Nicole Mirra argues that that without a clear learning model, 21st century learning is being reduced to the simple use of technological tools.

In the future, learning is going to be very different from today in many ways that you can hardly imagine. As technology becomes more advance, we use digital media to help us learn and the need of a live teacher reduces, thus in the future, we could even have home lessons where we can study in our homes and not go to school.

What Would Happen If Learning in School Became More Like Working at a Startup?

What Would Happen If Learning in School Became More Like Working at a Startup? | Cibereducação | Scoop.it

At its most basic level, a startup is a learning machine—one that helps its founders understand and serve the real world in a manner that enables itself to continuously gather information and grow. If it doesn’t learn and adjust, a startup ends.

They aim to do this by combining an extreme form of "peer-to-peer learning" with project-based learning. Both are popular methods among education researchers, but they usually involve the supervision of a teacher.

They complete a project using resources freely available on the internet and by seeking help from their fellow students, who work alongside them in a large open-plan room full of computers. Another student will then be randomly assigned to mark their work.

[PDF] Classroom of the future

[PDF] Classroom of the future | Cibereducação | Scoop.it
Will classrooms still exist 20 years from now? Do we have traditional classrooms in a physical sense anymore? What is the classroom anyway? For most of us, a classroom consists of four walls, ‘closed’ doors, chairs, tables, perhaps a blackboard, and sometimes a desk - simple but efficient pieces of furniture. A quick glance at the history of pedagogical practices reveals that the classroom has scarcely evolved over a period of many years. Is the traditional classroom intrinsically outdated or has it rather survived the test of time because it is already self-reconfigurable and has been adapted in many different contexts of use? Do we even need a classroom anymore? Do we need a teacher in the classroom? What do we teach and what do we want pupils to learn? What kinds of knowledge and skills will be required in the future? These are some of the questions that we should bear in mind when thinking about the classroom of the future.

Over the last few decades, our understanding of learning and the conditions under which it is facilitated have substantially improved. In most contemporary theories, learning is conceived as a constructive and social activity, as a result of which the roles of the teacher and the learner within the classroom have been redefined. Development in technologies that can be used to enhance and support learning has been even more rapid. Nonetheless, it would appear that the majority of the classrooms in today’s schools and universities remain unreached by these developments. In our roles as students, parents, tax payers, policy makers, teachers, designers, or researchers, the future of the classroom is an important issue of concern to many of us. It is certainly an issue that has the potential to fire one’s imagination. It is also an issue that can unite people from various educational and vocational backgrounds or divide them even further. However, despite the wide range of ideas and perspectives on this topic, multi-disciplinary efforts to design the classroom of the future are scarce. Our presumptions surrounding the classroom are alive and well and for most of us, classrooms are something very physical. We therefore need multiple perspectives to shake up our own traditional way of thinking about classrooms and to stimulate a real discussion concerning what the classroom actually is.

Faculdade chinesa terá graduação em eSports

Faculdade chinesa terá graduação em eSports | Cibereducação | Scoop.it

To advance Education, we must first reimagine Society

To advance Education, we must first reimagine Society | Cibereducação | Scoop.it
Why haven’t education reform efforts amounted to much? Because they start with the wrong problem, says John Abbott, director of the 21st Century Learning Initiative.

Because disaffection with the education system reflects a much deeper societal malaise, it’s imperative that we first figure out what kind of world we really want: a world populated by responsible adults who thrive on interdependence and community, or a world of “customers” who feel dependent on products, services, and authority figures, and don’t take full responsibility for their actions? The answer, he says, will point to the changes needed in all three pillars of education — schools, families, and communities.

Everyone is born creative, but it is educated out of us at school

Everyone is born creative, but it is educated out of us at school | Cibereducação | Scoop.it
Young children fizz with ideas. But the moment they go to school, they begin to lose the freedom to explore, take risks and experiment.

We spend our childhoods being taught the artificial skill of passing exams. We learn to give teachers what they expect. By the time we get into industry, we have been conditioned to conform. We spend our days in meetings and talk about “thinking outside the box”. But rarely do we step outside it.

The sad truth is that schools were never designed to produce creativity. Not many people are aware of it, but the education systems in the US and many other countries are based on the 19th-century Prussian model. Children were taught to obey, not to challenge or think creatively. That’s why you stand to attention when the teacher walks into the class. It’s why from the US to China, children wear uniforms.

The system worked well for blue-collar workers – people who clocked in at factories and stood on production lines making things such as automobile engines. But in a world driven by search engines, the system is a busted flush. We must teach creativity at school as a matter of urgency.
