Murder suspect reportedly holding 6-year-old boy he took off school bus
littlebytesnews's insight:

Praying for the 6yro little boys safe return. The guy should have been kept in jail when he threatened neighbors last week for supposedly leaving holes in the road near his house. He shot a gun at them and was only charged with menace??!! This is the problem with the legal system and the mentally ill. He should have been kept in jail and referred for a mental evaluation. Anytime someone makes a death threat it should be taken more seriously, especially when a weapon is involved!!

He was supposed to appear in court today, yet they let him go for threatening the life of his neighbors!! Why did they let him out??

Bus shooting suspect barricaded inside bunker;unclear if 6yro he took from bus is with him

Bus shooting suspect barricaded inside bunker;unclear if 6yro he took from bus is with him | Littlebytesnews Current Events |
The man who is believed to be holed up in the Midland City hostage situation following a shooting on a school bus is Jimmy Lee Dykes, 65, who was scheduled to be in court Wednesday for a bench trial on a menacing charge.

James Edward Davis, Jr., who lives near Dykes on Private Road 1539, said Dykes pulled a gun on him and his daughter on Dec. 10 after Dykes believed Davis had driven in Dykes' yard. Davis said he reported Dykes to the Dale County Sheriff's Department. Dykes was arrested Dec. 22 and charged with menacing.

Davis said Dykes has lived at a residence on Private Road 1539 for about a year. He said Dykes constructed a "bunker" behind the residence with a PVC pipe leading to the back end of the residence.

"It's the craziest thing. He will be outside in his yard digging dirt at 2:30 in the morning," Davis, Jr. said.

Davis, Jr., said police were evacuating houses near Dykes' residence Tuesday evening.

The suspect, who has not been identified by law enforcement, is reported to be inside an underground bunker by his home, located near Destiny Church off U.S. 231. It is not clear whether the 6-year-old child taken from the bus after the shooting is in the bunker with him.

The incident began a little before 4 p.m. on Tuesday when the gunman got onto a school bus near Destiny Church.

Michael Creel, a neighbor of the suspected shooter, said he went outside after his sister heard gunshots. He saw children running away from the bus and they pointed in the direction the shooter ran.

Creel said a little girl told him the shooter came onto the bus, demanded two children between the ages of 6 and 8 come with him. The bus driver refused and he shot the driver, the little girl told Creel. The shooter then took off with one of the kids.

Scary hostage situation...I pray the six year old, I believe a boy, is safe and unharmed and that police are able to get him away from this nut. The guy should have been kept in jail after threatening the neighbor a few weeks before! He isn't just a menace he's obviously crazy!!

Police Chief: Within A Generation, Guns Will Be Taken Off The Streets | Littlebytesnews Current Events |

According to San Diego 6, Lansdowne said that it may take a generation but guns will eventually be taken off the streets through new laws like Senator Dianne Feinstein's proposed assault weapons ban:

"Chief Lansdowne, who plays an active role in the western region of the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) association, said it may take a generation but guns will eventually be taken off the streets through new laws like Senator Diane Feinstein's proposed assault weapons ban legislation. Some of the items his organization is addressing include; a ban on assault weapons, restricting high-capacity magazines, closing loopholes that allow firearm sales between private owners without background checks, and implementing much stricter background checks by using a comprehensive database."

Lansdowne called for tougher gun laws in an interview with KPBS, and praised President Obama for his initiative on gun control.

"I could not be more supportive of the president for taking the position he has," he said.

Whiny Obama says:if gun control isn't passed it will be because of 'insular Republicans who ignore public opinion'

Whiny Obama says:if gun control isn't passed it will be because of 'insular Republicans who ignore public opinion' | Littlebytesnews Current Events |
He specifically called out Republicans whose districts have been specially shaped to keep like-minds in and effectively secures they won’t be challenged for their seat in Congress.

President Obama said that gun control reforms may not happen because of Republican congressmen who take the conservative views of their specific constituents rather than listening to public opinion.

He specifically called out Republicans whose districts have been specially shaped to keep like-minds in and effectively secures they won’t  be challenged for their seat in Congress.

‘The House Republican majority is made up mostly of members who are in sharply gerrymandered districts that are very safely Republican and may not feel compelled to pay attention to broad-based public opinion, because what they're really concerned about is the opinions of their specific Republican constituencies,’ the President said.

Tough to enact: The President has already signed 23 executive actions regarding gun control (pictured) but he explained that a Congressional action may be difficult because of Republicans who ignore general opinion

As part of a wide-ranging interview for The New Republic magazine, Mr Obama said that he feels confident that a majority of the country will agree on legislation that is being developed for stricter gun control laws in the wake of the Newtown elementary school shooting.

That, however, may not mean much.

littlebytesnews's insight:

Boo hoo...Obama can't get around the Constitution so he likes to blame Republicans in the House. Yet many DEMs in the Senate are likely unwilling to go against the 2nd amendment to appease him and lose their lifetime seats in the Senate with all the perks they get. This is Obama's last year as President, he has less to lose than many of them, so pleasing their constituents will be a bigger priority. Obama continues to think because he won re-election that the majority of people support his policies, yet that is NOT the case when it comes to his 23 new executive wishes and Sen Feinstein's proposed gun control bill which would ban at least 150 weapons.

Horrific:North Korean parents 'eat their children' after being driven mad by hunger in famine-hit pariah state | Littlebytesnews Current Events |

Up to 10,000 people feared dead after 'hidden famine' in farming provincesDrought and confiscated food contribute to desperate shortage, reports sayReports of men digging up corpses for food and murdering children

A starving man in North Korea has been executed after murdering his two children for food, reports from inside the secretive state claim.

A 'hidden famine' in the farming provinces of North and South Hwanghae is believed to have killed up to 10,000 people and there are fears that incidents of cannibalism have risen.

The grim story is just one to emerge as residents battle starvation after a drought hit farms and shortages were compounded by party officials confiscating food.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has spent vast sums of money on two rocket launches despite reports of desperate food shortages in the country and concerns that 10,000 people have died in a famine

Undercover reporters from Asia Press told the Sunday Times that one man dug up his grandchild's corpse and ate it. Another, boiled his own child for food.

Despite reports of the widespread famine, Kim Jong Un, 30, has spent vast sums of money on two rocket launches in recent months.

There are fears he is planning a nuclear test in protest at a UN Security Council punishment for the recent rocket launches and to counter what it sees as US hostility.

One informant was quoted as saying: 'In my village in May a man who killed his own two children and tried to eat them was executed by a firing squad.'

Cannibalism has also been reported in the vast network of prison camps inside North Korea, such as Camp 22, pictured, where 50,000 are believed to be imprisoned

The Sunday Times also quoted an official of the ruling Korean Worker's party as saying: 'In a village in Chongdan county, a man who went mad with hunger boiled his own child, ate his flesh and was arrested.

United Nations officials visited the area during a state-sponsored trip but local reporters said it is unlikely they were shown the famine-hit areas.

It has not the first time that reports of cannibalism have come out of the country.

In May last year, the South Korean state-run Korean Institute for National Unification said that one man was executed after eating part of a colleague and then trying to sell the remains as mutton.

One man killed and ate a girl and a third report of cannibalism was recorded from 2011.

Another man was executed in May after murdering 11 people and selling the bodies as pork.

littlebytesnews's insight:

This is horrific and believable considering the droughts they have had and how oppressed they are by their communist government. How sad such inhumanity goes on in our world today and there is little we can do about it.

Max Minard's curator insight, May 26, 2015 9:30 PM

This article outlines the horrific event of North Korean parents eating their children out of famine and hunger. As the article states, Kim Jong Un spends millions on rocket launches while his people are starving. His priorities are set on military advancements rather than a thriving nation with sustainable resources. Famine has started to spread throughout North Korea as the nation is unable to successfully provide food to all of its citizens. I personally think that this report it outrageous and I can't believe that Kim Jong Un could be so blindsided by military innovations instead of feeding his own people. Famine has become an increasing issue not only;y in North Korea, but also in other areas around the globe. Even though there is enough food to feed everybody on the planet, some people are still just unable to access these resources, such as people overtaken by a corrupt government.

Supreme Court Rulings Favor the Second Amendment&Limit Federal Government

Supreme Court Rulings Favor the Second Amendment&Limit Federal Government | Littlebytesnews Current Events |

Some state and local gun-control measures already have died over the past four and a half years, done in by the high court’s 2008 ruling that recognized expansive constitutional protections for firearm ownership. Similar Second Amendment restraints will limit the ambitions of the Obama gun task force and its Capitol Hill counterparts.

“The Supreme Court has decided that the amendment confers a right to bear arms for self-defense, which is as important outside the home as inside,” Judge Richard Posner of the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals noted in a ruling last week.

Some additional gun restrictions, however, certainly will survive legal challenge. The Supreme Court has said that “laws imposing conditions and qualifications” on firearms sales may be permitted. This might allow, for instance, more background-check requirements. The court further indicated in 2008 that “an important limitation on the right to keep and carry arms” extends to “dangerous and unusual weapons.”

That might include military firearms such as the M16 assault rifle, which the Supreme Court specifically cited. Adam Lanza, who killed 20 children and six women last Friday at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., used a Bushmaster AR-15-style rifle, a civilian version of the M16.

The Supreme Court’s 2008 decision, however, has confining power. Posner’s ruling last week underscored that. His opinion struck down an Illinois law that prohibited most individuals from carrying firearms in public. An outspoken conservative intellectual, Posner previously had criticized Justice Antonin Scalia’s reasoning in the high court’s decision. Like it or not, though, judges now must abide by it.

Or, as Posner put it, “the Supreme Court’s interpretation of the Second Amendment . . . compels us” to strike down the Illinois law.

“If the government is going to intrude on a fundamental right, they are going to have to have a compelling governmental interest and the law will have to be fitted to achieve those ends,” San Jose, Calif., attorney Donald Kilmer said in an interview. He represents the Calguns Foundation, a California advocacy group for firearms owners, in lawsuits challenging gun laws.

In 2010, an appellate court upheld a federal law that prohibits ownership of guns with rubbed-out serial numbers. Last year, a conservative Republican on the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals wrote a decision upholding Washington’s ban on assault weapons and large-capacity magazines.

“The prohibition of semi-automatic rifles and large-capacity magazines does not effectively disarm individuals or substantially affect their ability to defend themselves,” said Judge Douglas Ginsburg, who was appointed by President Ronald Reagan.

littlebytesnews's insight:

Interesting rulings on the second amendment...for the most part the courts found that banning the sell of weapons or forcing individuals to show why they could own a gun have been ruled unconstitutional. However, a GOP judge in a DC Circuit Court of Appeals in 2010 found that semi-automatic rifles and large capacity magazines could be banned because it doesn't disarm individuals completely or affect their ability to defend themselves. Yet it does infringe on the right to bear arms and the ability to defend yourself if you are out gunned by an intruder/criminal??

Around world, gun rules, and results, vary wildly--where there are more restrictions there is often more crime&less freedoms

Around world, gun rules, and results, vary wildly--where there are more restrictions there is often more crime&less freedoms | Littlebytesnews Current Events |

OOI, Japan (AP) -- After a tragedy like the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, it's a statistic that is always trotted out. Compared to just about anywhere else with a stable, developed government - and many countries without even that - the more than 11,000 gun-related killings each year in the United States are simply off the charts.

To be sure, there are nations that are worse. But others see fewer gun homicide deaths in one year than the 27 people killed Dec. 14 in Newtown, Connecticut.

As Americans debate gun laws, people on both sides point to the experiences of other countries to support their arguments. Here's a look at two success stories - with two very different ways of thinking about gun ownership - and one cautionary tale.

In this country, guns are few and far between. And so is gun violence. Guns were used in only seven murders in Japan - a nation of about 130 million - in all of 2011, the most recent year for official statistics. According to police, more people - nine - were murdered with scissors.

Though its gun ownership rates are tiny compared to the United States, Japan has more than 120,000 registered gun owners and more than 400,000 registered firearms. So why is there so little gun violence?

"We have a very different way of looking at guns in Japan than people in the United States," said Tsutomu Uchida, who runs the Kanagawa Ohi Shooting Range, an Olympic-style training center for rifle enthusiasts. "In the U.S., people believe they have a right to own a gun. In Japan, we don't have that right. So our point of departure is completely different."

Treating gun ownership as a privilege and not a right leads to some important policy differences.

First, anyone who wants to get a gun must demonstrate a valid reason why they should be allowed to do so. Under longstanding Japanese policy, there is no good reason why any civilian should have a handgun, so - aside from a few dozen accomplished competitive shooters - they are completely banned.

Rifle ownership is allowed for the general public, but tightly controlled.

Applicants first must go to their local police station and declare their intent. After a lecture and a written test comes range training, then a background check. Police likely will even talk to the applicant's neighbors to see if he or she is known to have a temper, financial troubles or an unstable household. A doctor must sign a form saying the applicant has not been institutionalized and is not epileptic, depressed, schizophrenic, alcoholic or addicted to drugs.

Gun owners must tell the police where in the home the gun will be stored. It must be kept under lock and key, must be kept separate from ammunition, and preferably chained down. It's legal to transport a gun in the trunk of a car to get to one of the country's few shooting ranges, but if the driver steps away from the vehicle and gets caught, that's a violation.

Gun-rights advocates in the United States often cite Switzerland as an example of relatively liberal regulation going hand-in-hand with low gun crime.

The country's 8 million people own about 2.3 million firearms. But firearms were used in just 24 Swiss homicides in 2009, a rate of about 0.3 per 100,000 inhabitants. The U.S. rate that year was about 11 times higher.

Unlike in the United States, where guns are used in the majority of murders, in Switzerland only a quarter of murders involve firearms. The most high-profile case in recent years occurred when a disgruntled petitioner shot dead 14 people at a city council meeting in 2001.

Experts say Switzerland's low gun-crime figures are influenced by the fact that most firearms are military rifles issued to men when they join the country's conscript army. As Switzerland cut the size of its army in recent decades, gun crime fell, too.

The key issue is how many people have access to a weapon, not the total number of weapons owned in a country, said Martin Killias, a criminologist at the University of Zurich. "Switzerland's criminals, for example, aren't very well armed compared with street criminals in the United States."

So how about a country that actually bans guns?

Since 2003, Brazil has come close to fitting that description. Only police, people in high-risk professions and those who can prove their lives are threatened are eligible to receive gun permits. Anyone caught carrying a weapon without a permit faces up to four years on prison.

But Brazil also tops the global list for gun murders.

According to a United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime study in 2011, 34,678 people were murdered by firearms in Brazil in 2008, compared to 34,147 in 2007. The numbers for both years represent a homicide-by-firearm rate of 18 per 100,000 inhabitants - more than five times higher than the U.S. rate.

Violence is so endemic in Brazil that few civilians would even consider trying to arm themselves for self-defense. Vast swaths of cities like Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro are slums long dominated by powerful drug gangs, who are often better armed than the police. Brazilian officials admit guns flow easily over the nation's long, porous Amazon jungle border.

littlebytesnews's insight:

In the US we have a higher rate of crime than most of these countries, other than perhaps Brazil because we have a growing rate of gang and drug violence. But also more people are likely to be on psychotropic drugs in the US then in other countries where they might not get the medical care they need and other times there are cultural differences. The bottom line is that in the US gun ownership is a God given right protected in our Constitution that says we have the right to form a militia to protect us against tyranny, but also that right includes protecting ourselves from criminals and crazy people, as well as protecting our families. Owning a gun is a right, but it is also a privilege for law abiding citizens. If you are crazy, have legally been declared mentally incompetent or dangerous, or a felon you lose the right to bear arms legally. However, no laws will ever stop criminals from stealing and buying guns on the black market as they do in Japan.

We have a high rate of gun violence in cities like Chicago, where they have some of the toughest gun restrictions in the country. Proving that keeping guns out of criminals hands is not effective when it results in making it harder for citizens to protect themselves.

The bottom line is that you can't legislate morality and people should have the right to protect and defend themselves and those who choose not to utilize that right have the right not to buy a gun, but those who chose to utilize that right should not have limits placed on them if they are a law abiding citizen.

They may be moving reporters back in the event somethign happens that they don't want on air.

SWAT team surrounding area with police, but nobody moving in urgency.

The AP reports:

The gunman, identified by neighbors as Jimmy Lee Dykes, a 65-year-old retired truck driver, was known as "the crazy man" of the neighborhood, a paranoid and combative man who once beat a dog to death with a lead pipe, threatened to shoot children for setting foot on his property and patrolled his yard at night with a flashlight and a shotgun.

He was supposed to appear in court Wednesday to answer charges he shot at his neighbors in a dispute last month over a speed bump.

The standoff dragged on through the night and into the afternoon Wednesday after the gunman boarded a stopped school bus in the small town of Midland City on Tuesday afternoon, authorities said. Sheriff Wally Olsen said the man shot the driver when he refused to hand over a 6-year-old child. The gunman then took the kindergartener away.

"As far as we know there is no relation at all. He just wanted a child for a hostage situation," said Michael Senn, a church pastor who helped comfort the traumatized children after the attack.

Dykes was believed to be holed up in an underground bunker of the sort used to take shelter from a tornado, County Coroner Woodrow Hilboldt said.

The bus driver, Charles Albert Poland Jr., 66, was hailed by locals as a hero who gave his life to protect 21 students.

Mike and Patricia Smith, who live across the street from Dykes and whose two children were on the bus when the shooting happened, said their youngsters had a run-in with him about 10 months ago.

"My bulldogs got loose and went over there," Patricia Smith said. "The children went to get them. He threatened to shoot them if they came back."

"He's very paranoid," her husband said. "He goes around in his yard at night with a flashlight and shotgun."

"Everybody up the hill tried to avoid him," he said.

Patricia Smith said her children told her what happened on the bus: Two other children had just been dropped off and the Smith children were next. Dykes stepped onto the bus and grabbed the door so the driver couldn't close it. Dykes told the driver he wanted two boys, 6 to 8 years old, without saying why.

According to Smith, Dykes started down the aisle of the bus and the driver put his arm out to block him. Dykes fired four shots at Poland with a handgun, Smith said.

"He did give his life, saving children," Mike Smith said.

Patricia Smith said her daughter, a high school senior, began corralling the other children and headed for the back of the bus while Dykes and the driver were arguing. Later, Smith's son ran inside his house, telling his mother: "The crazy man across the street shot the bus driver and Mr. Poland won't wake up."

Patricia Smith ran over to the bus and saw the driver slumped over in his seat. Her daughter used another child's cellphone to call 911.

Another neighbor, Ronda Wilbur, said Dykes beat her 120-pound dog with a lead pipe for coming onto his side of the dirt road. The dog died a week later.

"He said his only regret was he didn't beat him to death all the way," Wilbur said. She called animal control, who came out and talked to Dykes, but nothing else happened. "If a man can kill a dog, and beat it with a lead pipe and brag about it, it's nothing until it's going to be people."

Court records showed Dykes had been scheduled to appear in court Wednesday morning to face a charge of menacing some neighbors as they drove by his house weeks ago.

Claudia Davis said he yelled and fired shots at her, her son and her baby grandson over damage Dykes claimed their pickup truck did to a makeshift speed bump in the dirt road. No one was hurt.

"Before this happened, I would see him at several places and he would just stare a hole through me," Davis said. "On Monday I saw him at a laundromat and he seen me when I was getting in my truck, and he just stared and stared and stared at me."

Bus shooting suspect barricaded inside bunker;unclear if 6yro he took from bus is with him

littlebytesnews's curator insight, February 1, 2013 12:08 PM

Poor little boy is still being held by this 'crazy man'. I sure pray he is still safe and unharmed. Reports are that he's been crying for his parents since he was abducted for three days by the nutcase who shot and killed the bus driver.

He has a history of violent behavior, paranoia and has threatened to shoot neighbors before just for going near his property or supposedly damaging a speed bump. We don't know why he is doing what he's doing other than him being a paranoid nutcase. He was expected to go to court on Wednesday because he was charged with 'menancing' neighbors when he threatened to shoot them....sadly in AL this was considered a misdemeanor and he was released on bail. Someone like that should have been a red flag and sent for a mental evaluation and kept in jail. Anytime someone threatens others with death or harm they are no longer safe for society and should be taken seriously as a danger to the public!! This is one example of the failure of our legal system and the need to recognize those with mental illness, especially when they show signs of violent behavior, which he has!! He killed another neighbors dog before with a lead pipe! As we know, many serial killers and sociopaths start out killing animals before they move on to killing people.

May God bless and protect little Ethan and comfort him as he longs for his family. My youngest is his age and I can't imagine what he must be going through and how his parents are feeling. It just breaks my heart each day this hostage situation goes on. Why can't these nuts just leave innocent people alone!!?? Why can't they take their own lives or go into a bunker or whatever on their own!!?? I really hope he lets this little boy go before he causes more emotional harm and God forbid physical harm. It is reported that the little boys name is Ethan and has been crying for days for his family, but was given needed medicine and coloring books...I pray the nutcase is giving him the proper dosage of medicine and treating the little boy with kindness rather than anger and violence. How heart breaking....God please save this little boy!!

MIDLAND CITY, Ala. –  More than three days after he allegedly shot dead a school bus driver, grabbed a 5-year-old child and slipped into an underground bunker in the rural U.S., Jimmy Lee Dykes was showing no signs Friday of turning himself over to police.

Hostage negotiators spoke into a narrow ventilation pipe leading into the bunker, trying to talk the 65-year-old, said to hold anti-government views, into freeing the boy. One local official said the child had been crying for his parents.

Dykes, described by neighbors as threatening and violent, is accused of pulling the boy at random from the bus Tuesday and killing the driver who tried to protect the 21 children aboard. The gunman and the boy were holed up in a small underground room on his property that authorities likened to a tornado shelter, not uncommon in the rural South.

A state lawmaker said the shelter has electricity, food and TV, and there were signs that the standoff along a dirt road could continue for some time.

"The three past days have not been easy on anybody," Dale County Sheriff Wally Olson said late Thursday. He said authorities' primary goal was to get the boy home safely.

"There's no reason to believe the child has been harmed," Olson added.

James Arrington, police chief of the neighboring town of Pinckard, said the captor has been sleeping and told negotiators that he has spent long periods in the shelter before.

"He will have to give up sooner or later because (authorities) are not leaving," Arrington said. "It's pretty small, but he's been known to stay in there eight days."

Midland City Mayor Virgil Skipper said he has visited the boy's parents.

"He's crying for his parents," Skipper said. "They are holding up good. They are praying and asking all of us to pray with them."

Lawmaker Steve Clouse said the boy's mother told him her child has Asperger's syndrome, an autism-like disorder, as well as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD. Police have been delivering medication to him through the pipe, he said.

Activity around the bunker picked up early Friday when a team in military-style uniforms, many with weapons, got out of a van and moved into a staging area. One appeared to be dog handler.

Dykes was known in the neighborhood as a menacing figure who neighbors said once beat a dog to death with a lead pipe, threatened to shoot children for setting foot on his property and patrolled his yard at night with a flashlight and an assault rifle.

Arrington confirmed that Dykes held anti-government views, as described by multiple neighbors: "He's against the government -- starting with Obama on down."

"He doesn't like law enforcement or the government telling him what to do," the police chief said. "He's just a loner."

No motive has been discussed by investigators, but the police chief said the FBI had evidence suggesting it could be considered a hate crime. Federal authorities have not released any details about the standoff or the investigation.

Dykes had been scheduled to appear in court Wednesday to answer charges he shot at his neighbors in a dispute last month. Neighbor Claudia Davis said he yelled and fired shots at her, her son and her baby grandson over damage Dykes claimed their truck did to a makeshift speed bump in the dirt road. No one was hurt.

The son, James Davis Jr., believes Tuesday's shooting was connected to the court date. "I believe he thought I was going to be in court and he was going to get more charges than the menacing, which he deserved, and he had a bunch of stuff to hide and that's why he did it."

A neighbor directly across the street, Brock Parrish, said Dykes usually wore overalls and glasses, and his posture was hunched-over. He said Dykes lived in a small camping trailer and patrolled his lawn at night, walking from corner to corner with a flashlight and an assault rifle.

Court records showed Dykes was arrested in Florida in 1995 for improper exhibition of a weapon, but the misdemeanor was dismissed. The circumstances of the arrest were not detailed in his criminal record. He was also arrested for marijuana possession in 2000.

The suspect and child, who by all accounts did not know each other, then disappeared into an underground bunker on the man's property in southeastern Alabama that is said to be equipped with electricity and several weeks' worth of supplies.

The shooting and hostage-taking happened as a national debate rages over gun violence, especially in schools, after a gunman shot dead 20 students and six staff members at a Connecticut elementary school in December.

Law enforcement negotiators have continued to communicate with the man identified by neighbors as 65-year-old Jimmy Lee Dykes. Officials said they believed the child was unharmed.

Michael Senn, a pastor who lives near the private dirt road that runs onto Dykes' property, told the Dothan Eagle newspaper that authorities had been able to maintain contact with Dykes through some sort of pipe, possibly made of PVC, leading into the bunker.

"They've been talking to him pretty regularly," Senn said.

Law enforcement officials have offered few details about the standoff and have not officially released the names of the suspect or the child.

But homemade signs seen around the town identify the boy as Ethan. A school official said his sixth birthday is next week.

Messages such as "Please release Ethan" and "Pray 4 Ethan" were tacked up outside the town hall, where a somber candlelight vigil on Thursday night drew about 100 people.

WTH? Delaware attorney general strips county sheriffs of arrest powers!!

WTH? Delaware attorney general strips county sheriffs of arrest powers!! | Littlebytesnews Current Events |

Sheriff Jeff Christopher of Sussex County, Delaware, when he was elected to the office in 2010, thought he was handpicked by the people to represent them as the highest-ranking law officer in the county. Instead, he has found himself in the middle of a fight for the future of American law enforcement as a result of a nationwide effort to abolish the sheriff’s office altogether.

It is one more example of federal and state governments ignoring the will of the people as well state laws. In the case of Delaware, the state’s own  constitution stipulates that the office of the sheriff is a constitutionally created position just like the secretary of state and the attorney general. Delaware’s Constitution states: “The sheriffs shall be conservators of the peace within the counties . . . in which they reside.”

This time it is Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden, son of Vice President Joe Biden, sending out mandates to commissioners informing them that their sheriffs no longer have arrest powers. In an opinion released February 24, State Solicitor L.W. Lewis said that neither the state nor the common law grants arrest powers to the county sheriffs.

It would appear that Lewis is a little confused. The office of sheriff was created more than a century before the official founding of the United States. Delaware’s first sheriff took office in 1669.

littlebytesnews's insight:

This is insanity and should be illegal. Delaware Sheriff's stripped of arrest powers. Joe Biden's son is a tyrant see the bill that passed in June 2012!! ;

WHEREAS, the three county sheriffs and their deputies have assisted the State courts with service of process of court papers and documents, sales of real property, and other specific duties authorized in the Delaware Code; and

WHEREAS, the county sheriffs and their deputies have not exercised arrest authority; and

WHEREAS, arrest authority has been specifically authorized in the Delaware Code to certain persons; and

WHEREAS, it is the intent of the General Assembly to specifically state the sheriffs and their deputies do not have any arrest authority;

This bill makes the Delaware law clear that the county sheriffs and their deputies do not have arrest authority.

According to this it says it was passed and signed by the Governor on 6/19/2012

Were they preparing for the retribution to come as 225 sheriff's across the country say they will not enforce Obama's gun control laws??

Private Gun Buyers Ambush Police Buyback, Offer Cash Instead Of Gift Cards For Firearms | CNS News

Private Gun Buyers Ambush Police Buyback, Offer Cash Instead Of Gift Cards For Firearms | CNS News | Littlebytesnews Current Events |

Seattle, Washington police held a gun buyback program over the weekend for the first time in two decades, but not all the guns brought to the buyback were handed over to the police.

According to the Seattle Times, individuals gathered underneath Interstate 5 in a parking lot to hand over their guns in return for gift cards.

But, while Seattle PD was exchanging $100 and $200 gift cards for unwanted guns, makeshift gun shows sprang up on the sidewalks as gun enthusiasts offered cash to those standing in line.

Frustrated individuals standing for hours lost patience, making their way over to those surrounding the parking lot with "Cash for Guns" signs.

One man reportedly jumped out of his vehicle while sitting in traffic and sold one of his guns to a private buyer for $500.

Officers advised individuals to turn over their guns so that they could be destroyed, instead of selling them to collectors -- though it's perfectly legal for private individuals to buy and sell guns.

Seattle Police Chief, John Diaz was not happy with the wheeling and dealing saying, "I'd prefer they wouldn't sell them."

littlebytesnews's insight:

LOL They should expect more of this and soon it will be done in the black market more if people lose their legal right to buy/sell guns for their own protection.

Government Officials Can Still Own Assault Weapons Under Feinstein Bill

Government Officials Can Still Own Assault Weapons Under Feinstein Bill | Littlebytesnews Current Events |
Not everyone is exempted from owning military-style assault weapons under new legislation proposed by the Democratic senator.

Weapons used by government officials and law enforcement will not be prohibited by the law proposed by the California Democrat, which would prohibit the sale, manufacture and importation of 158 specifically named semi-automatic weapons and ammunition magazines that hold more than 10 rounds. Any weapons legally owned before the bill’s enactment would also be exempt, although those firearms would have to be registered in a national database.

In addition, more than 2,200 types of hunting and sporting rifles and manually operated firearms would also be exempt.

The ambitious measure seeks to reinstate and expand the federal ban on assault weapons that expired in 2004. While gun control restrictions -- typically extremely unpopular -- have floundered in Congress in recent years, there has been a renewed push for tighter regulations in the wake of last month’s elementary school shootings in Newtown, Conn.

General Charles E. Jones on reports of purging the U.S. military of ones unwilling to pass the litmus test of firing on Americans are true. | Littlebytesnews Current Events |
Need to read this Charles Jones III 4:40 PM (2 minutes ago) to dr_taitz,

Here is a portion of his letter:

Although none contacted know any more than this article, that went viral, most have their own opinions and don’t put it past a reality. As such people are adopting a heightened awareness
and those with a good overall feel (retired military) for the political crises the Republic faces have a positive mindset that the military if given the order to fire on mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, grand parents, friends and neighbors will simply lay down their guns or turn on those giving any UN constitutional orders.
Most know their Constitutional and legal duty not to engage against civilians, foreign or fomestic and the sever consequences if they do. It would be a treasonous mistake
to give an order to the military to go against the Constitution and the Laws. I certainly would not want to be in the shoes of any politician, elected or appointed, that issued an order to the contrary because the majority of the military would quickly with deadly force turn on whoever (civilian or military) was foolish or demented enough to go after Americans with military force for any kind of reason. I’ll also add that most Constitutional
Sheriff’s and Constitutional Governor’s would absolutely not join in such folly.

Deadly GM flu research that could 'wipe out significant portion of humanity' set to restartFlu experts overturn self-imposed ban on creating mutant firms of the H5N1 bird flu virusThey claim the risky research is needed to prepare in case it naturally mutates to human transmissible formBut leading experts condemn decision to restart research into genetically modified versions of the virus
Humans can only currently catch H5N1 from infected birds, but when they do it is usually fatal

Scientists last night ended a voluntary ban on creating mutant forms of bird flu, despite warnings that an accidental release could kill millions of people.

Research into H5N1 transmission stopped a year ago amid fears information about how to create potentially dangerous viruses could be used for bioterrorism.

The self-imposed moratorium came after two teams independently discovered how to mutate the virus so that it could be transmitted through the air between humans.

However, other leading scientists condemned the decision to go ahead with the research, with one warning an 'accidental release could wipe out a significant portion of humanity.'

Forty of the world's leading flu researchers voluntarily halted investigations into the airborne transmission of the H5N1 avian flu strain last January, following public outrage over the work.

Announcing the decision to resume studies in a letter published in the journals Science and Nature last night, they said the work would only be carried out in the most secure sites in countries that agree it can go ahead.

That will allow work to start again in key laboratories in the Netherlands and elsewhere but not yet in the U.S or U.S.-funded research centres, pending further safety and security guidelines there.

'We want the world to be better prepared than we currently are when an H5N1 virus causes a pandemic,' said Yoshihiro Kawaoka of Tokyo University, a leading researcher on avian flu.

'We understand the risks associated with our research and we take every precaution to conduct H5N1 virus experiments safely.'

'Should we be trying to engineer in the laboratory a virus so dangerous that a release could wipe out a significant portion of humanity? I vote no' Sir Richard Roberts, genetic engineering expert and Nobel Prize winner

He told reporters on a teleconference the research would boost efforts to develop global flu 'biosurveillance', early warning systems, as well as better flu drugs and vaccines.

Genetic engineering expert Sir Richard Roberts, who won the Nobel Prize for medicine in 1993, said the decision had been 'made by a small group of self-interested scientists' and made 'a mockery of the concept of informed consent'.

There are serious concerns that the H5N1 bird flu virus poses an enormous pandemic threat.

The first avian influenza virus to infect humans occurred in Hong Kong in 1997 in an epidemic that was linked to chickens.

Human cases H5N1 have since been reported in Asia, Africa, Europe, Indonesia, Vietnman, the Pacific, and the near East.

Hundreds of people have become sick with this virus, with slightly more than 60 per cent of those who catch it dying of the illness.

The more the avian flu virus spreads, the greater the chances of a worldwide outbreak in humans.

Currently, bird flu can be transmitted from birds to birds, and birds to humans, but not from humans to humans.

When it does pass from birds to humans, it is usually fatal. Scientists are concerned the same mutations needed to make it transmissible among mammals in a lab could one day happen in nature.

littlebytesnews's insight:

Not sure why they decided to lift the ban on something that could wipe out millions of people if it gets into the hands of the wrong people. I can see them studying it to try to find a cure, but I don't know if I trust those in control with a mutant form of the virus nor do I trust those who could get access to it.

I sure hope it is well secured and never released into the population.

U.S gets it wrong on Egypt again

U.S gets it wrong on Egypt again | Littlebytesnews Current Events |
Cynthia Schneider says protests planned around Egypt will reveal the deep divisions between President Morsy and the Egyptian people.

STORY HIGHLIGHTSNational protests against Morsy set for second anniversary of Egypt's revolutionCynthia Schneider: U.S. out of step, underestimates the anti-Morsy sentimentShe says proponents of secular democracy think the U.S. backs Muslim BrotherhoodShe says massive protests will show U.S. needs to align itself with the popular will

Editor's note: Cynthia Schneider is a professor in the practice of diplomacy at Georgetown University; dean at the School of Diplomacy, Dubrovnik International University; and a senior nonresident fellow at Brookings Institution. She is also a former U.S. ambassador to the Netherlands.

(CNN) -- Protests planned around Egypt -- particularly in Cairo's Tahrir Square -- on the second anniversary of the January 25 revolution are expected to be an explosion of dissent, revealing the deep divisions in the country between President Mohamed Morsy and the Egyptian people.

Opposition to Morsy's authoritarianism is broader than the world recognizes. In making accommodations for Morsy's government, the United States is -- once again -- out of step with the Egyptian people.

Egyptians may not know exactly what they want, but they know what they don't want. Although an effective political opposition has yet to coalesce, Egyptians from all sectors of society are united in their refusal to accept another repressive regime.

Egypt is on a collision course. An ever growing, if periodically discouraged, portion of the population opposes the government and Morsy's Muslim Brotherhood, and supports the revolution's goals of social and economic justice, accountable government, and basic freedoms, including freedom of expression and protection of minorities. Yet the government is moving in exactly the opposite direction, with its authoritarian control over political, social, and religious life.

The government's investigation of the wildly popular "Egyptian Jon Stewart" Bassem Youssef -- charged with insulting Morsy and undermining his command -- and the forced "retirement" of respected journalist Hani Shukrallah, editor of state-owned Al-Ahram's English-language website, are just two very public examples of the vice tightening on freedom of expression.

In fact, the Arab Network for Human Rights says about 24 lawsuits for insulting Morsy have been filed against journalists and activists since his election in June.

Many call the second wave of the revolution in the fall of 2012 the "Mothers' Revolution." Parents and grandparents went into the streets to protest the divided loyalties in their families between the Islamists (Brotherhood or Salafis) and those supporting a democratic, secular Egypt. In Egypt, secular means freedom from state control of religion, not nonreligious.

The clash between these two visions of Egypt -- secular with freedom and social justice, or a religious state run by the Brotherhood with its version of Sharia law -- played out inside families and on the streets.

Soldiers protecting the Presidential Palace during the December demonstrations were moved to tears when an Egyptian woman, referring to Morsy, shouted at them, "Why are you protecting this man who is pitting Egyptians against each other?"

Egypt and its families may be divided, but on one subject, all are united -- in the belief that the United States is supporting the Muslim Brotherhood-dominated government.

Visible in the throngs at the December demonstrations were signs opposing Qatar and the United States -- yes, the U.S. and Qatar were lumped together as supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood regime.

"This is such a historic opportunity to restore the image of the U.S., but instead it is putting itself in the same position as Qatar. ... And this from President Obama -- so disappointing," Riham Bahi, a professor at American University in Cairo, said, reflecting views heard repeatedly last December in Egypt.

Opposition leader and blogger Bassem Sabry was even more blunt: "With the Constitution in play, you are subsidizing an Islamist state." Sabry said he was always pro-U.S. "until the revolution."

In addition, the Pentagon plans to proceed with the delivery of 20 F-16 jets to Egypt, a step that looks to Egyptians like a vote of confidence in Morsy. Unchanged since the revolution, U.S. aid policy toward Egypt still makes the military alliance its priority.

littlebytesnews's insight:

Sadly I think they won't get the same support from Obama to have Morsi step down...I believe he wants the Muslim Brotherhood in control, he had to be a total fool if he didn't realize what was going to happen once Mubarak was forced out and now he is doing the same in Syria, supporting the terrorists rather than Assad. While Assad may not be perfect, he has been an ally to the US moreso than any Islamic jihadists will be if and when Assad is removed or killed.

December Gun Sales Crush Previous Records | Littlebytesnews Current Events |
If you’ve been into a gun store in the last month it should come as no surprise that December 2012 is being reported as an all time record month for gun sales.
littlebytesnews's insight:

This is the only area of the economy that has been prosperous under Obama. I guess you can say he stimulated the economy for gun and ammo manufactures. However, he is now trying to push restrictions on what types of weapons and ammunition people can own and eventually ban the manufacturing of certain weapons and ammunition.
