Blackboard / Moodle / Brightspace (D2L) Insight on LMS buying

Blackboard / Moodle / Brightspace (D2L) Insight on LMS buying | Linguagem Virtual | Scoop.it
This month, Eduventures released our comprehensive report on Learning Management Systems (LMS). In writing this Deep Dive on the most discussed segment of the education technology market, we wanted to go beyond simply reviewing shifts in market share to shed some light on why so many institutions have been switching vendors. In order to do this, we reviewed over 20 different LMS platforms and met with the vendors to gain insight into their product roadmaps and ask some tough questions about why they are winning (and losing) clients.

12 Creative Moodle Hacks to Supercharge your Courses

12 Creative Moodle Hacks to Supercharge your Courses | Linguagem Virtual | Scoop.it
When it comes to creating a course in Moodle, we often focus on the outcomes we need to cover and the assessments we want students to complete. And while these two aspects are important, there is another missing factor: the design of the course.

The Financial Times famously commented on the design of big online courses as … so boring you will have ‘blood pouring out of your eyes’. (quote)

The research also points to the need for well-designed, visual courses. In a recent study by Articulate, nearly 40% of learners found their courses boring. Other research points towards gamifying, with 89% responding they would be more engaged if their online course had a point system and was more game-like.

So how can you design your courses to be more visual, creative and engaging to the learner?

[Infographic] The next generation Social LMS | Linguagem Virtual | Scoop.it
Social learning has been in existence for ages now. Inherently, man’s basic desire is to observe, learn, and share. Today, social learning is more defined to the extent of being perceived as a formal concept. Leveraging the existing social learning platforms has promoted the culture of learning. Hence, the future of social learning at the workplace lies in continuous social communication and collaboration via personal and technology-enabled methods. The Next Generation Social LMS Infographic presents the 5 features a Learning Management System (LMS) should have in order to achieve desired results.

13 ways to use your LMS as a Knowledge Development Tool | Linguagem Virtual | Scoop.it
Organizations complain about the lack of the right human resources and training tools. Why? They do not see the expected results in performance. We hear too many companies complain of a gap between training and performance. They seem to have the required talent, the relevant knowledge, the needed tools and even the desired experience, yet they are unable to reach the company goals.

Extant research blames these failures on one element alone: lack of knowledge management. In this article, we present thirteen ways in which you can use your learning management system to manage your organization’s knowledge.

Let’s examine each of these knowledge management related complaints and prescribe a feature of your learning management system for appropriate correction:

Building an effective learning environment | Tony Bates

Building an effective learning environment | Tony Bates | Linguagem Virtual | Scoop.it

vlI was asked by the Chang School of Continuing Studies at Ryerson University to do a master class on this topic at their ChangSchoolTalks on February 17, based on Appendix 1 in my open, online textbook, Teaching in a Digital Age. I was a little surprised by the request. I had moved what had originally been the second chapter of the book to an appendix, as I thought it was rather obvious and most instructors would already be aware of the key factors in an effective learning environment, so I was somewhat nervous about doing a master class for faculty and instructors on this topic

What's Wrong With Learning Management Systems?

What's Wrong With Learning Management Systems? | Linguagem Virtual | Scoop.it
The LMS’s shortcoming, in short, is that it offers an incomplete, unsatisfying version of workplace development. Learning is not something that should be “managed.” It’s something that is sustained organically. When an organization programs learning at all, it should be to improve learner engagement, performance, and growth opportunity. “Learning management” is Orwellian Newspeak compared to the actual feeling of learning something in the right way, at the right time. Rather than letting people drive their own learning, LMSes micromanage the experience to no one’s benefit.

When learning is effective, it drives business results in a number of ways. It leads to continual performance improvement, for example. It engages employees and aligns culture. An LMS can’t do any of that. Sure, the interface works fine to push out content at a specified frequency, but it doesn’t attract anyone to use it of their own volition. It definitely doesn’t engage learners.
