Lynnette Van Dyke's curator insight, May 1, 2013 2:31 PM

The Georgia Partnership for Excellence in Education fully supports the implementation of the Common Core State Standards in Georgia.  Best practice research tells us that the Common Core builds on previous GPS standards and improves them.

Our concern is around the high level of inaccurate information circulating about the Common Core.  They are not a national curriculum and these are not standards decided on by the federal government.  The standards were created by a consortium of states (led by Georgia) and local districts are still free to make decisions concerning curriculum, texts, and how their school system operates.

James magazine ran an abbreviated Georgia Partnership article in their March/April 2013 edition.  Here is the complete story which includes the Core's background in the state and a teacher's perspective (Georgia's 2011 Teacher of the Year, Pam Williams).

Check this Morris News Service article about Senate Bill 167 which would have required Georgia withdraw from the 45 state Common Core State Standards consortium.  It includes a quote from Georgia Partnership President Steve Dolinger.  The Bill was pulled from consideration before a vote as taken.  Growing opposition in Georgia signals a similar bill may be reintroduced in 2014

Response: Many Ways To Help Students Develop Academic Vocabulary | Oakland County ELA Common Core | Scoop.it

What are the best ways to help students -- mainstream and/or English Language Learners -- develop academic vocabulary?

Helping our students develop academic vocabulary knowledge has always been a challenge to us teachers, and the Common Core Standards "up" the challenge and its importance even more.

Close reading is and outcome, not a technique

Close reading is and outcome, not a technique | Oakland County ELA Common Core | Scoop.it

By Tim Shanahan

"The trick is to scaffold the readings and re-readings sufficiently to allow these students to participate successfully—they have to do the reading and thinking, you can’t do it for them."

Via Mel Riddile
Les Howard's insight:

Shanahan makes point that Close Reading is not a technique, rather it is an outcome. I believe that the Four Resources Model (Luke & Freebody) http://www.learningplace.com.au/deliver/content.asp?pid=17768 is a useful lens to develop Close Reading of texts.

Fluency is already an issue... how to balance it with text complexity is going to be a huge issue as we are shifting to the Common Core. How do we do this? Is there anywhere we can get this guidance?
