10 Problems at the Start of Innovation

10 Problems at the Start of Innovation | @liminno | Scoop.it

Many things can go wrong during the process of creating new products, services or business models. Let me give you ten examples from my own experience. You may recognize this as an array of all too familiar scenarios. If so, rest assured, you are not alone.

1. We´re not sure what we want.

Ideation of new products and services happens ad hoc, usually at a time when a problem arises or the turnover decreases suddenly or when a competitor enters the market unexpectedly. The first question is: “What now?” Then the creed becomes: “We’ll get Smith to create a list.” From this moment it becomes clear that any current strategic business plans no longer provide much direction for innovation. Ultimately, the lack of clear directives leads to random thought processes and frustration. Frustration because the management, further down in the innovation process, decided to concentrate on something else than what you were focusing on before.

I'm always finding myself stuck in a situation like the one described in number 6. I have so many thoughts, ideas, and plans written down all over the place (or in my head) and have no idea where to go from there.

How do you get past these obstacles?

Compare and Evaluate The Best Web Conferencing and Collaboration Tools

Compare and Evaluate The Best Web Conferencing and Collaboration Tools | @liminno | Scoop.it
Robin Good's curator insight, April 22, 10:29 AM

If you need to review and compare alternative web conferencing and online collaboration tools you should give a look to Online Meeting Tools Review, a web service providing basic information for 35 different tools.

I have already recommended this service in May 2012, but the service has been significantly improved and updated.

For each service included you get a review, a direct link to its home page and free trial offering, and an overall rating score.

With the Basic Comparison Tool you can review up to four different conferencing services side-by-side for no additional fee: https://webconferencing-test.com/en/compare-tools-basic

With the Pro version of the same Comparison Tool you can get up to 12 different tools compared into a report that is sent straight to your email without any cost. The only requirement is that you accept the option of being later contacted by one of the companies you have requested to be compared.

Free to use.

How to Actually Practice Multi-Tasking

How to Actually Practice Multi-Tasking | @liminno | Scoop.it
Multi-tasking can be done effectively if it involves simple tasks that operate on completely different channels in our brain. For example, listening to the news while folding laundry.

Via Howard Rheingold
Howard Rheingold's curator insight, March 27, 10:38 PM

"Task-layering" appears to be a kind of multi-tasking that works -- as opposed to the kind that degrades performance on each of the tasks we try to accomplish simultaneously.

Peter Skillen's curator insight, April 2, 7:52 AM

What I find interesting is the work Benjamin Bergen describes in Louder Than Words. http://www.louderthanwordsbook.com/ People often ask can we multitask as if there is a 'yes' or 'no' answer. Clearly, situations matter. Bergen points to research that suggests if we visualize or imagine certain activities - like hitting a baseball - the same regions of the brain are activated and engaged as if we were actually hitting that baseball. So even though we might expect the visual region to light up because we are 'seeing' something in our mind's eye, it is actually a motor region that is engaged. This, therefore, impacts our multitasking abilities for another 'motor' task. --> I love the rich texture of these ideas.

Comment réussir à mener deux types de cohésion pour réussir en mobilisation de l’intelligence collective ?

Via Coach HEC - Philippe Olivier Clement
Coach HEC - Philippe Olivier Clement's curator insight, February 11, 11:52 AM

How Leaders Can Build Innovative Organizations | @liminno | Scoop.it

The ultimate goal of innovation leadership is not to create followers waiting for instructions, but to awaken self-leadership in people and allow them freedom to work on their ideas, share their thoughts and take initiative to meet their targets.

Ivon Prefontaine's curator insight, March 28, 5:53 PM

Organizations led by courageous people, filled with courageous leaders and followers will be innovative. We need to move away from holding onto the past and pretending deck chairs rearranged on a sinking ship is sufficient.

Tony Brugman (Bright & Company)'s curator insight, April 15, 9:17 AM

Great article by Dutch innovation professor Jeff Gaspersz on the role of leadership in fostering innovation. In short: While organizations "underutilize the creativity of their employees", stimulating creativity should be a "core task in leadership" and "will become a strategic priority."

According to Gaspersz, innovative leaders...

"...will challenge our old ideas and stimulate our curiosity in discovering new and unconventional viewpoints"

"...encourage their employees to be courageous and give them the space to act and even break out of the formation"

"...are (those) who stimulates me to think along new paths, question my own familiar practices and challenge my existing assumptions"

Innovation: W. Edwards Deming and John Keats Got It Right Forbes How often have you heard something like this in hallway conversations: “You know, most innovation programs will fail.” It's the kind of claim that falls easily off the tongue:...
Gisele HELOU's insight:

The lesson in Keats and Deming may be a simple one, at least insofar as innovation is concerned.  First, we should focus on systems – in innovation we refer to ecosystems – and not on individuals and output.  Second, we should understand that the intangible side is equally as important as the tangible.  Combining these two dimensions – a deep understanding of the power of the system and a deep understanding of the power of the intangible – is what will lead us to innovative practices.  It is not one or the other.  It is both.  At the same time.
