Tanya Sasser describes how she is using AXMA with her college English students to author IF and considers potential challenges the students might face. Along the way she's included a treasure trove of links to sites with information on how to best write good IF and to further examples of educators using IF.

Delmai George's curator insight, April 9, 2013 2:41 AM

Tanya Sasser's blog describes how Interactive Fiction can enhance game based learning by turning her college course into a game: the class as a text adventure.  She provides an impressive range of resources that will help students design their own text adventures as well as those who wish to understand what game based learning is all about.

Digital Play's curator insight, April 12, 2013 1:44 AM

Celebrating Us

This 10 week unit of work celebrating diversity has been written for English students in Years 5-9. It is built on programming outcomes  from the NSW English Syllabus: 2014.  It integrates the higher order, creative use of Web 2.0 tools & iPad apps. It utilises selected picture books from the International Children's Digital Library at http://en.childrenslibrary.org to encourage multimodal responses from our diverse learners. It has an associated blog with a wide range of differentiated tasks at http://super6plus.edublogs.org. The big idea underlying the lessons is that together we are stronger, diversity enriches us all and that WELCOME is a wonderful word. There are many more reading, writing and Web 2.0 tasks on the net than you could ever do- so select your favourites from the range of tasks on offer here.

This is a great electronic resource that could most easily be implimented into the classroom teachings of the alphabet. This resource would be displayed on an ipad for individual students or even for the whole class on an interactive white board. The 21st century learning focusses on this electronic interactive based learning. I especially like that the accent is Australian.

The New Digital Literacy | Think Tank | Big Think

The New Digital Literacy | Think Tank | Big Think | literacy australian curriculum | Scoop.it

In the 21st century economy, we are the programmers and the programmed. What does that mean?

According to the media theorist Douglas Rushkoff, author of Program or Be Programmed, people like to think of technologies and media as neutral and that only their use or content determines their impact. For instance, "Guns don't kill people, after all, people kill people." And yet, guns are much more biased toward killing people than, say, pillows — even though many a pillow has been utilized to smother an aging relative or adulterous spouse, Rushkoff points out.

Our widespread inability to recognize or even acknowledge the biases of the technologies we use renders us incapable of gaining any real agency through them, Rushkoff argues. We accept our iPads, Facebook accounts and automobiles at face value — as pre-existing conditions — rather than tools with embedded biases.
