Jeff Bertolucci of Information Week reports, The W3C envisions the Semantic Web as an extension rather than a replacement of the current Web -- a framework that extends Web principles from documents to data.
The USC Virterbi School of Engineering's Information Sciences Institute is working to bring art to the web in innovate ways. They will collaborate with the Smithsonian American Art Museum to create a more detailed information about art in its collection online.
Online users will be able to access records of more than 40,000 artworks, which will be converted to Linked Open Data (LOD). LOD is a system that tags and publishes information that is designed to be easier to interlink into what Professor Craig Knoblock calls "the linked data cloud."
I-SEMANTICS 2013 (www.i-semantics.at) is the 9th International Conference on Semantic Systems. The conference brings together both researchers and practitioners in the areas of Semantic Technologies, Linked Data and the Semantic Web in order to showcase cutting edge research, demonstrators and applications for the Corporate and Social Semantic Web. I-SEMANTICS 2013 will also hold the “I-CHALLENGE”, which brings to you the 6th Linked Data Cup (formerly Triplification Challenge), the Best Paper Award and the Best Poster Award.
You have created and published on the Web linked data following the best practices and you think they are now 5-star data. But are the vocabularies, RDFS or OWL classes and properties your dataset is using, also 5-star?
W3C Linked Data Platform and OSLC V3Date: Dec 17, 2012 Time: 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM (Eastern Time)
Abstract: This talk will review Linked Data and the path to where we current are with W3C Linked Data Platform working group. We'll investigate the technical makeup of LDP, current issues being addressed and proposed timetable for standardization. Also we'll look at how the LDP relates to OSLC V3 and what to expect OSLC Core V3 and related domain specification to look like in the future.
Speaker: Steve Speicher is an IBM Senior Technical Staff Member who focuses on integrations and change management. He is the editor for the W3C Linked Data Platform specification. He is the lead for the Open Services for Lifecycle Collaboration (OSLC) Core and Change Management topic areas, which delivers open HTTP REST and Linked Data specifications, as well as implementations. Steve is committer and project co-lead for Eclipse Lyo. He formerly worked on emerging standardization efforts in healthcare and compound documents (W3C).
"Having enough data isn’t the problem – there’s official data from the government, volunteer data, private organization data, and so on – but if you want to do a SPARQL query of it to discover all towns in the U.S., you’re going to wind up with results that include the places in Utah with populations of less than 5,000, and Los Angeles too – since California legally defines cities and towns as the same thing".
"After more than a dozen small PUBLINK projects have been graduated in the last two years , the LOD2 consortium is launching a third round, which also includes specific support for Linked Data tool developers, who want to integrate their tool with the Debian-based LOD2 Stack. The PUBLINK Linked Open Data Consultancy is backed by the LOD2 project".
Get this from a library! Linked data : evolving the web into a global data space. [Tom Heath, Dr.; Christian Bizer] -- The World Wide Web has enabled the creation of a global information space comprising linked documents.
These visualizations represent the linked data that has been converted from various legacy sources. Visualizations have been made with the Linked Open Aalto Visualization Playground that can create visualizations on the fly with the Google Chart Editor.
A data virtualization service that transforms data hosted in a variety of data spaces and formats into standards compliant Linked Data Objects for uniform access, integration and management.
The underlying technology is Virtuoso's in-built Linked Data Middleware (aka Sponger) that uses URLs as data source names for its powerful data ingestion and transformation services that result in highly navigable Linked Data Object graphs.

The Linked Data Benchmark Council (LDBC) project is officially starting now.
This represents a serious effort towards making relevant and well thought out metrics for RDF and graph databases and defining protocols for measurement and publishing of well documented and reproducible results. This also entails the creation of a TPC-analog for the graph and RDF domains.
"This W3C Note summarizes emerging practices for creating and publishing health care and life sciences (HCLS) data as Linked Data in such a way that they are discoverable and usable by people, Semantic Web agents, and applications. These practices are based on the cumulative experience of the Linked Open Drug Data (LODD) task force of the W3C HCLS IG".
