Within the article, Grant Wiggins, the President of  Authentic Education, returns to his characteristics of authentic assessment.   He also takes a moment to differentiate between hands-on and real-world tasks.  For example, with hands-on you build; you create.  With real-world, the focus is on tasks performed via realistic contexts but that also include the messiness that evolves from simulated settings, such as working within one's own local community or trying to organize a new business.  Yes, on the surface it seems to be pretty obvious, but the terms are often inappropriately interchanged.

27 Simple Ways To Check For Understanding ~ TeachThought

27 Simple Ways To Check For Understanding ~ TeachThought | Like Learning | Scoop.it

"Checking for understanding is the foundation of teaching.Whether you’re using formative assessment for data to personalize learning within a unit, or more summative data to refine a curriculum map, the ability to quickly and easily check for understanding is a critical part of what you do. (Which was the idea behind our post last March, “10 Assessments You Can Perform In 90 Seconds Or Less.”)

"The following infographic Mia MacMeekin offers up 27 additional ways to check for understanding. Some aren’t necessarily quick–”Test what you learned in a new situation”–but there are a dozen or more other ideas that are worth adding to your teacher toolbox, many of which aren’t content-related, but rather cognitively-related (Locate 3 people who agree with your point of view.)"

One Billion downloads from iTunes U - Are teachers using it?

One Billion downloads from iTunes U - Are teachers using it? | Like Learning | Scoop.it
Apple doesn't really talk much about iTunes U, its educational content service powered by iTunes on iOS devices. But that doesn't mean it's not a success.

Via Tom D'Amico (@TDOttawa)
Principal dd's insight:

What's 'next' in our fast paced world ... minutes later becomes 'what's now' ... like most technology-connected innovations in education, it takes one person to 'champion' an innovation and run with it. But in the past, that more often than not happened in isolation. Teaching in the 90's was a pretty isolating profession ... teaching today is very different. One 'runner' has the potential to connect with 100's if not 1000's of like-minded colleagues ... amazing collaboration opportunities.

iTunes U is an amazing resource but requires a school-based 'champion' to take it on. Once it gains traction, staff and students will be 'running' together.

Ideas, a quick course and support for getting started with iTunes U were shared on educdemic.com in Dec. 2012:

Edmodo is an engaging familiar tool for the vast majority of our students. The goal is to provide our teaching and support staff with concrete examples of three things: 1. how it can address many of their ongoing frustrations with many of today's learners and 2. how it can, in the end, reduce their overall workload when it comes to assessment for learning, of learning and lesson prep and 3. provide students with different opportunities to demonstrate their learning for the same assignment.

Principal dd's insight:

I must admit ... Tom Whitby's recent post reflects what I have been saying about early uses of text based technology tools, 'a textbook on a screen is a textbook you don't have to hold' ... 'and not necessarily any better then the original'.

Technology integration without formal training and a formal purpose is usually a waste of time. Us 'innovator / early adopter' types will always fight through the glitches and persevere; but if we need the late majority to adopt a new strategy, its up educational leaders to make sure the purpose and the intent are equally supported through facillitation and guidance.

Ana Cristina Pratas's curator insight, April 13, 2013 10:02 AM

People who live and work exclusively within these institutions need to get out more. They need to see beyond an idea of education where the students come from cookie-cutter upper income homes and whose deepest problems are motivation, distraction and information overload. They need to get beyond facile debates about quality and enter the real-word debate around access.

Seriously, what else can be said about a statement like this: " it will be offered locally with teachers at a scale of between 1 to 20 and 1 to 50. Because teachers matter.” It's like saying "we must at all costs limit education to small groups of people led by a teacher." The "distributed flip", advanced as this Great New Thing, is the connectivist model of MOOCs, but with small-group in-person attached.

The app economy is booming and with the opportunities it creates, app development is becoming one of the trendiest professions.
Principal dd's insight:

Two reasons I like this on March 1, 2013...

1. There's something 'retro' about 'infographics'. Tthey make me feel comfortable, like RSA's graphic illustrations. Educationally they address different learner styles and more importantly, when students create them, the potential for collaboration and deeper learning makes for powerful engagement. They work. They've worked for a long time.

2. The App economy. 1,000,000 apps. 0.5 million jobs. 0 curriculum in BC's PLO collection. Perfect. Infinite possiblilties for developing a learning environment that facillitates, guides and supports students with an interest.

Principal dd's insight:

Blended Learning ... Shaken vs Stirred.

Maintaining choice and opportunity are possible with the right approach to scheduling, staff and elective program availability. Many schools have made the decision to really 'shake' up their delivery mechanism in the context of Blended Learning models, but we have chosen to implement Blended Learning in different ways for different students and programs. We are 'stirring' our own pot as we address both the needs of students, learning research and 'human nature'.

Innosight's Blended Learning graphic provides a clear outline of Blended Learning models and structures. It provides all of us with a straightforward picture of where and how we can incoroprate the benefits of a Blended Learning model. 'Getting there' ... now that's the challenge, journey and fun!
