“We are simply hardwired to stories,” said Pulitzer Prize-winning nonfiction writer Tracy Kidder.

Top writers participated in a panel discussion on the uses of narrative, and the deep human need for stories that amuse, surprise, instruct, and otherwise make temporary sense of a disorderly world.

Pitching your ideas to investors is telling a story. You need to get the attention and turn some heads. Hartman's tips are very useful, take a lookk and see what's in it for you. Standing up in front of a panel of investors, or a sitting at a boardroom table with a number of decision makers can be intimidatiing.

Versu and Jane Austen ~ Emily Short's Interactive Fiction

Versu and Jane Austen ~ Emily Short's Interactive Fiction | Litteris | Scoop.it

by Emily Short

"This is one of several design articles about the new interactive narrative platform Versu, which Richard Evans and I have been building with a team at Linden Lab.

"The first several stories implemented for Versu are written for a generally Regency-period sensibility, influenced heavily by Jane Austen, and less-heavily by several of her contemporary authors, as well as more recent writers such as Georgette Heyer and Patrick O’Brian. We did not pull quotes from the more recent authors whose work is still in copyright, but we were aware of some of the tropes that those authors have brought into reader consciousness."

In his last and final installment, Jonathan Gottschall explores what the future of storytelling is. Is storytelling changing? Is it morphing into something new and revolutionary? Are we evolving from stortelling 1.0 to 2.0?

I won't give it away -- you'll have to read the article. He has good points to make about 'revolutionary' literary forms, masterpieces, and our storytelling DNA.

I do agree with his conclusions and I know you will enjoy this article.

Share stories...that's what people want to hear.

Jim Signorelli's curator insight, October 25, 2013 7:54 AM

Annette Simmons,  one of the "Storyati," has a new weekly podcast.

In this, her second podcast, and while interviewing my delightful story friend Karen Dietz,  they talk about their connection to story, what it means to them and how they help others make the most of its power. Karen,  who claims she's more of a story scholar than a storyteller, does a pretty good job of telling her own story about some funny things that happened on the way to her doctorate.    Highly recommend a listen and subscribing to these podcasts.

"Jeff Vandermeer's Wonderbook: The Guide to Creating Imaginative Fiction is jammed with storytelling wisdom from some of world's top fantasy writers. Here's some of it.

"What the hell is a Story Lizard? In Wonderbook: The Guide to Creating Imaginative Fiction (Abrams Books, October 15), Story Lizards join Prologue Fish and other infographic helpmates designed to banish dry textual analysis in favor of a kicking, screaming, slithering approach to storytelling creativity.

"Author Jeff Vandermeer, a three-time Fantasy World Award-winning novelist who co-directs the Shared Worlds teen writing camp, says "The way we're taught to analyze fiction is to break down and do a kind of autopsy. But I think writers need to be more like naturalists or zoologists when they study story because then you're looking at how all the elements fit together."
