The Stand by Stephen King | Light vs. Dark | Scoop.it
IngridSara's insight:

The plot of the book is about an advanced biological weapon made by the government that was released on accident and spread across America. This weapon killed 99.4% of the population, leaving only .6% left. The remaining population split into two, one side following a man named Randall Flagg known as the "Dark Man", and the other following a woman named Mother Abagail who received visions from God. The two sides prepare for the final battle between good and evil throughout the novel.

On Imagery and Symbolism in The Great Gatsby

IngridSara's insight:

In this analysis of "The Great Gatsby", Dan Seiters explains how Gatsby has the ultimate life that almost everyone would dream of having but yet there is still darkness involved. Gatsby is a rich man, he lives life to its fullest and is known by almost everyone, and is also thought of to have a perfect life. But according to Gatsby himself there is still darkness involved, there is still an unknown lurking around the corner, that unknown is Daisy. Gatsby is in what seems to be an almost constant struggle of having a great life with a different party of every night which, sadly, is the light within this story, and Daisy is the darkness that possesses his overall well being, causing him to be crippled by her selfish ways.

The Black Rabbit

The Black Rabbit | Light vs. Dark | Scoop.it
In this clever picture book, a debut author-illustrator introduces a plucky rabbit and the new companion that he just can’t shake.Rabbit ...
IngridSara's insight:

In this children's books by Phillippa Leathers, a small rabbit is constantly being followed by an unknown shadowy creature. The thing is scary and will not leave the rabbit alone, the rabbit in this case represents the light and the shadow the dark. The shadow scares the rabbit, it is something that is unknown and untrustworthy. The rabbit however is the light, it fears the unknown but feels as though it can overcome the shadow.

Above the Influence | "No Brainer" - YouTube

IngridSara's insight:

Drugs and alcohols are two things that are largely associated with light vs dark. The light park of the subject typically comes into play before the individual begins using one of the substances, they are innocent and also hopeful. The darkness aspect then comes into play. The person becomes ignorant, as in this video, he left his brain at the party and did not seem to care about what happened to his mothers car or how his father was reacting to what he did. Darkness also consists of despair, which is an absence of hope. The father in this ad says "I feel like i don't even know you", he has lost hope in his son, or at least that is what seems like happened.

Spider-Man's Black Suit

Spider-Man's Black Suit | Light vs. Dark | Scoop.it
IngridSara's insight:

Throughout the Spider-Man and Marvel comics, Spider-Man has been shown wearing his traditional red and blue suit. Typically red is a color that represents excitement, birth or sunrise, while blue has been shown to represent heaven, truth, innocence and even spirituality. All meanings that point to a lighter side. Spider-Man is also seen as a character that fights for justice, he is someone that believes in helping the greater good of the people by fighting crime and putting villains in a place where they will not bother the rest of society. Spider-Man as a whole is seen by society as hope. That being said, at one point in the comics Spider-Man is taken over by a black suit, black is a color often associated with chaos, the unknown and most common, death.  The suit changes Spider-Man's thoughts, and even the shape of the costume, it drains the life out of whoever wears it and even takes over the person's body when they are no longer wearing it.

I think this image is a perfect example of the contrast between light and dark as shown with the two different suits. I also think you did a very good job of explaining this and how it related to your archetype. Well done! ~Greg

Fall Out Boy - My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark (Light Em Up)

IngridSara's insight:

After a long time of the band being broken up, out of what it seemed to be nowhere almost a year ago, Fall Out Boy came out with the song "My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark." At one point of the song, the lyrics "Be careful making wishes in the dark
Can't be sure when they've hit their mark
And besides in the meantime I'm just dreaming of tearing you apart
I'm in the details with the devil" merely explain that who they used to be weren't who they actually were band and music wise, and "made a deal with the devil" for their fame. The lyric "Burn everything you love
Then burn the ashes
In the end everything collides" means that they aren't going to create music like they used to, so the old fans of FOB should "Burn everything they love" of old FOB and realize that the music they will be creating from now on is music that they actually want and enjoy making.
