Sweden’s recycling is so revolutionary the country has run out of rubbish

Sweden’s recycling is so revolutionary the country has run out of rubbish | Cibereducação | Scoop.it
Sweden is so good at recycling that, for several years, it has imported rubbish from other countries to keep its recycling plants going. Less than 1 per cent of Swedish household waste was sent to landfill last year or any year since 2011. We can only dream of such an effective system in the UK, which is why we end up paying expensive transport costs to send rubbish to be recycled overseas rather than paying fines to send it to landfill under The Landfill Tax of 1996.

5 Eco-Friendly Social Housing Projects | Nathaniel Berman | AlterNet.org

5 Eco-Friendly Social Housing Projects | Nathaniel Berman | AlterNet.org | Cibereducação | Scoop.it

We are living through what the United Nations has described as "the largest wave of urban growth in history." Today, around 54 percent of the world's population—nearly 4 billion people—live in cities and towns. By 2030, the U.N. projects, that number will grow to 5 billion.

With such a crowded future in store, governments worldwide are struggling to provide for people who need help with housing. But it's one thing to provide low-cost spaces for individuals and families. It's another thing to make those spaces well-designed and attractive. In previous generations, many countries simply built square apartment buildings that were designed with one goal in mind: To accommodate the most people for the least cost. Indeed, it has always been challenging to make governmental budgets stretch to help all those who are in need of place to live.

But today, architects, designers, urban planners and housing authorities are increasingly interested in creating public living spaces that are cost-efficient, but also eco-friendly and beautiful to look at and live in. Some of the top new technology trends in these buildings include:

Tesla unplugs free supercharging perks for new owners | Scott Collie | NewAtlas.com

Tesla unplugs free supercharging perks for new owners | Scott Collie | NewAtlas.com | Cibereducação | Scoop.it

The ever-growing network of Tesla Supercharger stations makes it easier to own an electric car, but the days of Model S owners charging their batteries for free are almost over. Anyone who buys a Tesla after January 1, 2017 will be given a limited number of free charging credits, but when they're gone owners will have to pay for power.

According to Tesla, forcing new owners to pay for power isn't just about cutting costs. The company says it's designed to shape owner charging habits, encouraging them to plug in when the car is sitting still in their garages or office carparks. Although Superchargers are still there in an emergency, they're not designed to be the sole provider of battery charge on a day-to-day basis.

Small Farmers—Not Corporations Like Monsanto—Are the Key to Food Security | Vandana Shiva | AlterNet.org | Cibereducação | Scoop.it

May 22 has been declared International Biodiversity Day by the United Nations. It gives us an opportunity to become aware of the rich biodiversity that has been evolved by our farmers as co-creators with nature. It also provides an opportunity to acknowledge the threats to our biodiversity and our rights from IPR monopolies and monocultures.

Just as our Vedas and Upanishads have no individual authors, our rich biodiversity, including seeds, have been evolved cumulatively. They are a common heritage of present and future farm communities who have evolved them collectively. I recently joined tribals in Central India who have evolved thousands of rice varieties for their festival of “Akti.” Akti is a celebration of the relationship of the seed and the soil and the sharing of the seed as a sacred duty to the Earth and the community.

Warren Buffett Is Betting Big on Wind Energy in Nebraska, and Other Planet-Saving News: Juan Cole | Techdirt

Warren Buffett Is Betting Big on Wind Energy in Nebraska, and Other Planet-Saving News: Juan Cole | Techdirt | Cibereducação | Scoop.it

Wind power is on a roll in the US despite a fickle Congress and the machinations of Big Coal and Big Gas to keep all the subsidies for themselves. And one of the world’s most successful investors, Warren Buffett, has noticed.

As of the end of the first quarter of 2015, 13.6 gigawatts of electricity generating capacity from wind is being constructed in 23 states via 100 projects. About $23 billion worth of new wind farms are being implemented. US wind power is expected to double, at the least, by 2020.

BHE Renewables, a subsidiary of Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway, Inc., is going to open a 400 megawatt wind farm in Nebraska in 2016 that will increase the state’s wind-generated electricity by 50% and take the state closer to its goal of getting a third of its power from renewables. Nebraska currently has 800 MW of wind-provided electrical power. The state utility will buy all of the new production.

BHE Renewables, founded in 2011, has invested $10 billion to generate 3.4 gigawatts from hydroelectric, geothermal, solar and wind plants. Utilities make long-term agreements to buy the energy. Since the fuel for these plants is free, there’s money to be made in generating electricity this way.
