in Stockton were either Cambodian or Vietnamese, the children of refugees who had resettled to the United States in the aftermath of the Vietnam War and the Cambodian genocide, and this led many to conclude that Purdy’s motive was racial hatred. Some even speculated that Purdy was a Vietnam War veteran whose contempt for the enemy had made its way “back home,” forgetting that Purdy was only 24. But when the investigation yielded no clear evidence of particular hatred for Southeast Asians, much less ties to white supremacist groups, people focused instead on Purdy’s history of mental illness, arguing that he was a “psychotic”—plain and simple. He was a “psychotic” who did something “random” and “senseless.” But “psychotic” didn’t answer much of anything; it was merely another word for something we don’t understand. And so the narrative around the shooting became politically charged, and to this day there is no clear agreement on why Purdy did it.

I first became familiar with the Stockton shooting when I worked for the Committee Against Anti-Asian Violence during the late-1990s. I read all the investigative reports and secondary literature on the case, and one thing that struck me about these many writings was that they consistently excluded the views of the family members of those killed and the survivors of the shooting. So, years later, while conducting doctoral research on Cambodian refugees in the urban United States, I set out to hear from those who had been dropped from the record. (My interviews with them will be featured in a forthcoming book project on anti-Asian violence in the United States.)

To my surprise, none of those I interviewed had much interest in the killer, Edward Patrick Purdy. I spoke with Rann Chun, who was a student at Cleveland Elementary when the shooting took place. He survived, but his little sister, Ram Chun, did not. Twenty years after his sister’s death, Chun returned to Cleveland Elementary to teach first and third grades. Chun had always wanted to be a teacher, but coming back to this particular school was deliberate. “I chose to be here. Being here helps me let go of the tragedy, but still hold on to her,” he said.

Chun had long ago decided that the details of the shooter were irrelevant. He did not care to waste his time or future by fixating on Purdy. Others expressed similar views. Family members of the dead were largely uninterested in the facts uncovered by the California State Attorney General’s investigation—about Purdy’s personal past, his history of mental illness, or his occasional run-ins with the law. Family members also had little to say about gun control.

But none of this means they were uninterested in an explanation. Each person I spoke with believed that there was nothing random about the shooting. Each, in his or her own way, believed that the deaths of these children had been caused by a force greater than the psychotic behavior of a lone gunman. This larger force could best be described as a spirit of violence that pervaded their adopted homeland. America, they believed, had created a culture in which the broader public’s fascination with militarism, domination, and destruction can feed into and heighten a person’s disease and inner torment.

The Attorney General’s investigation into Purdy claimed that Purdy despised authority, that he hated those who had pushed him around all of his life. But this hatred also caused him to covet the very power that he felt rendered him powerless. And so he followed the lead of his perceived tormentors. He mimed them: Dressed in full military fatigues, Prudy went on a mission to obliterate the innocent.

Father, Former Marine Stands Guard At Elementary School

Father, Former Marine Stands Guard At Elementary School | Littlebytesnews Current Events | Scoop.it
After the tragic events at Sandy Hook Elementary School, one local father and former Marine is standing guard at his children's school and parents say he's a welcome addition to the school.

Jordan Pritchard, a former Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps, pulled down his old Marine Corps uniform from the attic Sunday night and decided to make a difference in his community. When he was in the military his job was to keep our country safe and for the next week he planned bring that safety home by standing guard outside the front door of Gower Elementary School.

He said it's his responsibility.

"I'm doing this because we need hope man. We need hope," explained Pritchard.

He's a volunteer. He's not getting paid. He's not even armed, but parent said they feel a whole lot better about leaving their children at school while he's been at the front door.

littlebytesnews's insight:

Great idea...though I think if parents want to volunteer to stand guard to protect their children's school they should at least be trained and armed to defend themselves. While this former Marine may be trained....he's still unarmed and I think he would be more effective if there was ever a threat if they knew he was armed.

If parents don't step up to volunteer and get trained, they should hire former military, law enforcement, etc to stand outside their children's schools. They should get the Teacher's Unions to pay the armed security and/or hire NRA members who are able to volunteer their time or pay them to help too.

This father is a great American and deserves recognition and credit. Hopefully him being there creates enough of a deterrance from anyone thinking of causing any harm there, but I would feel better for him if he was also armed. Why wait until the police come after an active shooter or someone posing a threat with a weapon is already on the scene??

Connecticut Mental Health Bill Defeated Months Before Deadly School Shooting-ACLU said 'infringed on patients' rights

Connecticut Mental Health Bill Defeated Months Before Deadly School Shooting-ACLU said 'infringed on patients' rights | Littlebytesnews Current Events | Scoop.it
Connecticut Senate Bill 452 was proposed in February “to enhance the care and treatment of persons with psychiatric disabilities in both inpatient and outpatient settings.” But the bill was defeated in March, with opposition calling it “outrageously discriminatory.” The ACLU said the bill would “infringe on patients’ privacy rights by expanding [the circle of] who can medicate individuals without their consent.”

Had the AOT bill been passed, it would have given the state the right to institutionalize a person who is mentally ill for treatment if the state has enough evidence to believe that the person could be a danger to himself or the community.

EXCLUSIVE: Fear of being committed may have caused Connecticut gunman to snap  http://sco.lt/64xQQr ;  Fox Newsreports Adam may have been upset over time his mother was spending tutoring at the elementary school and that she was talking about committing him for mental help and a psychiatric evaluation.

Considering his mom was preparing to have him committed this bill could have helped her avoid the legal process of going through the court to file for conservatorship and get him committed. It's not clear if she was in the process of filing or was just talking about doing it and he found out.

Obama backs Feinstein bid to reinstate assault-weapons ban

Obama backs Feinstein bid to reinstate assault-weapons ban | Littlebytesnews Current Events | Scoop.it
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama supports U.S.
littlebytesnews's insight:

If it's not a gun it will be something else...Timothy McVeigh and the 9/11 Terrorists didn't use a gun...they used bombs or hijacked planes and used box cutters to threaten vicitms and take planes over and crashed them into buildings. Thankfully mass shootings in schools are rare, but lately they have been one after another making emotions run high to ban guns. That's a reaction not a solution...the best solution to any threat is self defense. If teachers were armed more children would be alive today in Sandy Hook. What finally stopped the gunman?? The sound of ARMED law enforcement arriving on the scene! What stopped the shooter in Oregon a few days before the Newtown, CT tragedy?? An armed off duty security officer with a concealed carry license holding his gun straight at the shooter while his gun locked up. He said the shooter saw him and once the gun unjammed the first shot and only shot he fired was at himself...he knew he was finished!
