The future of reading is not reading

The future of reading is not reading | Litteris | Scoop.it

A few weeks ago I was able to read on Twitter a phrase that I found intriguing. The tweet said, “The future of reading is not reading”. I am a person who likes reading; what is more for several years now I’ve made my living out of making artefacts for people to read. So since seeing it on the screen of my mobile phone I couldn´t get this phrase out of my head. How is it possible that the future of reading is not reading?

We could propose several hypotheses.

If we assume a techno-centric stance, we could consider that the predominance of the image in our culture provokes the written word to end up displaced as the source for the preservation and transmission of knowledge.

The Rise of eReading: Are Books Going to Become an Endangered Species? [Infographic] | Litteris | Scoop.it

Nooks, Kindles, iPads…oh my! Whatever happened to paperback and hardbacks?! According to one source, people who own e-readers are reading more than they might otherwise, as reflected in rising e-book sales. As a result, e-reader sales continue to increase. Could e-books eventually make good old fashioned books obsolete? Probably not. One reason? For now, only 20% of e-reader owners say that the e-content they want is always available. But the number of people using e-readers is growing. Learn more about the habits of those who feel the need to e-read.

Do E-Readers Put Unfair Pressure on First Chapters?

Do E-Readers Put Unfair Pressure on First Chapters? | Litteris | Scoop.it

The other day I started a novel on my Nook that my husband recommended. I'd read other books by this author and enjoyed them, and this was a different series with new characters and world. I knew the basic premise going in, but nothing more. After several chapters I found myself getting bored, but probably not for the reasons you'd expect.

Since I'd never read the cover copy, I had no idea what the novel was about.

Total Boox is building a new platform for ebook distribution and consumption. A reader does not have to purchase a book upfront. He downloads the book into his tablet device, and pays for the portion he actually reads, when he reads it.

This revolutionary concept improves reader-book matching, and creates significant unique advantages to readers, publishers and authors.
