Sandy Hook shooter allegedly spared school nurse--looked her in the eyes, then walked out

Sandy Hook shooter allegedly spared school nurse--looked her in the eyes, then walked out | Littlebytesnews Current Events | Scoop.it
The nurse at Sandy Hook Elementary School told WUSA that the shooter walked into her office and when he saw her, he turned around and walked out the door.
littlebytesnews's insight:

What's odd is that the school nurse told reporters she knew the shooter, Adam Lanza, and his mother was a Kindergarten teacher at the school...but police have reported otherwise. The last I heard from police was that Nancy Newtown volunteered at the school last year in the class he did most of the shooting, in which 20 children were killed. Also, Victoria Soto's class was the second classroom he entered and began killing students after he shot their teacher, at least six ran out and survived and about ten were hidden in the classroom thanks to their teacher, but he shot others who were trying to flee, along with the teacher.

I wonder why he spared the school nurses life and if he did know her if he had some kind of admiration or respect for her and that's why he spared her life??

Blog turns tables on gun map paper - Katie Glueck

Blog turns tables on gun map paper - Katie Glueck | Littlebytesnews Current Events | Scoop.it
A blogger who retaliated against a New York newspaper that came under fire for identifying people with gun licenses in its circulation area explained on Thursday why he published the names and home addresses of the paper’s employees.

“Well, I just thought they were being hypocrites,” said Christopher Fountain on CNN’s “Early Start.” “In the aftermath of Newtown, it was obviously one tragedy, but somehow they were conflating legal gun owners with some crazed tormented devil up in Newtown and putting the two together. And I was offended by that and I wondered how they would like it if their addresses were published.” http://christopherfountain.wordpress.com/2012/12/26/ha-where-are-the-journal-news-reporters-in-your-neighborhood/

That move came several days after the Journal News published interactive maps of Westchester and Rockland counties, which named people with gun licenses and included their addresses — igniting outrage from the right and from some readers.

“We knew publication of the database [as well as the accompanying article providing context] would be controversial, but we felt sharing information about gun permits in our area was important in the aftermath of the Newtown shootings,” Janet Hasson, president and publisher of the Journal News Media Group, told POLITICO Wednesday in a statement.

Fountain swung back at that response.

“Well, she could have just published the number of gun permits, which is actually quite small, if she wanted to show an issue that there are 2,000 legally registered guns in her county, fine,” he said. “But the fact that they put the addresses — I’ve received e-mails from abused women who were under protective order and in hiding and they’re terribly afraid that now their names and addresses are all over the Internet and accessible through that map.”

He added that he was giving the paper a taste of its own medicine.

“The media has been exposing, harassing personal details of people for a long time,” Fountain said. “I don’t believe I’m escalating, I believe I’m punching back.

“My original point in posting this was to just show those particular reporters and the publisher what it feels like,” he continued.

littlebytesnews's insight:

NY State Senator Greg Ball, says gun owners information should remain private. It's not illegal for the Journal News to print the names and addresses of gun owners in NY, but he will pass a bill to make sure it is made illegal to publish private information concerning gun ownership. Having a licensed&registered gun is not breaking the law, why expose their personal information and put them at a greater risk of threats, violence and putting those who do not own guns at greater risk.

Update:

BREAKING NEWS: SENATOR BALL ISSUES STATEMENT ON JOURNAL NEWS GUN PERMIT MAP AND INTRODUCES LEGISLATION TO PREVENT FUTURE ACTS OF IDIOCY
Posted by Greg Ball on Wednesday, December 26th, 2012

Ball: “Asinine Journal News Editors treat sex offenders better than law abiding gun owners”

Brewster, N.Y. – 12/26/2012 – Today Senator Greg Ball (Patterson – R, C, I) called for the Journal News Newspaper, a Gannett Company, to immediately remove a map they have posted on their website that unethically reveals homeowners with pistol permits in Westchester, Rockland and Putnam Counties. The Journal News says that the information contained in the map was obtained by submitting Freedom of Information requests for the names and addresses of pistol permit holders by county. Senator Ball has now announced that he will introduce legislation in the New York State Senate, to prevent this from happening again.

“The asinine editors at the Journal News, have once again gone out of their way to place a virtual scarlet letter on law abiding firearm owners throughout the region. The immediate elimination of the information posted on the Journal News Website is the only way we can ensure the safety and liberty of these New Yorkers. This is clearly a violation of privacy, and needs to be corrected immediately. The same elitist egg heads who use their editorial page to coddle terrorists and criminals are now treating law abiding citizens like level three sexual predators. Am I surprised? No. Should every person with commonsense be offended? Yes. Furthermore, the Journal News has placed the lives of these folks at risk by creating a virtual shopping list for criminals and nut jobs,” said Ball. “Publishing this information on a website provides criminals with a map of where they can steal firearms from lawful owners for later use in the commission of crimes. Preventing the theft of guns and their criminal misuse is an important public-policy goal. This map is bad for the good guys and good for the bad guys.”

In the Assembly Ball multi-sponsored Assembly bill 820, legislation which would prohibit the public disclosure of information in an application for a pistol license with exceptions for prosecutors and police conducting an active investigation. Senator Ball will be introducing similar legislation, immediately. The bill would protect lawful gun owners from being targeted by thieves for firearm burglaries and eliminate a database criminals could use to extort their identity-theft victims.

For more information or to speak with Senator Ball, please contact Joe Bachmeier at (845) 200 9716.

The writer of the Journal News article that exposed legal gun owners is himself a gun owner, but failed to list his name/address on the map he provided.

http://christopherfountain.wordpress.com/2012/12/24/so-how-does-journal-news-reporter-dwight-r-worley-rate-a-nyc-pistol-permit/

“Journal News reporter Dwight R. Worley owns a Smith & Wesson 686 .357 Magnum and has had a residence permit in New York City for that weapon since February 2011.”

Yet he felt it was ok to publish other law abiding gun owners personal information. What hypocrisy.

In the meantime abused women who own guns for self protection and who were under protective order are afraid that their names and addresses are all over the internet and accessible through the map.

But a a retired NYC detective whose name and address were among those released by these cretins. He’s now receiving death threats to himself and his family.

http://christopherfountain.wordpress.com/2012/12/24/did-the-journal-news-break-the-law-by-posting-gun-permit-holders-names/

It's time to hold these irresponsible reporters accountable for endangering the lives of others and stop the insanity.

More Police in Schools Often Means More Students in the Juvenile Justice System--Better there than on the streets or in schools

More Police in Schools Often Means More Students in the Juvenile Justice System--Better there than on the streets or in schools | Littlebytesnews Current Events | Scoop.it
Barely two weeks since the shooting in Connecticut, and without surprise, we're no longer any closer to resolving our differences on assault weapons and why the NRA exists in its current incarnation.
littlebytesnews's insight:

I'd rather more troubled kids in juvenile system than causing problems at school or walking the streets committing crimes. Otherwise, they should be suspended and expelled if they continue to pose a threat, but those who appear to have any substance abuse problem, mental illness, emotional immaturity/outbursts should be referred to the proper authorities. I don't think more juveniles in the justice system is necessarily a reason not to have more armed security or SRO's in our scohols

Gun-ban Chicago: Nearly 15,000 murders since 1990--446/489 children killed this year alone! | Littlebytesnews Current Events | Scoop.it
Oct. 28, 2012, the city of Chicago surpassed the previous year's number of murders (433), when a man, identified as 68-year-old Bariffe Fitz, was found shot

Since January 1, 1990, an astonishing 14,973 people have been murdered in Chicago. Even worse, many of the victims have been children.

There have been 62 school-aged children murdered in that city in 2012, alone.

Of course, it could have been worse, since an astounding 446 of 489[as of Dec 21] children have actually been shot this year.
The following case is fairly typical in the city that is now more dangerous than Baghdad:

William Spengler, ex-convict who killed 2 firemen in Webster, left note saying he wanted to 'do what I like doing best, killing people'

William Spengler, ex-convict who killed 2 firemen in Webster, left note saying he wanted to 'do what I like doing best, killing people' | Littlebytesnews Current Events | Scoop.it
Police In Webster, N.Y., say the man who lured firefighters to their deaths in a blaze of gunfire left a typewritten note saying he wanted to burn down the neighborhood and "do what I like doing best, killing people."...

The psycho sniper who boasted that killing people was he did best gunned down two volunteer firefighters used an all too familiar weapon: a Bushmaster .223 caliber rifle.

That same model of killing machine was used in the horrific elementary school massacre in Newtown, Conn., where 20 children and six staffers died.

The chilling revelation came Tuesday morning — a day after the gunman, William Spengler, set his home on fire and ambushed first responders, turning his suburban neighborhood outside of Rochester, N.Y. into a burning war zone.

Investigators scouring the scorched crime scene for a motive found a disturbing note hinting at Spengler's madness.

"I still have to get ready and see how much of the neighborhood I can burn down, and do what I like doing best, killing people," Spengler, 62, wrote in a note according to Webster Police Chief Gerald Pickering.

Spengler, who shot himself around 11 a.m. after torching his car and home, was also armed with a Smith and Wesson .38 caliber revolver and 12 gauge shotgun, Pickering said.

His semi-automatic assault rifle was equipped with a flash suppressant.

Spengler’s 67-year-old sister, Cheryl, was still missing Tuesday afternoon.

The chaos began at 5:30 a.m. when Spengler unleashed a hail of bullets on firefighters and cops caught in his trap.

Spengler fired from a nearby berm as if he were a military sniper. Two firefighters died in the “kill zone” Spengler created, and two other firefighters and a cop were wounded.

“It appears it was a trap,” Pickering said Monday, fighting back tears during an emotional news conference. “People get up in the middle of the night to fight fires. They don’t expect to get shot and killed.”

A 911 call from one of the wounded men hinted at the horrifying scene.

littlebytesnews's insight:

Again, twisted, crazed, criminals can not be rehabilitated...if they've killed once they'll kill again...just like wild animals...which get euthanized. Sadly, liberals think they can rehabilitate these people and just because this nut got off with manslaughter for brutally beating his 92yro, defenseless grandmother to death with a hammer in 1981, doesn't mean he was going to rehabilitate himself after 17yrs. William Spengler was released from prison in 2006, even after he was convicted of intentionally killing his grandmother. He should have been kept in jail for life if not given the death penalty. Anyone who kills without self defense and with malicious intent should never walk free in society again.
It took Spengler a few years to act violently again, that we know of, before he attacked and killed these firemen. Who knows how many other victims there might be we don't know about, as his sister is still missing. He obviously 'enjoyed killing', as he wrote in his note, indicating he knew what he was doing. In the case of William Spengler, he planned to ambush these defenseless firemen and carried out his plan. Just like with Adam Lanza, James Holmes, Jared Loughner and other killers and criminals in the past, all planned and executed their evil plans. They know what they are doing, they are not so crazy that they don't know what they are doing...they just don't care about right and wrong, the law or doing what is right. They are purely evil, mentally ill or not!

No law will ever stop these people, therefore law abiding citizens should have the right to defend and protect themselves from such evil and crazed people who walk among us. In reality we are not safe in our own homes...you may feel safe and the chances are that most people will never be a victim of a violent crime, but there are criminals and evil people all around us. As long as man has existed evil has existed.

Thankfully, most people are inherently good and raised with values and morals....and aren't crazy and possessed by evil. But, that 1% of evil is enough to require us to have self protection, police and laws to manage those who may do us harm. We can't take our lives so forgranted that we think we are always safe from harm and we can't believe that the police will arrive before a crime is committed. Nobody knows when or where evil will strike, but when it does we must be able to defend and protect ourselves. Those who don't want to protect themselves must live with the risks and consequences involved.

The reality is that most police would love to help and save as many people as they can, but by the time they usually arrive on the scene a crime has already taken place....this is why 911 is called in the first place. Someone is either breaking into a home, car, business, attacking someone else or has killed others. We can't expect that they are going to arrive before the crime takes place and we can't expect that they will stop all crime before it happens or during a situation, but we can hope that once they arrive the crime will be stopped from progressing further because they are armed to defend themselves and those around them. Sadly, this is not always the case and the shooter usually gets away because they were not confronted by a threat, such as an armed person, or they take their own life.

Therefore, if we arm ourselves we can protect ourselves, hold a criminal until police arrive or shoot them in a life/death situation before our life is taken or others around us, as in the case of the school shooting at Newtown. If the principal and/or her staff had a weapon such as a gun to shoot back they could have prevented the travesty and additional deaths of so many other innocent lives. If there were armed security available on the premises the gunman would have been taken down much sooner, as he would have realized he was out numbered and his time was up. This is why Adam Lanza eventually took his own life; once ARMED police arrived on the scene and he heard them coming Adam Lanza, like other mass murderers, end up taking their own lives. They are cowards and will fire upon innocent and defenseless people because they know they will not be confronted by 'a good guy with a gun', giving them plenty of time to reload and shoot as many people as they want. Gun free zones are invitations to criminals to commit crimes. It doesn't matter what type of weapon they are using or how many cartridges they have, when fighting against defenseless people, those determined to kill will succeed whether it is one life taken or a dozen. This is why the only way to stop more lives from being taken is to fight back with your own weapon& by removing 'gun free zones', which offer a false sense of security, especially if you are unable to get away safely.

Some say armed security can't help in schools because Columbine had an armed guard, but he was on lunch break in the parking lot when the gunmen took teens hostage in the cafeteria and library of the school and killed classmates. But, this only confirms we need more than one armed guard in every school because one person is not enough to secure a large school, and like police, they will need backup support. But it also shows how important it is to have surveillance technology available to monitor school grounds and entrances for suspicious activity or persons.

Until proper security is in place in schools and other 'gun free zones', these types of attacks will continue to occur. While the chance of it happening in your child's school may be 1%, it doesn't hurt to offer our children the type of protection they deserve, just as the president or a celebrity's children. All children are valuable to us and ALL children should be protected with the best armed, trained security they need.

If the federal government expects us to send our kids to public schools and pay our taxes, they have an obligation to provide not only a quality education, but a safe and secure environment for our children. It doesn't have to cost taxpayers more money if they do it right and utilize proper resources from volunteer parents, to retired law enforcement and/or military or they could make use of the teacher's unions and use some of the membership dues to pay for training and armed security in our schools. Many schools already have at least one 'Student Resource Officer' or armed security on their campus, but many don't. Only about 2/3 of public schools offer any form of armed protection or metal detectors, this must be improved.

President Clinton introduced a plan similar to the proposed NRA plan in the 1990's, after the Columbine incident. According to reports some security was put into place in schools, but later cut back&unfunded under Obama prior to the Newtown shooting. It's time to take our children's security at school more seriously because they spend more of their waking hours at school then they do at home. Therefore, for anyone to criticize the proposal of the NRA VP, Wayne LaPierre, to provide armed security in our schools, is to be a hypocrite because Democratic President Clinton supported it in the 90's. The Newtown tragedy further proves how important it is to keep our schools safe and if the federal government isn't going to do it, parents should have the right to provide that protection themselves or school districts and states should be providing it. In addition, those who are completely against having armed security in their children's schools should be able to choose where to send their child. They can either choose a school with no armed security or armed security. However, it is my belief the majority of parents would rather send their child to a school with armed security rather than not.

Police have identified the man who this morning fatally shot two firefighters responding to the blaze he set in his own house as 62-year-old William H. Spengler Jr., reports the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle. Spengler was convicted of first-degree manslaughter in 1981 for beating his 92-year-old grandmother Rose Spengler to death with a hammer; he served 17 years in prison and had an "uneventful" parole that ended in 2006.

Media myths on ‘assault weapons’ and ‘semiautomatic firearms’&Preventing Gun Violence

Media myths on ‘assault weapons’ and ‘semiautomatic firearms’&Preventing Gun Violence | Littlebytesnews Current Events | Scoop.it
If gun-control advocates and our media want to have a conversation about government restrictions on gun ownership, I think that’s fine. Debating more issues, rather than fewer, is probably good for our politics.

Today’s New York Times story on the AR-15 has a lot of good information and aims to be balanced, but the story still manages to perpetuate many of the most stubborn myths about rifles.

Some points I would like to make in response:

Civilian-available AR-15s aren’t automatic weapons

First, the Times calls the AR-15 “the civilian version of the military’s M-16.” The M-16 is a machine gun, that throughout most of its history – and certainly in popular understanding – has been a fully-automatic weapon. When you squeeze the trigger on an automatic weapon, bullets keep firing out of it until you stop squeezing. The U.S. military has shied away from automatic firing, and the newest M-16s have other settings – three-shot burst (which, relative to the automatic setting, preserves ammo and inculcates more discipline among soldiers in combat) and semi-automatic.

AR-15s that are legal to buy do not have the three-shot burst that the military’s current M-16s have. They also don’t have the automatic-fire option that most people associate with the M-16. [Update: I should have made it clearer that the M-16s the U.S. military buys today do not have the automatic option.]

If you’re going to use a famous gun as a point of reference, it seems responsible to mention that unlike the famous machine gun you’re comparing it to, the AR-15 is incapable of automatic or burst fire.

‘Semiautomatic’ isn’t really a useful descriptor

The Times writes:

AR-15s are not the only weapons used by rampaging shooters. Semiautomatic handguns are also frequently employed.

Again, “semiautomatic” mostly means “not automatic.” You pull the trigger on a semiauto gun like an AR-15, and one bullet comes out. You pull it again, and another bullet comes out. Unlike a single-shot gun, you don’t need to cock it or load it after each shot.

‘Assault weapon’ is not a very helpful descriptor

The Times piece twice uses the term “assault weapon” to describe the AR-15. But there’s no real definition of the term.

First, all guns can be used to assault someone – even a muzzle-loading black-powder rifle.

Second, Congressional attempts to define this term were laughably ad hoc.

A rifle could cease being an assault weapon if you sawed off the flash suppressor. It could become an assault weapon if you added a bayonet.

A 49-ounce handgun could be legal under this law while an identical version that was one ounce heavier could be outlawed.

I’m pasting the bill’s definition of “assault weapon” at the bottom of this post. The law didn’t target guns used for murder. It targeted guns that look too military-like.

The AR-15 is not an “assault rifle”

Assault weapon/assault rifle, what’s the difference?

One is a meaningless term, as I explained above. The other is a precise term that doesn’t apply to the AR-15 – despite the Times’ article’s suggestion connecting the two. Also,  ”assault rifle” describes guns that are already illegal — because they are automatic — and basically never used in murders.

The Pentagon defines the term “assault rifle,” and David Kopel quotes that definition in an article in the Journal of Contemporary Law. He writes:

As the United States Defense Department’s Defense Intelligence Agency bookSmall Arms Identification and Operation Guide explains, “assault rifles” are “short, compact, selective-fire weapons that fire a cartridge intermediate in power between submachine gun and rifle cartridges.”[21] In other words, assault rifles are battlefield rifles which can fire automatically.[22]

Weapons capable of fully automatic fire, including assault rifles, have been regulated heavily in the United States since the National Firearms Act of 1934.[23] Taking possession of such weapons requires paying a $200 federal transfer tax and submitting to an FBI background check, including ten-print fingerprints.[24]

littlebytesnews's insight:

Like so many others, the past week has taken an emotional toll on me. I have been writing about and researching what needs to be done and how we can change so that another Sandy Hook, Columbine, Aurora killing or Virginia Tech shooting don't happen again.

The fact of the matter is no law or gun ban is going to stop the crazed and criminal minds from breaking the law. You can't regulate evil away, only God can do that when He returns. However, we can make moral and ethical choices which include taking responsibility for our actions and acting as law abiding citizens who are willing and able to defend life, should the need arise.

Before you start to think or say I'm a gun nut or 'right wing extremist', I'm not a gun owner nor enthusiast, though I have shot them before and would consider buying one for my own protection. However, I have not felt the need to, and have some fears of owning such a weapon with young children around so have put it off. I know there are safes and locks to keep it in,but I am not ready to purchase one at this time, but when the time comes I feel the need to arm myself, I want that right to personal freedom and protection to defend myself or family regardless of where I am. Sure we have laws against crimes and police to 'serve and protect us', but by the time the police arrive a crime has already taken place.

Most people who intend to commit a crime don't make a public announcement...some may leave clues, but they are not usually discovered until after the fact. Some people make verbal threats or written threats and that is when you can take some action to prevent harm to yourself by alerting the police, getting a restraining order or otherwise, but none of these things will actually stop someone from committing the crime unless you have solid enough proof prior to the act taking place.

We don't know when someone will 'lose it' and take their anger, frustrations and insane thoughts out on innocent people and the only way we can protect ourselves from such people and incidents is to protect ourselves. We must have the same rights as the police and the same protection the police could provide when seconds count and it is a life or death situation. There are many instances that go underreported where people's lives have been saved because they or someone nearby had a concealed weapon on hand to stop the killer from committing a crime. http://gunssavelives.net has a complete list of recent incidents in which armed citizens protect and defend themselves from harm.

While more and more Americans own guns, about half of all US households, violent crimes have actually fallen. More guns in the hands of 'good guys' keeps criminals from committing crimes. In addition, the actual number of killings by semi-automatic rifles like the AR-15 used in the Newtown shooting are rare.  A weapons ban on these or any gun would do nothing, especially when criminals can steal the weapon from law abiding gun owners, like Adam Lanza did, or they can buy them illegally.

In addition, the number of children who actually die or are killed in schools is actually only around 1% according to DOJ reports. However,  the shock of such a horrific massacre against such young and innocent children and the 24/7 media discussion of the incident leads politicians and others to react on emotion. This emotional reaction results in more laws, taking freedoms away from law-abiding citizens not the criminals, while ignoring the fact these criminals/murderers are already breaking several laws by stealing the guns and breaking into private property and acting out violently.

The problem is not the weapon of choice used, but the actions of the user. We would be better off trying to stop these tragedies from happening by protecting and securing our environment and making sure there are others readily available to take immediate action to stop the crime from becoming worse. If one teacher or the principal had a gun at Sandy Hook, I fully believe the senseless slaughter of so many would have been prevented. Even if they saved just one life, it would have been worth it to have someone armed with a gun to fight back.

Identifying those with mental health illness is another major factor in these cases. Your average person who watches violent movies or plays violent video games doesn't act out violently against others and knows the difference between right and wrong and have emotional control of themselves. However, those like Adam Lanza  who are prone to act out because they are already socially isolated,  have shown agression before in social settings[his mom had to home-school him because of outbursts at school&had to have a babysitter for him while he was a teen because she feared leaving him alone.] and/or they have had a life change like a divorce that has affected them long term emotionally [his parents divorced in 2009 and since then he became estranged from his father, had no male role model in his life, his older brother left home for college] made him more depressed and isolated, according to family friends.

These red flags should have alerted his mom to seek professional help and care for him and herself. She should have never put all of the burden on herself. Recent reports say she was preparing to seek professional help and have him committed and this may have been one reason he acted out the way he did...but the fact of the matter is, it sounds like she waited too long and should have gotten him the help he needed a lot sooner, like when she had to start home-schooling him.

Unfortunately his mother thought her love, time and committment to him was enough to make him feel loved and accepted but she still had troubles reaching him and 'bonding' with him so she taught him how to use guns and took him target shooting. I question his mother's logic on teaching such an emotionally unstable person how to use a gun, let alone letting him have access to them in her home, considering she warned others not to leave him alone when he was babysat as a teen. Family friends and those who went to school with him said he was highly intelligent and perhaps he knew how to break the safe or lock or combination to steal the guns and ammo, but knowing she had someone unstable living in her home she should have never allowed him to use the weapons let alone keep them in her home, in a room where he spent most of his time playing violent video games.  These violent games, the social isolation, aggressive behavior/outbursts, likely depression and other underlying mental illness we don't know about created a recipe for disaster.

Instead of gun control limiting law abiding citizens from protecting themselves from crazed criminals, we need better mental health awareness. While not every shy person who plays violent video games or watches violent movies is going to act out like Adam Lanza, we need to be able to recognize that those who are emotionally immature and unstable could be affected differently. They are at a higher risk to cause self harm or harm against others. These people who are at a higher risk should be evaluated and under professional supervision, and institutionalized if necessary. It's not the weapons, but the underlying instability of the person using these guns.

Evil will not go away with more laws, but prevention can take place by removing those who pose a potential danger to themselves and others from society. Unfortunately groups like the ACLU have made it difficult for families to care for those who are a high risk and suffer mental illness. They are often told the person has to commit a violent crime before they can be committed.  As a result, these families must then go through legal barriers to have someone committed against their will, unless they commit a violent act. While I should hope mental evaluations are done accurately and without malice, and people aren't committed because of convenience, it could alert those involved that this person needs help temporarily or permanently to keep them from posing a danger to society.

HuffPo:"Criminals are made, not born." School Killings: Why Have We Learned Nothing in 85 Years? | Littlebytesnews Current Events | Scoop.it
I have wondered for decades why the incident in which my great-uncle was murdered is simply called a "disaster" in the popular media, while more recent events are called "massacres," "mass killings," "killing sprees," "mass murders," "rampage...

But maybe that's the key to the entire problem. To me the term "disaster" implies the entire chain of events leading to a tragedy, while all those other more lurid terms pinpoint only the killer's action, ignoring what led to the motivation underlying it, and ignoring the victims entirely.

People who have decided to kill can't be stopped by government regulations on anything. Their wrath will show them new and devious ways to get around whatever barriers are put in their way in assembling their implements of destruction.Perhaps, someday, our government and our society can examine the root of the problem--disturbed people who feel so hopeless they mentally snap--instead of troweling on a facade of after-the-fact "controls" over the tools the killers used.

On May 18, 1927, my 8-year old great-uncle Arthur Victor Bauerle was murdered in the most deadly school killing in United States history. It left 44 people dead, 38 of them children ages seven through 14. As I study in horror and grief the recent events in Newtown, Aurora and beyond, some striking and tragic similarities appear. What disturbs me is how little we've seemed to learn in 85 years.

The terrorist in the "Bath School Disaster" that killed my great-uncle was 55-year-old school board treasurer Andrew Kehoe, disgruntled after losing the previous year's township clerk election, and convinced that the increase in his taxes to build the school was to blame for the foreclosure of his farm mortgage. Kehoe first killed his wife in her bed with a blunt object, then blew up his farm with dynamite and pyrotol. He had packed the school building with explosives during the prior months, and set a timed detonator for that morning. After the school was destroyed in the blast, Kehoe drove to the scene in a pickup truck he had filled with explosives and shrapnel. He then detonated it, killing himself and four others, including a child, the school superintendent, the postmaster, and a rescuer.

Onlookers, rescuers and the news media swarmed to the scene. The media stayed only about three days, unlike the months-long circuses inflicted upon the grieving today. No children were interviewed by the media in the aftermath, unlike Newtown. Such a thing would have been unthinkably exploitative and crass in those days. How has this happened to Journalism, once a noble and respected profession? Personally, I would be searching the Internet for a recipe on how to properly mix tar and feathers for best adhesion to any reporter so inclined to interview children after such an incident.

There was no public outcry for "dynamite control" following the Bath School Disaster, no impassioned congressional hearings on explosives took place, and no posturing politicians used the tragedy to further their own political agendas or increase PAC donations to their campaigns. Dynamite and pyrotol were common items on Bath Township farmsteads, and could be purchased at hardware and sporting goods stores. How could a farmer remove stumps and rocks from his fields without dynamite, and how would he burn his ditches and debris without pyrotol? Permits, fees, police background checks, registration numbers, ID cards? Not even considered. Do the citizens of Clinton County, Michigan want to eat, or just push paperwork around?

In the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing that killed 168 people, the murderers also used a common farmstead item to build their bomb: fertilizer. It took a political circus lasting 12 years to enact restrictions on the sale and transportation of ammonium nitrate fertilizer after Oklahoma City, and the Department of Homeland Security is still debating on how to implement the program. It requires registration numbers, fees, permits, ID cards and police background checks for anyone purchasing more than 25 pounds of fertilizer, all of this a huge burden on farmers. Does America want to eat? So what's to stop someone from buying one bag at 10 different stores? Nothing. How powerful would a device made from one bag of fertilizer be? Powerful enough. So, does "fertilizer control" make you feel safer now? Not me.

I hate even more to hear in the media the words "High-Powered Assault Rifle." By definition, assault weapons are low-powered. So they don't hurt your shoulder so much as you do your job or shoot your competition targets. I just wish the media would figure out what words mean what, like they have with reality TV shows.

I agree with the majority of this article, however when I got to the concluding paragraph I found myself in disagreement. While being kind to others is one of the greatest commandments, love thy neighbor, I disagree that we don't need armed guards in every school. You can't stop evil or crazed people and for this reason we need security for our children, just as any celebrities child or the president's children receive while they are in school. Media Violence Project---exposes mainstream media violence like: ABC Miami reporter charged with entering a school with a firearm.

Media Violence Project---exposes mainstream media violence like: ABC Miami reporter charged with entering a school with a firearm. | Littlebytesnews Current Events | Scoop.it

At the Media Violence Project, our charter is to protect public safety by researching, documenting and raising awareness about the ever-increasing wave of violent, disgusting crimes perpetrated by members of the American news media. It is a largely thankless task -- often requiring a cast iron stomach -- but if our work has prevented one more American child from falling victim to a criminally insane anchorman or newspaper reporter, it will all have been worth it.

Unfortunately, it now appears that these are the exceptions that prove the rule. In the two years since the MVP issued our first report, another tidal wave of media-related bizarre or violent crimes has come to light, each more shocking than the last. Like CNN reporter Richard Quest, arrested in New York's Central Park in 2008 brandishing a noose or ABC Miami reporter Jeffrey Weinsier, charged with entering a school with a firearm. Or New Hampshire Union Leader sports writer Kevin Provencher, charged withoperating a prostitution ring. It is unknown whether Provencher's alleged activities were related to WABC New York sports anchor Marvell Scott, who was arrested earlier this year for allegedly raping a 14-year old prostitute. It is also unclear whether this Granite State "mack daddy" used a "strong pimp hand" with his "bitches," but he might have shared tips and techniques with fellow journalists like Jason Scott Kidd, charged in 2009 with hitting a woman in the face at a Mexican restaurant, Gawker editor Richard "Date Rape Tips" Blakely, arrested for domestic violence, or Boise anchorman andalleged wife beater David Tester.

Often the journalist reacts with petty violence, like animal cruelty, but he or she can quickly graduate to more serious crimes like criminal trespass, theft, extortion, andarson. Some reporters seek release from violent urges through sex crimes likeassaulting hypnotized women, window peeping or public masturbation or bondage acts with underage prostitutes, but with little long term effect. Often the journalist will seek to slake his thirst for violence though bar fights or scuffling with police officers or kicking elderly people in laundromats. The brutality soon moves inside the home, in forms likechild abandonment and spousal abuse including beatings and throwing scalding water.

These are mere warm ups for what often comes next. Emboldened, the reporter begins packing heat and attempts to bring it into a courtroom, like KDKA Pittsburgh journalist Rob Milford, or join the "Mile High Journalist Assault Club" like Toronto TV anchor Colleen Walsh. Left untreated, he or she graduates to the "big leagues" of journalist crime. Examples include TV anchor Elena Skordelli, charged with arranging a murder hit on her producer, accused terrorist and Al-Jazeera reporter Baltasar Garzon, and alleged murderers like reporter Vlado Taneski, Ray Gosling, and TV anchorman Ted Failon.

In many cases, the violence is self-directed in the form of substance abuse. Wallowing in bitterness and self pity, clinging to his J-school memes, the journalist will seek escape in a fog of drugs and alcohol. This path remains only temporarily victimless as the drunk, drug-addled journalist can no longer resist the urge to get behind the wheel of his car. Television anchormen and anchorwomen seem particularly susceptible to this weakness, with recent arrests including South Bend IN anchor Debra Daniel,  Tulsa anchor Jerry Giordano, Chicago anchorman and 2-time DUI loser Walter Jacobsen, Fort Wayne IN anchor Mary Collins, Austin anchor David Scott, Minneapolis anchor Beth McDonough, Mobile AL anchor Bob Solarski, and San Diego anchor Allison Ross. Before you can say "you stay classy, San Diego," the vehicular casualty count begins to skyrocket as innocent bystanders begin falling victim to drunk anchormen like CNN veteran Rick Sanchez and Winston-Salem's Tolly Carr.

As bad as these cases are individually, collectively they represent only the tip of a vast, bloody iceberg of media brutality. Most experts believe that the overwhelming majority of media crimes are never reported. "Think about it," says Egrub. "We are actual relying on reporters to report on the crimes of reporters. All we really know about are the cases other journalists were too incompetent to cover up. For every one of them there are likely dozens lying on the media's cutting room floor."

littlebytesnews's insight:

Yet many of these journalists, are liberals and have the nerve to criticize others when they do something illegal or violent, or even when they are law abiding citizens, as in the case of the Journal News in NY exposing the names and addresses of law abiding gun holders. Does the media think they are above the law?? Is that why David Gregory brought a 30 round magazine clip on the air, even though the police department told him it was illegal to possess one in DC?

Milk prices to soar if Congress ignores farm bill

Milk prices to soar if Congress ignores farm bill | Littlebytesnews Current Events | Scoop.it
Santa, enjoy your milk now: Come January 1, it may cost $8 a gallon

The "dairy cliff" is just the most immediate of what would be gradual price increases on foods across grocery stores if Congress doesn't pass a farm bill to replace the one that expired nearly three months ago. Technically, farm regulations since the end of September have been operating under a 1949 "permanent" law. Because the 2008 law covered all crops planted in 2012, though, and federal funding for many agricultural programs is assured through March 2013, lawmakers have enjoyed a bit of a grace period until Jan. 1, when products like milk could skyrocket to prices based on dairy farm production costs 64 years ago.

But just days before the end of the year, farmers and their bankers - left in the lurch with decisions about next year's crops - are still waiting and hoping for a holiday miracle in Washington. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack might advise they don't hold their breath: After weeks of aggressively campaigning to get the House and Senate Agriculture Committees in a room to hash out the makings of a new five-year plan, Vilsack this week conceded that the passage of a bill by Jan. 1 was unlikely.

Rep. Frank Lucas, R-Okla., have both blamed their parties' leadership for keeping them out of the loop on the best- and worst-case scenarios for a farm bill. Lucas told Politico last month that House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, had indicated to him, however vaguely, that farm legislation -- the urgency for which has largely been ignored by Congress, and the media -- was being strongly considered as part of the deficit reductions necessary to avert the far more publicized "fiscal cliff."

In a statement to CBSNews.com, Stabenow said she's holding out hope that the spending cuts offered in potential farm legislation are appealing to leaders trying to negotiate past the "fiscal cliff." "The farm bill is the only bipartisan deficit reduction bill that passed the Senate this year, and including it in a larger deficit reduction agreement would help the country avoid the fiscal cliff," she said. "Without a 5-year farm bill by the end of the year, milk prices could begin to rise sharply and America's agriculture economy will continue to be significantly impacted."

Attorney General Tom Horne proposes arming one individual in every Arizona school

Attorney General Tom Horne proposes arming one individual in every Arizona school | Littlebytesnews Current Events | Scoop.it
Arizona Attorney General Tom Horne has joined at least three Arizona sheriffs in a proposal to reduce the risk of a repetition of the school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut.

PHOENIX - Arizona Attorney General Tom Horne proposed a plan Wednesday to allow one educator in each school to carry a gun after they receive free firearms training from law enforcement.

The proposal comes less than two weeks after a gunman fatally shot 20 first-graders and six educators during a Dec. 14 rampage at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.

Horne said the program, which would first need legislative action to amend state law, is aimed at reducing the risk of similar shootings in Arizona.

Under the plan, which Horne said is backed by sheriffs in Pinal, Mohave and Apache counties, each public school could designate a principal or educator to keep the gun in a secure, locked location at the facility. It would limit gun-carriers to one per school and would be a voluntary program.

However, Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu came out with his own, much broader plan on Wednesday aimed at training multiple educators per school to carry guns, noting his proposal and Horne's were "the difference between putting your toe in a pool or jumping in."

"And they should not be in a locked box these weapons," Babeu said. "Our schools are not as safe as we think they are, and we need to do something about it."

Some schools around the state already have an armed law enforcement presence through the so-called school resource officer program, but budget constraints have cut it back.

"The ideal solution would be to have an armed police officer in each school," Horne said, echoing calls from the National Rifle Association since the Connecticut shootings.

The next best thing, he said, is to arm an educator, comparing that proposal to allowing pilots to carry guns after the 9/11 terror attacks.

Currently, only Utah and Kansas allow people with concealed weapons permits to carry guns in schools. In the wake of the Connecticut shootings, more than 200 teachers in Utah signed up for free concealed-weapons training being offered Thursday by the Utah Shooting Sports Council.

littlebytesnews's insight:

Sounds good to me...I'm glad to see states like Arizona are starting to take protecting our children in schools more seriously. Sadly it had to take another tragic event such as the one in Newtown, CT to get people to start thinking about it.

Unfortunately too many want to politicize the issue and react with more gun control laws, when in reality we need more secure schools and 'gun free zones' are the problem. These gun free zones are prone to more violence and leaves innocent and defenseless victims as targets. It doesn't matter how fast you fire a weapon, can reload it, nor what type of weapon is used when the victims are unarmed and unable to fight back.

I believe the Newtown shooting incident would have been less tragic if the principal had a gun or one of her staff members did and more lives could have been saved.

According to federal law, schools already have the authority to place armed security in schools, however federal budget cuts have prevented them from doing so in all schools. About 2/3 of schools have armed SRO [school resource officers] or law enforcement in them, but they are mostly at the high school level. Most private schools, like where Obama sends his daughters, have armed security already.

The federal govt recognizes the need for securing our schools to improve the work environment and education environment. US Code Chapter 44 Section B discusses this need

(E) while criminals freely move from State to State, ordinary citizens and foreign visitors may fear to travel to or through certain parts of the country due to concern about violent crime and gun violence, and parents may decline to send their children to school for the same reason; (F) the occurrence of violent crime in school zones has resulted in a decline in the quality of education in our country; (G) this decline in the quality of education has an adverse impact on interstate commerce and the foreign commerce of the United States; (H) States, localities, and school systems find it almost impossible to handle gun-related crime by themselves - even States, localities, and school systems that have made strong efforts to prevent, detect, and punish gun-related crime find their efforts unavailing due in part to the failure or inability of other States or localities to take strong measures; and (I) the Congress has the power, under the interstate commerce clause and other provisions of the Constitution, to enact measures to ensure the integrity and safety of the Nation's schools by enactment of this subsection. It is also recognized that states can provide the necessary security they feel is needed including training staff or trained former law enforcement, military or a contractor to provide armed security:(B) Subparagraph (A) does not apply to the possession of a firearm - (i) on private property not part of school grounds; (ii) if the individual possessing the firearm is licensed to do so by the State in which the school zone is located or a political subdivision of the State, and the law of the State or political subdivision requires that, before an individual obtains such a license, the law enforcement authorities of the State or political subdivision verify that the individual is qualified under law to receive the license; (iii) that is - (I) not loaded; and (II) in a locked container, or a locked firearms rack that is on a motor vehicle; (iv) by an individual for use in a program approved by a school in the school zone; (v) by an individual in accordance with a contract entered into between a school in the school zone and the individual or an employer of the individual; (vi) by a law enforcement officer acting in his or her official capacity; or (vii) that is unloaded and is possessed by an individual while traversing school premises for the purpose of gaining access to public or private lands open to hunting, if the entry on school premises is authorized by school authorities. Therefore, it is time schools start providing the type of security advocated by the NRA and former President Clinton after Columbine and time to take the need for armed security more seriously. Ideally I'd like to have at least one armed guard at each entry/exit, but since that might not be feasible, at least two armed security guards and one staff member, such as the princpal should be trained and armed to handle a situation with a shooter on school grounds. I'd also like to see schools equipped with surveillance cameras in which someone is assigned to watch all activity surrounding the school to make sure nobody is entering the school who should not be there and require everyone to check in/out through one entry&exit. While all this sounds expensive, I think most parents would rather their childs schools are secure rather than 'gun free zones' and that they have a chance at surviving should some crazed nut attempt to enter the school. As I have previously mentioned, some of the costs for covering any training or security could come from teacher's union dues, where unions are supposed to provide for better/safer work environments for students and teachers. In addition, plain clothes parents who are trained and willing to act as armed securitiy and eyes/ears could help to deter any potential attacks or at risk students.

Why the Jews Vote for the Democrats

Why the Jews Vote for the Democrats | Littlebytesnews Current Events | Scoop.it
Why the Jews Vote for the Democrats, anti-Semitism, totalitarianism, Russian czars, Holocaust, Israel, Six Day War, 1960s counterculture, Exile behavior, Haym Solomon, Netanyahu

When the Great Depression struck in the 1930s, the Jews, the same as pretty much everyone else in the United States followed the “Hope and Change” candidate of that time, Franklin Delano Roosevelt into the modern Democratic Party of handouts and government spending, and have effectively never left. Even blacks began to leave the GOP, which had been the party that had freed the slaves. For the Jews, FDR promised equality in addition to economic opportunity with non-discriminatory New Deal hiring. That was a big deal considering that most big corporations in the United States would not hire Jews into the 1960s and 1970s. By the 1940s and 1950s, the Jews had become an important minority voting bloc that could swing both state and nationalelections. But Jews who vote Democrat in the 21st Century are effectively voting for FDR, just as their great-grandparents did.

After the Holocaust in Europe, anti-Semitism diminished in the United States as racial prejudice became a less-acceptable attitude. Then Little Israel, the State of Israel, scored a dramatic “Six-Day” victory against the Arabs in 1967 and in so doing Americans saw a new Jew, confident, strong and an ally, and Israel an outpost of liberty in the Cold War. In 1965, Vatican II removed the charge of deicide against the Jews from Catholic Church canon and Jews could no longer be hated as part of the Catholic Church’s teachings. The Jews since the Second World War were being welcomed into American life at an unprecedented level. Barriers to Jewish integration into America were crumbling.

From a deeper perspective, Jewish Democrats are demonstrating “Exile” behavior. Exile behavior is identifying with your oppressor and looking to your oppressor for solutions. In Biblical times, it was said that 80 percent of the Jews that were slaves in Egypt remained in Egypt rather than make the difficult journey to freedom and liberty to the Holy Land with Moses. After the Jews established their own country in the Land of Israel, they had two Holy Temples destroyed, and subsequently they have been in exile for the last 2000 years. Part of that exile has included relying on governments to protect them fromChristian anti-Semitism, protection that often never materialized. As they say in the State of Israel today, a Jewish country with Jewish leadership, “You can take the Jew out of the Exile, but you can’t take the Exile out of the Jew.” So in the United States, with the exception of the Orthodox Jews, who identify with conservative family values, Jews that vote Democrat are essentially expressing more faith in government than in Divine Providence.

However, many less-blind Jews who voted for Obama in 2008, had buyers remorse and weren’t so comfortable with the out-of-control spending and Obama’s tone on Israel. While these Jewish Democrats probably wouldn’t assert that Obama is anti-Israel, they do question whether he holds the Jewish State in much esteem. It is significant to know that Obama is very unpopular in Israel and he has never visited there during his presidency.

So at the end of the day, for the Jews who vote Democrat, they live out their religion by being a liberal and voting Democrat.

Shot For Being White

Shot For Being White | Littlebytesnews Current Events | Scoop.it

20-year-old Joshua Proutey, who was shot for being white by a gang of four blacks who were out targeting white people who were “bound to have money” – as you reported in your story on this for WND.com.

Tell us what happened.

Flaherty: Four black people in Wilmington, North Carolina needed money for marijuana and traveling. So they set out to get it by robbing white people.  They tried to break into a house, but were seen, so they fled. They stalked a woman through downtown Wilmington, but she escaped. Finally they came upon a 20-year-old college kid named Joshua. They took his money, cell phone and sandwich. Then he asked them to only take his money and not his ID because he explained to them it was hard to replace. Then they shot and killed him. The reason I wrote about this for WND.com and for my book, is not that it is special, but because racial violence is increasingly common and most media ignore it.

FP: What do you mean it is not “special”?

Flaherty: Racial mob violence and lawlessness ignored by the media and downplayed by the police is now so common I could write a story about it every day.

My backlog is enormous. There have been recent examples of black mob violence and lawlessness in Norfolk, Los Angeles, Tacoma, Seattle, Chicago, Philadelphia, New Haven, Gaithersburg, England, Ireland, Canada, Baltimore, Phoenix. We have black mob violence against gays, women, Asians, and on and on and on. These are all in addition to more than 400 cases I have already reported from 80 cities around the country.

Flaherty: The most dangerous thing liberals do to encourage black mob violence is create a sense of victimization: That somehow people are somehow entitled to commit violence because they are members of an oppressed, protected group. That of course is the actual language of affirmative action: Some people belong to protected minority groups.

In this case, one of the killers from behind bars said he did not like being stereotyped as a tough guy. The fact that even an admitted 17-year old killer from behind bars uses this language of victimization is indicative of how widespread this attitude is.

Many look at black mob violence and other high rates of black crime and explain it away, saying it is not surprising because of 400 years of oppression. So they switch it around: The predator becomes victim. And the victim is predator. I see this all the time, from police, reporters, ministers, community leaders, you name it.  To point this out is to risk being labeled a racist. So many do not.

When the President intervened in the case of Henry “Skip” Gates and Harvard (remember the beer summit?) and the Trayvon Martin case, he may have contributed to that feeling of victimization.

FP: Where are Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton? How come we are not hearing from them about this murder of Joshua? They are against racism aren’t they?

Flaherty: Many black leaders scorn those who pay attention to this black mob violence — often directed at white people — because they say violence and lawlessness has been an every day fact of life in black neighborhoods for a long time. It is only now that it is seeping out of these neighborhoods and into other places that white people are paying attention, they say. Lots of examples of that in the book.  Jackson, Sharpton and others, of course, like to say that black people are not capable of racism. They are the victims of it.

But White Girl Bleed a Lot is not about explanations or solutions. The contribution of White Girl Bleed a Lot is to catalogue this epidemic and say: “This is happening and you cannot deny it any longer.”

littlebytesnews's insight:

But you'll never hear Obama, Al Sharpton, Jessie Jackson or the mainstream media making a big story out of these incidents...even as the black on black crime rises in cities like Chicago, mob violence against whites has also increased.

BREAKING – EXCLUSIVE: NY Paper Publishes Legal Gun Permit Holders Names in Print & Online!

BREAKING – EXCLUSIVE: NY Paper Publishes Legal Gun Permit Holders Names in Print & Online! | Littlebytesnews Current Events | Scoop.it

December 23rd 2012 a New York Newspaper Printed the names and addresses of every Licensed Pistol Permit holder in two Countiesand another County is being posted shortly! This is a massive privacy breach and the latest in a series of over the top emotional reactions to the latest shooting tragedy in Sandy Hook CT meant to intimidate the lawful and  prey on peoples fears to exploit the gun grabbing agenda.

In an article title “The gun owner next door: What you don’t know about the weapons in your neighborhood” the paper linked to an interactive map titled: “Map: Where are the gun permits in your neighborhood?” where you can search neighborhoods to see who received a legal permit to own a hand gun license listed by name and address.

Threats from local Government:

The New York Times Reported last week  that Governor Cuomo of New York said:

“Confiscation could be an option. Mandatory sale to the state could be an option. Permitting could be an option — keep your gun but permit it,”

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg had this to say about banning rifles:

“The president, through his leadership, could get a Bill like that (banning assault weapons) through Congress… That’s his job,” Bloomberg said.

This is a invasion of privacy that does nothing to safeguard the law abiding from the criminal element.   One barking dog can herd a thousand sheep to be sheared.   This appears to be an attempt to abrogate the Bill of Rights.   If Paul Revere had the internet, he would not have needed a horse.  Please share this with all of your fellow Americans who are alarmed by a government encroachment, aided and abetted by propagandist masquerading as objective journalist.

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!  If you are appalled and alarmed at this abuse of power:

The best response to the gun grabbing agenda driven  is for Americans nation-wide to purchase a firearm today!

I am calling on all Americans,   Constitutionalists,  Tea Party Patriots and 2nd Amendment Activists, to make their voices heard in NY and around the country immediately.    The New York City Council just published a report recommending blatant infringements and restraints on the Bill of Rights!!

Contact the Editors at LOHUD.COM  and cancel your subscription and let their advertisers know how you feel about it.   This is the power of the 1st Amendment in your hands that empowers you to preserve the safeguard afforded us by the 2nd Amendment to the Bill of Rights.

littlebytesnews's insight:

Our freedoms have never been under more threat than this time. Our 1st amendment rights to religious liberty and free speech have been threatened under this administration and now the 2nd amendment is under attack. It's time to take a stand and let them know that this wreckless invasion of privacy will not be tolerated. It endangers not only the gun owners themselves but the public at large because now thieves know what homes to target to gain access to weapons illegally. These weapons can then be used in criminal activity. Thankfully most law-abiding gun owners are also well trained and prepared for a home invasion, but this puts them and their families at greater risk for harassment and theft. Take a stand and share this widely but also contact those responsible for this invasion of privacy.

This also puts those who are unarmed at greater risk because thieves can now target those homes who are left vulnerable to theft and other crimes because the perpetrators now know who is armed and who isn't!

Gun-free zones provide false sense of security--if 'a good guy with a gun' can save just one life, it's worth it!

Gun-free zones provide false sense of security--if 'a good guy with a gun' can save just one life, it's worth it! | Littlebytesnews Current Events | Scoop.it
One of the interesting characteristics of mass shootings is that they generally occur in places where firearms are banned: malls, schools, etc.

STORY HIGHLIGHTSMass shootings generally occur in places where firearms are banned.Gun-free zones are premised on a lie: that murderers will follow rules. As gun ownership has expanded over the past decade, crime has gone down.

"After a shooting spree," author William Burroughs once said, "they always want to take the guns away from the people who didn't do it." Burroughs continued: "I sure as hell wouldn't want to live in a society where the only people allowed guns are the police and the military."

Plenty of people — especially among America's political and journalistic classes — feel differently. They'd be much more comfortable seeing ordinary Americans disarmed. And whenever there is a mass shooting, or other gun incident that snags the headlines, they do their best to exploit the tragedy and push for laws that would, well, take the guns away from the people who didn't do it.

There are a lot of problems with this approach, but one of the most significant is this one: It doesn't work. One of the interesting characteristics of mass shootings is that they generally occur in places where firearms are banned: malls, schools, etc. That was the finding of a famous 1999 study by John Lott of the University of Maryland and William Landes of the University of Chicago, and it appears to have been borne out by experience since then as well.

Policies making areas "gun free" provide a sense of safety to those who engage in magical thinking, but in practice, of course, killers aren't stopped by gun-free zones. As always, it's the honest people — the very ones you want to be armed — who tend to obey the law.

The Supreme Court, of course, has recognized that under the Constitution, honest people have a right to defend themselves with firearms, inside and outside the home, something that the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit recently acknowledged in striking down Illinois' gun-carry ban.

Given that gun-free zones seem to be a magnet for mass shooters, maybe we should be working to shrink or eliminate them, rather than expand them. As they say, if it saves just one life, it's worth it.

littlebytesnews's insight:

I agree completely with the points made in this article...it's too bad those who think gun free zones work and more gun regulations will stop crazed and criminal minds from breaking the law are forgetting these people don't care about laws!
