What is the job like?

     Challenging, something new everyday, learning something new everyday

 

How much is starting pay?

     $7.65 per hour plus a $00.50 every 6 months - 1982

 

How difficult is the job?

     Worked long days, starting off is the hardest your the grunt of the crew

 

Is there a job demand for this field of work?

     Today's market yes, back in 1981 just hired as replacements for older linemen

 

Do you like you job?

     Took pride in yourself, your one of a kind

 

Do you do more work climbing or from bucket trucks?

     90% bucket trucks in my division different divisions differ

 

Do you need to be a good climber for this job?

      Have to be confedent, there is a difference between good linemen and good climbers

 

How much schooling did you need?

     Just get through apprentice A, B, and C and linemen A, B, and C

 

What is your favorite part of your job?

     The job planning- schedule or damage controll

 

How did you get started into this career?

     Thought it would be a neat job, always wanted to try it, always wanted to be an eletrician, my dad was a electrician

 

How long were you a lineman?

    28.5 years

 

Where was the best place you been for storm damage?

     Mississippi for huuicane katrenia

 

Do you like storm damage better than regular work?

     Yes something new everytime, "if I could go, I went"

 

What is different between today abd when you started the job?

     Safety books got thicker, turned more into product and safety then pleasing the costumer, equipement changed got better

What is the job like?

     Physically demanding  

 

How much is starting pay?

     $7.65- about 1987, much of pay is overtime     

 

How difficult is the job?

     Mentally have to be aware, no second changes, understand what you are doing

 

Is there a job demand for this field of work?

    Hired as a replacement lineman, same for today

 

Do you like you job?

    Most days, learned alot of new things, never got bored, new location everyday (almost)

 

Do you do more work climbing or from bucket trucks?

    Most from bucket truck, new guys alot more climbing

 

Do you need to be a good climber for this job?

      Yes, difference between good climber and worker, good work ethice

 

How much schooling did you need?

     No linemen school, had electrical experince but no linemen school

 

What is your favorite part of your job?

     Trouble shooting, going out of town on storm damage

 

How did you get started into this career?

     Liked electricity, went to school for a electrical engineer, no family in this type of work

 

How long were you a lineman?

   19 years as a linemen and 1 year as a meter tech

 

Where was the best place you been for storm damage?

    State colloge for 3 or 4 days

 

Do you like storm damage better than regular work?

     Yes, ran into something new everyday

 

What is different between today abd when you started the job?

     No FR wear, always have to be belted in never had to before, dielectric overshoes now, under FR wear 100% cotton, steel toe boots

This is a current teacher of mine. He was a former line worker at West Penn and Allegheny Power and now is a teacher the past 6 years Central Westmoreland Career and Technology Center. He is one of the main interviews for my paper.
