How to Supercharge Sales: Four Storytelling Plots to Eliminate Buyer Skepticism and Mistrust

How to Supercharge Sales: Four Storytelling Plots to Eliminate Buyer Skepticism and Mistrust | Cibereducação | Scoop.it

In their book Made to Stick: Why Some Ideas Survive and Others Die, authors Chip and Dan Heath argue that stories are powerful persuaders because of their ability to simulate and inspire. When writing that book, they read hundreds of stories to search for templates of stories that would motivate, energize, and drive productive action.

The Heath brothers identified three basic story templates: the challenge plot, the connection plot, and the creativity plot. Those plots are based on Chip Heath's research at Stanford University. I've added a fourth, called the cautionary plot.

Each of these four approaches can, depending on the specific circumstances, convince the buyer to accept change—i.e., be come amenable to buying the seller's product or service....

Jeremy Adam Smith

Karen Dietz's curator insight, June 9, 2016 2:19 PM

But when I read this post, I got excited because I hadn't thought about storytelling in the way the author, Jeremy Adam Smith, presents it.

It's easy to think storytelling is all about what happens in our heads. Or it's about stimulating our 5 senses. Or it's about engaging our emotions. Or it's about all 3.

Smith says storytelling happens through our bodies. Of course! Duh! But I hadn't really thought about it that way. He then goes on to explain how stories emerge from our bodies.

What a nice reframe. For sure I'm going to use it with clients in my biz storytelling work.

Storytelling and oral stories are vital to leadership and teaching. There are cultural implications as Beowulf (the example in the article) is not always a story explored in every culture and classroom. Still, we can find appropriate literature/stories as quests cross cultures.

What makes your brand special?

If you answered by talking about your brand’s unique advantages and consumer benefits, you've built a house, not a home.

Don’t feel lonely.  There are plenty of companies doing the same thing.  And they all have lessons to share.

Take Xerox for instance.  At one time, having a  Xerox machine in the office had become a necessity.  Instead of asking, “Can I get a copy of that?” it was commonplace for people to ask, “Can you make me a Xerox?” Having achieved a great deal of success, the company decided to cultivate other ambitions. For one, Xerox wanted to get into computer technology and data processing. They spent many years and millions of dollars before finally throwing in the towel. Why? Because they couldn’t get buyers to believe that a copy machine company could make a good computer.  In effect, Xerox found out that it was a house, not a home.

Slideshare is the digital storytelling secret weapon

Slideshare is the digital storytelling secret weapon | Cibereducação | Scoop.it

In my estimation, the reason why more experienced social media marketers gravitate toward Slideshare is that they eventually recognize that social media is about actions, not eyeballs. The “reach” offered by the larger consumer-oriented platforms is seductive, but if only a tiny percentage of your fans are seeing your posts in those venues, is the reach really reliable?

Slideshare’s audience is bigger than you might think, is terrific for lead generation, and is populated by people actively seeking information and resources (not dissimilar from a search engine, in that regard).

And that audience is hungry for information. It’s not uncommon to generate significant views and downloads for Slideshare presentations, including 24,000+ and counting for my presentation on reliable reach....

Part of my Transformational Storytelling System for businesses and leaders focuses on the ability to use storytelling to transform yourself, your company, your community -- or bigger systems like the world.

In order to be effective in transforming culture/community/world, awareness needs to be built around the narratives regarding business, economics, debt, power, etc. that we are all immersed in.

This relates to what we have discussed in class about culture because it mentions that the people are separated into different categories that are set by wealth and also by what the believe. I believe this article is very insightful about what the true meaning of proverty being reduced was just a fix. It is set at a superficial level. Also it talks about how it will have a "design science" for social change which i find very intriguing.
Hunter Reynolds's curator insight, February 27, 4:38 PM
We are all a part in our culture and this really relates to our chapter. I thought that this article had a good message that we are a part in our culture. This is an obvious thought but a true one. We can make changes if we work hard enough. This relates to our unit because we are learning about different cultures and everyone there is a part of it.

How to Create a Compelling Six-Second Brand Story?

How to Create a Compelling Six-Second Brand Story? | Cibereducação | Scoop.it
The reality is that you have six seconds to tell your brand story and make a connection with your customer. Yes, six seconds. A 6-second window to give your customers, your audience, a reason to care, and a reason to want to learn more about your offer. Success in those six seconds depends on the perceived value that your brand will bring to the customers’ lives: the “Why you do what you do.” This message needs to be always refined through the lens of simplicity, clarity and alignment; the three foundational pillars that a brand story absolutely must have to connect and engage with the customer.
