Based on the headline and framing of the article, you might be tempted to think that the problem is that lecture is ineffective and that data might be able to fix it. But that’s not really it. (Nor is the problem that students are stupid and lazy, which you might get from the comment section.) Actually I think Samson himself nails the problem:

He is not shy about admitting where teaching falls on the list of priorities for most of his peers: a distant third, after publishing articles and landing research grants. “Instructors want to do the right thing,” he says. “They’re just busy guys, and they don’t sense that the bean-counting is heavily weighted toward the teaching.”

In that one quote, you get everything you need to know about why traditional instructor-centered teaching still reigns supreme on many university campuses, despite mountains of evidence, not to mention anecdotes, that interactive-engagement methods are far more effective. It all boils down to that one word:Priorities.

Most eLearning courses, and even adult continuing-education eLearning, involve an audio track, mostly as voiceover for video and also for animated characters. As a result, many eLearning professionals find themselves writing audio scripts as part of their work.

However, there’s a lack of formal training for instructional designers about how to write an audioscript that keeps the audience’s attention and enhances learning. In this article, we will provide 10 tips for writing better eLearning audio scripts.

Writing for voiceover

Writing for voiceover is different from writing text that a learner will read; it’s writing for the ear, not the eye. But when you learn to write for the ear, you become a better writer, even when you’re writing material for reading on a screen.

Tip 1: Second person

In English, this means directing the script at the learner and using the word “you.” You might also sometimes use a directive, where the “you” is implied. This is like a command: “Do this!” Writing in the second person means that you have to know who the target audience is and what they will do differently as a result of the course. Audio scripts are more memorable when you tell participants what they need to do and why. Listen to these two audio segments that demonstrate the difference between second person and third person.

The merits of online learning, especially in the context of MOOCs have long been discussed and we are all aware that Massive Open Online Courses offer a great level of flexibility in terms of time and space. MOOC Learners do not have to travel long distances to be able to access high-quality content from top universities in the world. Learning takes place "just in time" and "when needed". On top of these, I think being able to connect with people from all around the world is one of the greatest characteristics that MOOCs offer learners.

 

While Individual learning is still meaningful for those who prefer self-paced learning, I think the social aspect of MOOCs is a great learning value especially when different learner needs and styles in a single course are considered. Some people may need more social interactions than others, so those people need to be provided with the opportunity to interact with one another to get better learning results and satisfaction from the course. Social learning theories like social constructivism also emphasize this aspect in teaching and learning suggesting that knowledge construction occurs through meaningful negotiations and collaboration between people (McLoughlin & Lee, 2007).
