How to say nothing in 1,200 words | Martin Kramer | Martin Kramer on the Middle East | Scoop.it

As battles rage in Damascus and a suicide bomber kills Syria’s defense minister and Bashar’s brother-in-law, Fawaz Gerges stands by his man. The idea that the regime’s days are numbered “should be viewed skeptically… regime collapse in Damascus is not a smart bet for now.” But then he hedges: “Though Assad's days are not as few as Clinton suggests, there are signs that the regime is not durable.” Therefore… therefore, what? Gerges has said nothing (http://goo.gl/Cshty).

By the Numbers: Jodi Rudoren's Palestinian Prisoner Article, CAMERA | Martin Kramer on the Middle East | Scoop.it

Even before Jodi Rudoren began her tenure as the New York Times' bureau chief in Jerusalem, serious concerns were raised about her objectivity. Here at Snapshots we said, "Only time will tell whether [those] concerns will be borne out." Unfortunately, judging by Rudoren's recent story about Palestinian prisoners on a hunger strike, published online on May 3 and in print the following day, those concerns are certainly being borne out. Below we take a look at the piece by the numbers...

Kramer on FB: Peter Beinart's Palestinian props

Peter Beinart’s tale of epiphany is dubious enough. He said he was moved to write his book by a clip showing a poor Palestinian being hauled away for stealing water. So here’s another Youtube, featuring members of the Palestinian’s family. (Beinart, the armchair expert, never followed up on the story.) They wish Israel to be blown away altogether. Beinart says it doesn’t matter to him. Guess they were just props.

Polite Letter Brought Israeli To CBS For On-Camera Outrage by Ben Smith

Polite Letter Brought Israeli To CBS For On-Camera Outrage by Ben Smith | Martin Kramer on the Middle East | Scoop.it

When the venerable CBS newsmagazine “60 Minutes” aired a segment critical of the Israeli treatment of Palestinian Christians last week, correspondent Bob Simon repeatedly suggested that Israeli Ambassador Michael Oren had crossed a line by contacting the network's top executive in advance to complain of a coming “hatchet job.” But Simon’s apparent shock — and high dudgeon — at Oren’s conduct were nowhere to be found in a letter he wrote the ambassador before the taping, and which was provided to BuzzFeed by a political operative not party to the dispute who said he shared it because he thought it illustrated CBS doubletalk.

The "As-a-Jews" of the New York Times by Elder of Ziyon

The "As-a-Jews" of the New York Times by Elder of Ziyon | Martin Kramer on the Middle East | Scoop.it

When someone like Krugman calls someone like Peter Beinart "brave" it illustrates how out of touch liberal New York Times "As-a-Jews" are. Bravery is to be an Arab and to criticize the PLO. Bravery is to be a Muslim woman and criticize how Muslims treat women. Bravery is to publicly protest in Syria. Bravery is to risk your life for your opinions. It is not bravery to risk receiving some angry emails. And as awful as the Likud seems to be when you read these "brave" articles criticizing it, the authors aren't quite scared that the Mossad will come and take them out.

'60 Minutes' vs. Israel On Palestinian Christians by Marc Tracy

'60 Minutes' vs. Israel On Palestinian Christians by Marc Tracy | Martin Kramer on the Middle East | Scoop.it

At one point, Simon notes the obstacles that West Bank checkpoints impose on Palestinian Christians, as though this were something Christians were specifically targeted for or uniquely suffer from. He thinks he is taking an original angle on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, but he is really just rehashing it and unfairly narrowing it in such a way that ignorant viewers may get that incorrect impression. While the show was menschy enough to air influential Haaretz columnist Ari Shavit calmly explaining what was wrong with the segment’s premise—namely, “Israel is not persecuting Christians as Christians. The Christians in the Holy Land suffer from Israeli policies that are a result of the overall tragic situation”—it might have actually taken Shavit’s words to heart.

The Future of Fareed [Zakaria] by Adam Kredo

The Future of Fareed [Zakaria] by Adam Kredo | Martin Kramer on the Middle East | Scoop.it

A CNN pundit who has advocated nuclear containment of Iran and expressed antipathy towards American democracy is said to be on the short list for a top diplomatic post in a second Obama administration—perhaps even secretary of State. That is raising red flags across Capitol Hill and within foreign policy circles.... Foreign policy experts on Capitol Hill and elsewhere warned that Zakaria’s aggressive defense of the Iranian regime, as well as his continued criticism of Israel, would lead to a disastrous shift at the highest levels of the executive branch.

Statistics and Moral Sense [re: “Which Countries Jail the Most Journalists Per Capita?"] by Sohrab Ahmari

Statistics and Moral Sense [re: “Which Countries Jail the Most Journalists Per Capita?"] by Sohrab Ahmari | Martin Kramer on the Middle East | Scoop.it

Allowing Mr. Martin to skewer the Jewish state using faulty statistics undermines CJR’s role as professional watchdog. But the harm done extends beyond journalistic standards. The ultimate impact of pieces like Mr. Martin’s is a softening of the reading public’s moral intuitions and sensitivities. By placing Israel on the same plane as the likes of Iran and Syria, Mr. Martin minimized the threats faced by journalists working under genuine authoritarianisms—not to mention the broader human rights catastrophes underway in these societies.

Kramer on FB: Chicago cub reporters, suckers for Palestine | Martin Kramer on the Middle East | Scoop.it

Look at the front page of Tuesday’s Chicago Maroon, the U of Chicago’s student paper. It reports an address by Amb. Michael Oren thus: “Israel envoy warns of Iran amid student protests.” There is a front-and-center photo of the protestors. Then read the article (http://goo.gl/WK84w). There were “roughly 15 picketers” outside the hall. Inside the hall (see the comments), there were 200 persons. “Amid protests”?

This caricature at a soggy blog called +972 was drawn by Eli Valley, the “artist in residence” at The Forward, and features Netanyahu raping Obama and eating his limbs. I guess there are people who think this is funny, satirical, or thought-provoking. These are people I would avoid.

Kramer on FB: Even the broken clock of Robert Fisk sometimes tells the right time

Even a broken clock tells the right time twice a day. Robert Fisk: “How many tracts, books, documentaries, speeches and doctoral theses have been written and produced about Islamophobia? The problem with all this is that Muslim societies—or shall we whittle this down to Middle Eastern societies?—are allowed to appear squeaky-clean in the face of such trash, and innocent of any racism themselves.” They’re not.

Unfortunate Headline of the Day [in LA Times], CAMERA | Martin Kramer on the Middle East | Scoop.it

Sanders, who queries Salah about his views on Israel's right to exist and on accusations that he is anti-Semitic, at least qualifies Salah's stated plans: "The former Umm al Fahm mayor told the Los Angeles Times that he is preparing to resume his campaign to organize Arab Israelis against what he sees as systematic discrimination." But the headline writer, undoubtedly limited by space constraints , simply lobs off the qualification, turning the radical Sheik who regularly incites into a kumbaya advocate of goodwill and equality.

Journalistic Malpractice [CBS ‘60 Minutes’ on Christians, Israel] by Adam Kredo | Martin Kramer on the Middle East | Scoop.it

Christian leaders, Middle East experts, and observers on Capitol Hill are crying foul on a CBS News report that they say erroneously blamed Israel for the persecution and migration of Palestinian Christians. The report by “60 Minutes” contributor Bob Simon blamed Israeli security policies for the outflow of Christian Palestinians from historically Christian areas such as Nazareth and Bethlehem.

Kramer on FB: Paul Krugman gives Israel the finger

Paul Krugman gives Israel the finger for its 64th anniversary. “It seems obvious from here that the narrow-minded policies of the current government are basically a gradual, long-run form of national suicide—and that’s bad for Jews everywhere, not to mention the world.” If you know the issues, nothing is “obvious”—unless you’re another presumptuous, pompous prick at the New York Times.

Israel Critic Rami Khouri is Upstaged by an NPR Listener, CAMERA

Israel Critic Rami Khouri is Upstaged by an NPR Listener, CAMERA | Martin Kramer on the Middle East | Scoop.it

At the discussion’s midpoint, Khouri aims his customary defamation dart at Israel in listing those he alleges are responsible for conditions causing the uprisings: “It’s not only the Arabs who need to be accountable but foreign armies that invade the region, occupation forces like the Israelis and others, the Iranians, the Turks...” Khouri added, “An overwhelming majority of Syrians want this regime to change” and suggested that the promise of the new leaders emerging in Syria and elsewhere – to respect human rights of all citizens – can be relied upon. But Khouri is upstaged by a woman calling from Pennsylvania offering a far different perspective.

The Enduring Antisemitism of Media Matters for America's MJ Rosenberg by Jeff Dunetz

The Enduring Antisemitism of Media Matters for America's MJ Rosenberg by Jeff Dunetz | Martin Kramer on the Middle East | Scoop.it

Despite his renunciation of the term "Israel firster," its the same old Jew-hating MJ Rosenberg, reinterpreting history, portraying both Israel and American Jews as war-mongers, and still believing Jews control the media and government. He simply stopped using one term; it is obvious he has not changed his ways.
