8 Promises You’re Making to Readers—and Then Breaking

8 Promises You’re Making to Readers—and Then Breaking | Litteris | Scoop.it

A book is a contract between reader and writer. The reader is promising to pay attention to the story and emotionally invest in the adventure. In return, the writer is promising to fulfill certain expectations about the fictional experience.

When we fail to fulfill this contract with our readers, we are, in essence, breaking our promises to them. These promises range from the big one at the top of the list (“I promise this will be a good read”) to a number of smaller ones along the way. Let’s take a look at eight common promises you may be making to your readers—and then breaking.

New study: Copyright extension makes works unavailable

New study: Copyright extension makes works unavailable | Litteris | Scoop.it

Does copyright help keep works available, by giving the creators incentive to make sure it’s around to be purchased so they can get money? Or does it hinder keeping works available, since there’s only one source who can permit it and if they’re not interested nobody can compete with them? That’s the question law professor Paul J. Heald set out to test in a statistical study.

Christopher Meeks: Developing a voice in your writing is a notion that passes over me every now and then like the "thung" sound of an error message on my computer. "I should develop a voice," I think. "My voice is off today," I think. "Maybe I should work on that voice thing," I think.

Genre Fiction and Digital Publishing: A Marriage Made in Heaven

Genre Fiction and Digital Publishing: A Marriage Made in Heaven | Litteris | Scoop.it

Along with the continuing growth of digital publishing (numbers for 2012 showed a 44.2% increase over 2011) has come, according to Wired.com, an increased focus on so-called “genre” fiction – sci-fi, fantasy, mystery and romance. Markets, which Graeme McMillan points out, “have traditionally lagged behind ‘literary fiction’ in terms of sales.” [Editor's Note: We disagree with this assertion. Romance, in particular has always had strong sales and often dominates the fiction market in real terms.]
