When it comes to BYOD, it takes a lot of people to ensure success.  Most problems can be solved, but usually not on the spot.  A successful pilot is one that is planned in advanced and communicated with the people that need to be involved to make it happen.  Advance communication with other experienced BYOD teachers in and outside your district and seeing what issues they have run across may save you a lot of time, heartache, and headaches as well.

This is more fun at the public library then at a school, but communication or organization are vital for a successful program. Learning the device is definitely not the same as familiarizing oneself with apps, that should definitely be a separate program. Valuable tips.

What do you feel are the key digital literacy skills that 21st century learners need?

What do you feel are the key digital literacy skills that 21st century learners need? | Linked Library | Scoop.it

Digital literacy has become one of the major issues facing educators in this early part of the 21st century. The need to develop students and teachers digital literacies has become increasingly accepted as fact and yet most teachers' and students' understanding of what exactly constitutes a digital literacy still seems to remain quite vague. Even more vague seems to be teachers' understanding of how precisely we go about developing those literacies.

Beyond the Classroom: A New Digital Education for Young Australians in the 21 st Century

The new digital education environment will look and function very differently. In addition to classroom teaching, staff will develop new ways of teaching that embrace digital education, and ‘bring your own device’ learning models will be integrated into the learning environment. Strong leadership in schools will be needed to support this new environment, to increase teacher capacity and to support the uptake of digital education in schools.

Web tools to support inquiry-based learning

Inquiry-based learning is an active learning process, based on identifying relevant questions to research so that the student can develop knowledge about or create solutions to issues and problems.

Web tools allow students to engage in collaborative and interactive learning. All phases of inquiry learning can be adequately addressed through a wide variety of web-based tools and applications.

Excellent article featuring the thoughts of a school principal as she works with her school community to build new libraries in the junior and senior schools. I love her vision, "We felt very strongly that the library is more than a facilitating process – it has cultural significance which matters. The library can inspire" and "Our approach is unashamedly about inspiring a love of learning". I think the Cabinet of Curiosities concept is a brilliant program in stimulating students' interest and encouraging inquiry.

Is there no need for a common minimum? It looks great the idea of a personal "playlist" of education topics, but if education should not give you something in common with the people you leave with, how can we built a common thing a "res publicas". Which are the boundaries or restriction of a total customized education? Every one will have the same liberty? even little kids? Even poor people? Even people with disabilities who need help to learn?

DNA of a 21st Century Educator Simplified!

During your lifetime you have probably experienced inspirational educators, or witnessed inspiring lectures. But, what about you? Are you such an educator? If not, why not? In this talk, I [Zaid Alsagoff] explored some of the ingredients top educators in the 21st century have, and how we can learn from them to reinvent ourselves to reach our true potential as an educator. This talk was given on the 9 February (2013) at Jazan University (Saudi Arabia).

The Piagetian and Montessori idea of presenting children with a variety of educational toys and games suitable for their age and helping them to assimilate new learning is basically simple.  This is just the beginning..........

A global look at pedagogies for 21st century skills

A global look at pedagogies for 21st century skills | Linked Library | Scoop.it

Disconnects between policy mandates/supports and desired practice were found in most of the schools and all of the systems in our sample. For example, teachers were often being asked to innovate while being incented and judged solely by measures of the facts that students had acquired through traditional means, or given ICT to use without related curricular materials and models for ways to use it powerfully and effectively in subject matter learning. It was rare that teachers experienced standards, curriculum, professional development, assessments, and incentives that all aligned to support the development of students’ 21st century skills.
