There are many apps that allow your students to read and interact with books on the ipad. For intermediate students there are endless options for free or nearly free resources. In french immersion primary however the resources are more limited. There are many picture books available for the ipad, unfortunately many of them cost money and only include 1 book per app. There are some other options for getting books of the ipad however. In my class I am using two apps: Itubelist and Rover.
I've posted about SpellingCity.com website some time ago and I had to take a closer look when I heard they had produced a free app.
The app is in many ways very similar to the website, with ready made word lists that users just select... - one - click on the type of game or activity they want to play; there are seven different activity types: Unscranble - Spelling TestMe - HangMouse - Spelling TeachMe - Missing Letter - Alphabetize - Audio Word Match.
To get the best from the app Functional skills, Family Learning and other Practitioners, really have to have a SpellingCity account as this enables them to import their own word lists and to manage and track their learners' scores.
That said, they can create a basic account for free.
If your learners' spelling and vocabulary needs some work, why not get them using it.
You can download the app from the iTunes store but, Sadly there's no Android version available at the moment.
Remember: Teaching spelling and vocabulary is easy with Vocabulary SpellingCity! Learners can study and learn their word lists using vocabulary and spelling learning activities and games.
VocabularySpellingCity presents evidence in support of the importance of spelling in reading comprehension in the reprinted article by Pamela E. Hook and Sandra D. Jones, The Importance of Automaticity and Fluency for Efficient Reading Comprehension.
Bring comics to the classroom with educational software that helps students create, share and collaborate on comics - without drawing a line. Use Bitstrips for Schools to teach reading comprehension, writing and digital literacy.
Mini-TFO videos are ideal for young French Immersion learners. The language is fairly simple, the characters are expressive and the topics covered fit well with many areas of curriculum. I love using the "Boite a surprise" early in the year when reviewing letter sounds with my students. They also love the songs, stories and poems.
For those of you who don't know about SpellingCity, the website enables learners or teachers to enter a word list and then automatically generate a range of interactive multimedia activities based around the words. The site automatically adds audio recordings of the words and example sentences to the activities it generates. There is a great range of activities that students can do within the site and they can generate certificates for their teacher or parent to prove they have done their homework.
"We previously covered the Eggy Words app from Reading Eggs, and we were interested in their new app focusing on spelling, vocabulary and literacy skills. The Reading Eggs Spelling app uses spelling and letter games for kids in Grades 1-6. Each app includes 10 spelling games that reinforce a different literacy skill, including proofreading, word endings and plurals, compound words, and syllables."
Literacy is changing–not at its core necessarily, but certainly at its edges as it expands to include new kinds of “reading.”
Digital media is quickly replacing traditional media forms as those most accessible to most 21st century learners. The impact of this change is extraordinarily broad, but for now we’ll narrow it down to changes in how learners respond to the media they consume.
