Guardian publishes In a Field ahead of its appearance in anthology marking centenary of outbreak of first world war
Gerard White's insight:

I'm struck by the final lines of Heaney's poem and the idea of being led through the gate "Where everyone has suddenly appeared, / All standing waiting." While I cannot comment as to whether Heaney was thinking of death himself, I can see in it an image of what I hope heaven will be. People suddenly appearing, waiting for me to arrive, those faces that I haven't seen in years ... those that have gone before.
