Stories by ELLs

Stories by ELLs | Limited English Proficiency | Scoop.it

In the past three years, co-creating projects of this caliber with Nathan, Rosana and other amazing educators; as well as working with ELLs with whom I started building strong bonds; nurtured the seed that was planted in the writing class. We were unknowingly becoming part of our ELLs’ stories of finding their identity and voices in English. The opportunities they were having to connect with the language were having a direct impact on them not just as learners but as human beings. ELL Stories were being lived and experienced right before us, waiting to be told.

The Power Of Visuals In E-Learning

The Power Of Visuals In E-Learning | Limited English Proficiency | Scoop.it
The majority of people won’t watch a video that is more than four minutes long, will click away from a page after just five to ten seconds if it doesn’t hold their attention, and check their smartphones an average of nine times in an hour. This really has an impact on learning. The traditional classroom format is quickly becoming redundant, as technology and e-learning takes over as the preferred means of training and development.

Nando Castellanos's curator insight, May 10, 11:11 AM
Since now a days more people seek to learn or practice a new language on the web, this web application plays an excellent role. One of the major factors that affects learning a new language on an application, is to have feedback on the pronunciation and this is precisely the function of "Pronounce Live". Thus, people can get an important benefit since they can improve their pronunciation without having somebody in front to correct them.

15 free games that will help you learn how to code

15 free games that will help you learn how to code | Limited English Proficiency | Scoop.it

"Online learning has come a long way in the last few years.

"When I started learning to code, the options were limited—lots of books (not even e-books), some very basic online tutorials, and a whole lot of experimentation.

Online learning has come a long way in the last few years. There are interactive courses, tons of online tutorials, and one of my personal favorite ways to practice coding: games.

While a game alone probably isn’t going to teach you everything you need to know about coding, it can be a really incredible way to practice the skills you’re learning. It makes practice fun. And if you’re anything like me, you might suddenly realize you’ve spent the last four hours reinforcing your coding skills without even realizing it.

I’ve tried out some of the most entertaining and useful games for learning to code. Check out my favorites below."

Open educational resources (OER) are found in the public domain and can be used for free for teaching, learning, research, and other educational purposes. These materials can be retained, reused, revised, remixed, and redistributed. These “5R permissions” of OER allow you to not only access the materials and resources free of charge, but also to make them even better. Sounds good, right? But what’s really out there, and why should you use these resources?

Is Your School Literate? - Modern Learners

Is Your School Literate? - Modern Learners | Limited English Proficiency | Scoop.it
While I think the “Are our kids literate?” question is certainly an important one, an even more significant one may be “Are our schools literate?” Is modern literacy something that is a part of our DNA, or is it something we try to “teach” as a separate entity using some off the web curriculum to pace us through it? I think you know that the answer, by and large, is that we’re not practicing literacy in schools in ways that either model or teach our students the skills they need to become truly literate in today’s world. Obviously, we’re not talking about a three week unit in the second half of seventh grade. And we’re also not helping our kids in this regard when we bring digital tools into classrooms and then employ them for traditional purposes. (The “digital worksheets” thing again.)

Two Free Speech-to-Text Tools

Two Free Speech-to-Text Tools | Limited English Proficiency | Scoop.it

This morning on Practical Ed Tech Live I answered a request for a free speech-to-text tool. There were two that I suggested. One was Dictation.io and the other was Dictanote.

On Dictation.io you can simply click "start dictation" then start having your voice transcribed into a text document. No registration is required in order to use Dictation.io. More than two dozen languages are support on Dictation.io. The video embedded [above] provides a demonstration of Dictation.io."

Jim Lerman's insight:

Both tools are simple to use and give good results. These tools can be so helpful in so many ways. A number of languages other than English are available to use.
