Random DNA + high-tech math = ‘universal microbial diagnostic’

Random DNA + high-tech math = ‘universal microbial diagnostic’ | Cibereducação | Scoop.it

Rice University scientists have invented a technology that could potentially identify hundreds of bacterial pathogens simply, quickly and at low cost using a single set of random DNA probes. Rice’s “universal microbial diagnostic,” or UMD, uses pieces of randomly assembled DNA and mathematical techniques that were originally pioneered for signal processors inside digital phones and cameras.

In a paper online this week in Science Advances, Rice’s research team used lab tests to verify that UMD could identify 11 known strains of bacteria using the same five random DNA probes. Because the probes are not specific to a particular disease, the technology provides a genomic-based bacterial identification system that does not require a one-to-one ratio of DNA probes to pathogenic species.

How to Give an Emotionally Intelligent Presentation

How to Give an Emotionally Intelligent Presentation | Cibereducação | Scoop.it

Emotions play an active role in almost all of our decision making. That's one reason why emotional intelligence, the ability to identify, understand, and manage those emotions, is such an invaluable skill.

But how specifically does emotional intelligence help us with our daily tasks? Here are three tips to make sure your next presentation is emotionally intelligent:

1. Don't get anxious. Get excited.

All of us get nervous before a presentation, even if we've done it hundreds of times. So take that nervousness and turn it into something positive: enthusiasm. How do you do that exactly?

Spend those final few moments reviewing your favorite parts of the presentation. Remind yourself why you're doing this, and focus on the value you have to deliver to your listeners.

Now, take that enthusiasm and give a talk that you passionately believe in.

A mentor told me some years ago to get over myself when it comes to speaking and presentations. She said that we are there to serve the room not to focus on ourselves. This short article will help if you are nervous about speaking or presenting.

3 Easy Ways to Record Educational Screencasts Using Your iPad

3 Easy Ways to Record Educational Screencasts Using Your iPad  | Cibereducação | Scoop.it
In today’s post, I am sharing with you some interesting tips I learned from Jonathan Wylie  to help you record your iPad screen and create instructional screencasts and tutorials. The first thing that comes to mind when thinking of creating a screencast on iPad are those popular apps such as Explain Everything and Educreations but the thing with these apps is that they do not allow you to record what you do on other apps. For instance, you can not open Explain Everything and go to Evernote app to record your screen there, once Explain Everything window is closed , recording stops.

To be able to navigate your iPad and record this navigation, you will need to mirror your iPad screen to a bigger screen that is your computer. Once you can access your iPad screen  from your computer, you can then use a screencasting tool to record your iPad screen. Here is how you can do it all:

Swipe is an excellent presentation platform. It allows users to upload their existing presentations or create new ones from scratch and share them live with their learners through a generated link.
Swipe works across different devices and browsers allowing users to project their presentation on a bigger screen and remotely control it via their mobile device.
They also have access to a number of features to interact with their audience and get their feedback through interactive polls. Other interesting functionalities provided by Swipe include...
► upload PDFs and images (no limit on file size),
► create slides with markdown,
► a responsive interface that adjusts the content of your presentation to any size screen, include videos (from YouTube and Vimeo) and web content to your decks,
► work with collaborators by allowing them to edit, present or just view presentations,
► get stats about who has viewed or is viewing your presentations and many more.

While we have come a long way from the days of phrenology, when personality was read by feeling bumps on the head, the neurological biology of normal and abnormal aspects of personality is only beginning to be understood. What is clear though, is that personality comes from a complex neural construct, shaped by genetics and early developmental experiences that influence the structure and function of the brain.
