An interesting look at transmedia properties which have books as a key component.  In fact, Dynasty of the Magi has just won the award for Best Transmedia Project in the Publishing Innovation Awards.

Parker Donat's curator insight, January 22, 2013 7:30 PM

For business storytelling to be a success there needs to be a good strategy around making money. Given that eBooks and apps are so popular there is a definate opportunity to tell a great story using these platfrorms to create a more engaged community. I haven't bought this book but it seems to really understand transmedia and the use of muliple patforms. And this book, Dynasty of the Magi has just won the award for Best Transmedia Project in the Publishing Innovation Awards

Digital Revenue On The Rise

Digital Revenue On The Rise | Litteris | Scoop.it

While some publishers have noticed a leveling out on their digital sales, especially following circumstances like the hype over a particular ebook decreasing and causing a resulting minor drop in digital sales, others are still reporting record increases in revenue from digital publishing. According to an article from Journalism.co.uk, Future Publishing has recently seen a thirty percent increase in digital sales, thanks in large part to growth in the various platforms it sends content to.

Counting Numbers

I bet a few of you wondered what happened to me the last week or so. Well, I’ve been enjoying myself reading all the year-end articles. And it has been fun, to be honest.

One moment I’m reading an article about how traditional publishing is crashing, the next moment I’m reading an article about the profits traditional publishing is making.

Or I read an article about how B&N is failing, the next I read a report on how solid they are.

Or I read a report about how some indie writers are booming, and then I read articles about how everything is flat.

Or I read a report about how books sales in bookstores are down, then read another where bookstore sales are up some huge percentage.

(And I flat refused to read any of the silliness that comes with any mention of Amazon. I don’t even bother with that stupidity. Hate them or love them, I could not care, but take your comments about Amazon somewhere else, please.)

So what really is happening in publishing, both traditional and indie and in the bookstores?

Publishing houses, libraries and tech giants that offer e-readers such as Apple, Amazon and Barnes & Noble are all facing the same challenges in curating affordable, fast and quality content. It's a set of challenges that other industries, particularly entertainment, has seen before, said Geoff Woollacott, senior analyst and engagement manager atTechnology Business Research.

"They need quality content available in multiple formats," Woollacott told the E-Commerce Times. "They need to work on quick distribution akin to iTunes and what it did to the music industry. It menas a liquidation of a huge aspect of what has been the traditional distribution arms.
