I've read the briefs.I'm sorry, but I still don't see how DOMA is constitutional.— Erick Erickson (@EWErickson) March 27, 2013
I don't understand why he would tweet this when he wrote a great piece defending religious liberty at RedState.com earlier...I hope he's not "evolving" too here is an excerpt:
‘Gay Marriage’ and Religious Freedom Are Not Compatible
The kids these days on the right are full of a great libertarian notion that “hey, let’s just get the government out of marriage.”
“Rock on,” say other libertarians.
They then all smugly self-congratulate themselves, pat themselves on the back, and move on to other issues.
What they ignore is that the left will never take marriage out of the hands of the government. The left cannot. But it goes beyond that. The left cannot take marriage out of government because for so long it has been government through which marriages were legitimized to the public and the left must also use government to silence those, particularly the religious, who refuse to play along.
Let’s ignore, for the sake of this post, that the Democracy of the Dead has settled for us that in society marriage should be between a man and woman as the best way to propagate the species.
The left has done an admirable job in secular society making the case that gay marriage merely allows a class of people to be happy and have what everyone else has.
The front on which the gay rights movement has failed is the religious and, in particular in the United States, the Christian front.
From Matthew 19:4-6:
“Haven’t you read,” he replied, “that at the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female,’and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh’? So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”
The Christian Left would prefer to view Matthew 19 as a passage on divorce, which is discussed. But they willfully ignore Christ’s definition of what a marriage is — one man and one woman united to become one.
As much as many would ignore, obfuscate, or try to confuse the beginning of Matthew 19, Christ makes it very clear. The Creator made a male and a female and the two become one. That is marriage in Christianity, despite what a bunch of progressive Christians who have no use for the Bible would have the world believe.
Therein lies the problem for the gay rights movement.
As long as there are still Christians who actually follow Christ and uphold his word, a vast amount of people around the world — never mind Islam — will never ever see gay marriage as anything other than a legal encroachment of God’s intent.
It appears Erick Erickson's analysis is contradictory to what he wrote when he was defending marriage as a union between one man and one woman because it is a religious sacrament and liberty, not one the government grants.
The role of the SCOTUS[Supreme Court], federal government and the states should be to protect our Constitutional rights, not limit them or alter their meaning. Marriage is a religious right that must be protected under our first amendment. Religious liberty gives us the right to practice our faith, whatever faith that is or isn't, based on Church doctrine and teaching not based on what the government wants or believes.
The Constitution and Bill of Rights protect our religious liberties and those who choose not to practice a religion by limiting the federal government from establishing a religion or denying individuals the right to practice whatever faith or non-denomination they choose. The Constitution does not give the federal government, nor the states the right to redefine those beliefs and limit our beliefs. For example, when the Federal government tries to impose laws such as Obamacare on us, which requires businesses and individuals to purchase a product or pay a tax/fine/mandate if we don't purchase that product or service then our freedoms are being limited.
Additionally, when we are also being forced to purchase something we may not need nor agree with when it comes to providing abortion, contraceptives and other controversial services or products, then our religious liberties/rights are being imposed on. Our liberties as American citizens are not limited by government but should be protected by the government. The role of the government, the legislature and courts is to protect our unalieanable right to life, liberty [including religious liberties] and our pursuit of happiness which includes our right to prosper, own our own property and to defend ourselves and our property. These are unalieanable rights, which means they are not given to us by government or any man, but are given to us or endowed by our Creator. Without the right to life, liberty and the ability to pursue happiness and prosper or own property we would be slaves to the state and limited to what rights and freedoms they believe we should have.
Therefore, to redefine marriage, which is a religious sacrament and liberty is to trample on the religious rights and beliefs of millions of practicing Christians, Muslims, Jews and other religions who oppose homosexuality and same sex marriage and see them as an abomination to our Creator. Non-believers might call this bigotry, but it is bigotry for them to want to impose their beliefs on millions of people when there are only a few thousand homosexuals who support same sex marriage.
Here are some examples of gays who do NOT support same sex marriage:

List of articles by gays against gay marriage; (granted not for the exact same reason, but well thought out ones nonetheless)
These are the groups of homosexuals the Conservative movement and GOP need to embrace and welcome to defend marriage and traditional values and win future elections. We MUST stand for our traditional values and core principles, otherwise we stand for nothing and become a mirror copy of the Democratic party.
