Letters from Abbottabad: Bin Ladin Sidelined? by Combating Terrorism Center at West Point

Letters from Abbottabad: Bin Ladin Sidelined? by Combating Terrorism Center at West Point | Martin Kramer on the Middle East | Scoop.it

This report is a study of 17 de-classified documents captured during the Abbottabad raid and released to the Combating Terrorism Center (CTC). They consist of electronic letters or draft letters, totaling 175 pages in the original Arabic and 197 pages in the English translation. The earliest is dated September 2006 and the latest April 2011. These internal al-Qa'ida communications were authored by several leaders, most prominently Usama bin Ladin. Bin Ladin’s frustration with regional jihadi groups and his seeming inability to exercise control over their actions and public statements is the most compelling story to be told on the basis of the 17 de-classified documents.

Al-Qaeda is still alive! by Mshari Al-Zaydi

What do the young men and theorists of al-Qaeda have to do with the Arab Spring? Why would the Arab Spring be a reason for the decline of these groups? Al-Qaeda and all those representing its ideology have other inclinations and dreams which have nothing to do with freedom and democracy. Al-Qaeda is still proceeding with its plan and course and will try and exploit all existing variables in its favor. With this in mid, there is nothing better than when a regime – any regime – loses its grip on power.

Lady Ashton’s Remarks by Elliott Abrams

Lady Ashton’s Remarks by Elliott Abrams | Martin Kramer on the Middle East | Scoop.it

Lady Catherine Ashton, the EU’s foreign minister, is supposed to solve diplomatic crises, not create them. But her remarks about the killings at a Jewish day school in Toulouse have created a storm. What she needs to do is say that in an off- hand remark she unfortunately left the impression that she believes there is any parallel whatsoever between the murder of Jewish children in Toulouse and the efforts of the government of Israel to protect its own children from rockets originating in Gaza. That she has failed to do this only confirms the view that she said what she meant, and meant what she said, in the first place.

More than 130 rockets were fired from the Gaza Strip, and struck major population centers in southern Israel in the last 35 hours. More than 500,000 Israelis are forced to stay in bomb shelters.

Terrorists are firing rockets into the cities of Ashdod, Be’ersheba, Yavne, Netivot and Ashkelon; as well as into the Eshkol and Shaár Ha’Negev regional councils. Iron Dome has intercepted 28 rockets.

Al Qaeda Is Doing Nation-Building. Should We Worry? by Will McCants

Al Qaeda Is Doing Nation-Building. Should We Worry? by Will McCants | Martin Kramer on the Middle East | Scoop.it

Al Qaeda's control of territory, in any guise, is a shot in the arm for its beleaguered followers and a small step toward its goal of establishing Islamic emirates. But let's get real about al Qaeda's gains: These are not yet states by any stretch of the imagination, regardless of the terror organization's propaganda. The organization's control of territory in weak or collapsed states is little more than a silver lining amid some very dark storm clouds for the global jihad.

Time to Stop Incitement to Murder—Again by David Pollock

In the absence of a political horizon for Israeli-Palestinian peace, Washington should quietly encourage leaders to refrain from incitement and hold them accountable when they step over the line.

Kramer on FB: Juan Cole, wrong again

Kramer on FB: Juan Cole, wrong again | Martin Kramer on the Middle East | Scoop.it

When terrorists bombed the car of an Israeli diplomat in New Delhi and Israel pointed to Iran, Juan Cole called it a “cynical allegation, which makes no sense… Tehran would not likely risk such an operation.” He pointed to Indian Muslim radicals, and urged the media to wait for the findings of Indian investigators, who “are first rate." Here are those findings. They point to Iran.
