One of the problems with so many outline maps for classroom use is that, depending on your lesson plan, you might want it labeled, showing surrounding countries or in color...but maybe not.  This site lets you customize these simple maps that are perfect for the K-12 classroom (and yes, they have maps for all regions of the world).  If you want online map quizzes for a regional geography course, these are my favorites.  Here is another good site for basic outline maps.

Why online teaching liberates ESL teachers

Why online teaching liberates ESL teachers | Limited English Proficiency | Scoop.it

Inspired by her talk at Innovate ELT, guest blogger Jaime Miller of English Success Academy looks at the reasons and pluses for getting into teaching online.

During one of the mini-plenaries at Innovate ELT 2015, in Barcelona, Spain, Duncan Foord referenced a fear in the industry: that EdTech will render teachers obsolete.

Nothing could be further from the truth, and I say that with five years of experience teaching ESL online, and three years of sourcing 100% of my income from private Skype exams lessons for TOEFL iBT (without touching services like iTalki, WizIQ, or CourseEra). As our industry moves forward, teaching will inevitably change – but teachers will remain as essential as they always have been.

At Innovate ELT, I opened a discussion of the future of teaching ESL online with an observation about many English teachers and expats around the world:

How Gamification is Used in eLearning | eLearning Industry

How Gamification is Used in eLearning | eLearning Industry | Limited English Proficiency | Scoop.it

Gamification is a popular term at the moment and it can be seen in numerous and diverse applications. The simplest definition of gamification is that its approach is to add typical elements of game playing (point scoring, competition with others, rules of play) to other areas of activity. It can often be seen in online marketing techniques and approaches, as it encourages engagement with a particular product or service.

Gamification has marked benefits as it allows a business to meet its staff in a setting that they understand and with clear actionable objectives. In the field of elearning gamification becomes increasingly useful and it aids learning and information retention.

However gamification isn’t always implemented well and in fact, often doesn’t meet the desired objectives. Technology researchers at Gartner released a report that predicted that 80% of gamified applications will fail to meet their objectives by 2014. This is due to poor design, including meaningless points and badges, and has led to many gamified applications being considered as failures.

The question then is how to implement gamification effectively and to fulfill your desired objectives. Let’s consider the effective ways to adopt this practice and galvanise your training efforts.

Beth Dichter's curator insight, July 2, 2014 10:37 PM

Are you interested in creating an eLearning experience for your students, or are currently teaching online, but would like some tips to make your course more effective. This post provides 12 tips that will help you get started (or improve what you may have).

Below are four of the tips. Each is explained in more detail in the post.

* Understand your audience - To keep your audience engaged, you must understand their needs. Who are they? What do they require?

* Don't overload it - It is easy to add more information to a course, but this may overload your students. Be careful about how much is included and consider breaking information into smaller modules so that students can be more successful.

* Interaction to engage learners - Make sure that you design your course so it is interactive. Clicking quickly from one page to another may not help students learn the information. Encourage engagement through the use of quizzes, videos, and other interactive activities.

Much more is included in the post, and you will also find a link to a free e-book called Engage the Unengaged: How to Create More Engaging eLearning Courses.

Gary Harwell's curator insight, July 11, 2014 12:41 AM

We have to make that jump and actually put a course together. Not only for our program, but for us to learn some new skills that will be invaluable to our careers in the future.
