Have Media Habits Changed Among Millennials and Teens? - eMarketer | Cibereducação | Scoop.it

Both the younger and older groups were considerably more likely to say they were spending more time streaming full-length TV shows and movies, and similar percentages said they were spending more time with short online video.

But the amplified video viewing didn’t necessarily mean they were watching less TV. Among the younger group, 40% said they were watching the same amount of TV as last year, while 35% said they were watching at least a bit less and 25% were watching at least a bit more. The older users (ages 18 to 34) were more likely to say they were watching more TV.

The study found that younger internet users are shifting away from text-based types like blogs and publisher sites....

What fake news is doing to digital literacy

Here are the key points the post summarizes from a discussion:

The importance of a civic role of digital literacy learners and teachers;
The emergence of new technologies and practices;
That there are multiple forms and responses to fake news;
Curation: libraries curate, but also teach users (or patrons) to curate content;
The importance of teaching critical thinking; and
Adding other information forms beyond text document: images, data, infographics.

The role of librarians may take on greater importance in this teaching of new skills and identifying "fake news."

Education technology is spreading fast, but there’s no recipe for success

Education technology is spreading fast, but there’s no recipe for success | Cibereducação | Scoop.it
This article was written by Nichole Dobo Many people are seeking the “secret sauce” for digital learning. As educators expand the use of education technology, they often face a tricky balance. These tools offer the possibility for innovation – trying something new in a quest to improve teaching and learning. But technology isn’t cheap, and the risk of failure looms. To assure success, many educators try to find and follow a recipe for digital learning. But many crucial ingredients can’t be found in a case study about “best practices,” said Julie Evans, the CEO of Project Tomorrow, a nonprofit organization that advocates …

Like other aspects of teaching, how teachers and students use computers, software, and social media is a broad conversation. We use words like education and technology as if they mean something they do not, school and digital tools respectively.

To educate means to lead etymologically. That means teaching is leading and helping students figure out what is appropriate use of tools. Technology is forming wisdom over time so the craftsperson (teacher) can have a conversation with, about, and through their tools. They grow to understand how tools limit and expand their teaching.

Make Stop Motion Videos on Your Chromebook

Make Stop Motion Videos on Your Chromebook | Cibereducação | Scoop.it
On Monday I livestreamed a presentation about making videos with students. In one part of the presentation I was asked for a recommendation for a stop motion video creation tool that works on Chromebooks. My recommendation is to try Stop Motion Animator.

Stop Motion Animator is a free Chrome app for creating stop motion videos. The app is free and easy to use. It does not even require students to create accounts in order to use it.

To create a stop motion video with Stop Motion Animator launch the app and grant it access to your Chromebook's webcam. Then you capture a series of pictures with your webcam and play them back at various speeds in a stop motion style. You can add audio to your video in Stop Motion Animator. Your completed video must be downloaded to your Chromebook as a .webm file which you will have to upload to either YouTube or Google Drive to playback outside of Stop Motion Animator.

Class Tech Tips: 5 Ways To Use Spark Creation Tools To Empower K-12 Learners

Class Tech Tips: 5 Ways To Use Spark Creation Tools To Empower K-12 Learners | Cibereducação | Scoop.it
This past weekend I had the chance to share tips, strategies and lesson ideas for educators looking to empower their students with creation tools. At the Tomorrow’s Classrooms Today Conference in New Jersey I led a session with ways to use the totally free, BYOD-friendly Adobe Spark creation tools. I first started using the Spark creation tools when looking for a way for students to publish their creations on an iPad, Chromebook, or any device with a web-browser.

If you haven’t checked out these three tools before, Spark Post is perfect for making graphics, Spark Video lets students make their own movies, and Spark Page is a powerful and easy tool for creating a website. Click here to access all three free tools or for links to download the iOS apps. In the list below I share five ways to use Spark creation tools to empower students across in any subject area!

Jim Lerman's insight:

If you haven't encountered Adobe's Spark Tools previously, Monica Burns provides an excellent starting point. The Spark Tools are very powerful, easy to use, and also FREE.
