I will never forget my first encounter with Utah Phillips at one of the Smithsonian Folk Festivals on the Mall in the late 1960s or perhaps early 1970s. He, of course, sang "Moose Turd Pie," and I was hooked! I never realized he was a mentor of Kate Wolfe's, another favorite of mine.

My grandfather, L. D. Gasteiger, attended this fair and told me about it when I was a teen back in the 1960's. I collect postcards from it. THE DEVIL AND THE WHITE CITY is a fascinating book, I hightly recommend.

Twain, the younger literary genius, reports on Charles Dickens' reading of his own work. I looked this up because I was reading BLEAK HOUSE, and some of Dicken's prose reminded me of Twain. Perhaps that should be the other way around -- Twain reminding me of Dickens. Twain obviously thought Dickens a great writer, although in this review he describes how Dickens was NOT a great reader.
