The Trials of Self-Publishing: Why I Consider It a Last Resort

Self-publishing feels so easy… It feels so safe. The sad truth of writing is that the fun aspect of creation is only really 10 percent of the work. The rest is the difficult and time-consuming work...

Dr. Debra Holland - Blog: An Agent Bashes Self-Publishing and Amazon

Robert Chazz Chute's curator insight, January 10, 2013 9:50 AM

This is a great post about new reality clashing with old ideology. As a  business model collapses, inertia drives some less adaptable people into a blind fury. As indie authors become more savvy, Gatekeepers of Necronomicon need to recognize their old incantations aren't keeping us in a worshipful trance anymore. We're awake and rising.

The "Amazon's destroying publishing" trope is particularly egregious. It's called capitalism and competition. Amazon started something that made them winners. (Their challenge now is to hold their lead.) The proliferation of books may not be great for traditional publishers but it does boil down to more choices for readers. Many traditional publishers blame Amazon for their demise, but I worked in traditional publishing long before Amazon and I can assure you many publishers died, not in battle, but of self-inflicted wounds. That trend continues.

Funny: Dr. Holland does not identify the fallen high priest, but authors in the know can guess exactly who the agent in question is. There's a certain famous agent who has made a reputation bashing publishing alternatives. He thinks he's making a good reputation with his dismissive attitude. He is in error. ~ Chazz

11 Essential Things to Know If You Want to Write Fiction for a Living

11 Essential Things to Know If You Want to Write Fiction for a Living | Litteris | Scoop.it

The Masquerade Crew outlines the long shot of making a living at writing. The point that I'd like to reinforce today is #10. No matter how good your writing may be, you still have to market to get your books out into the light where they can be read and enjoyed by hoi polloi.

I once attended a marketing seminar for chiropractors. Chirocrackers get a little shot of dopamine every time they do an adjustment. Hundreds of times a day, with each nitrogen bubble pop, it feels good for them to get that crack. But as far as marketing goes? Who wants to do that? Not many. And most think that since what they're doing is so good and helpful, they shouldn't have to do any of that dirty business stuff. Repeatedly, chiropractors say, "All I want to do is adjust. Let me get back to crackin'!" Sound familiar?

"All I want to do is write," we say. Mm, no. You want to be read. If it were only about writing, why bother formattting, getting a cover for your masterpiece and publishing it? You could keep your manuscript in a drawer, never put up with "business" and get all those happy dopamine bumps from writing in seclusion.

Marketing is essential and it doesn't matter that you don't enjoy doing it. Not many enjoy that aspect of the work. It's uncomfortable, but so what?

You're a genius? Great. Do the world a favor and stop keeping it a secret.

Insights, inspiration, and practical advice for writers

Great insights here in this post by fellow author CS Lakin. Learn at the Scoopot! link below.

I especially like that there is no secret formula for success. Well, actually I don't like it. I wish there were a formula. However, when I wrote Crack the Indie Author Code and Write your Book: Aspire to Inspire, I talked more about the details on how to do the hard slogging instead of suggesting black hat tricks to get backlinks or purloining disingenuos reviews using questionable practices. I'm sure I'd sell more books if I promoted those books as the easy answer to all publishing problems in five minutes or less.

Write more and better books: That's the single most reliable thing I can suggest that will actually sell books. That or write a tell-all about the celebrity with whom you sleep. (As Jack Nicholson said, "Wrong verb, baby.") Come to think of it, what makes my writing and publishing guides different is they're the funny helpful ones.

In my next post, I reconsider my stance about moving all my books out of KDP Select to all platforms. In the meantime, read Ms. Lakin's excellent post. Also note at the end of her article that she runs Writing for Life Workshops.
