Cycling is the New Golf

Cycling is the New Golf | Lifestyle Design Travel | Scoop.it

TRADITIONALLY, business associates would get to know each other over a round of golf. But road cycling is fast catching up as the preferred way of networking for the modern professional. A growing number of corporate-sponsored charity bike rides and city cycle clubs are providing an ideal opportunity to talk shop with like-minded colleagues and clients while discussing different bike frames and tricky headwinds. Many believe cycling is better than golf for building lasting working relationships, or landing a new job, because it is less competitive.

“When you play golf with somebody you have to decide if you’re going to beat them, or let them beat you,” says Peter Murray, a former architect, journalist and chairman of the NLA centre dedicated to London’s built environment. “If they’re a client and you don’t want to beat them you have to sort of cheat in order to lose. That seems to me not a good way of doing things.”

A 137-Mile 'Cycling Utopia' Floating Above London's Rail Lines | Autopia | Wired.com

A 137-Mile 'Cycling Utopia' Floating Above London's Rail Lines | Autopia | Wired.com | Lifestyle Design Travel | Scoop.it

Cars, buses, and rogue pedestrians are all conspiring against cyclists in congested cities, forever running them down, scaring them silly or simply getting in the way. It’s something designer Norman Foster — an avid rider — hopes to alleviate with a dedicated biking highway built above London’s rail lines.

The purely hypothetical but nevertheless amazing SkyCycle would stretch 137 miles in and around the city, accommodating as many as 12,000 riders per hour on a cycling superhighway 50 feet wide. The dream calls for 200 on- and off-ramps which, according to Foster + Partners’ estimates, means nearly 6 million people will live or work within 10 minutes of an entrance. Without all those cars to weave around and lights to stop for, travel times to and from work would be reduced by up to 29 minutes.

“SkyCycle is a lateral approach to finding space in a congested city,” says Foster. “By using the corridors above the suburban railways, we could create a world-class network of safe, car-free cycle routes that are ideally located for commuters.”

Putting aside the cost and difficulty of building a 137-mile highway above a working railroad — a point the folks at Foster + Partners sidestepped entirely — we will note that such a highway would be bike-friendly. The railway lines were built for steam trains, so the grades are minimal; the lines follow the natural contours of the land; and — most importantly — the space above them is underutilized, particularly in industrial areas. And according to the proposal, the elevated bike paths are also cheaper to build compared to traditional roads and tunnels. Not that there’s any space for new asphalt to begin with.

“SkyCycle is an urban cycling solution for London,” says Oli Clark, who brought the idea to Foster over two years ago. “[It's] a cycling utopia, with no buses, no cars and no stress.”

Dedicated cycling roads aren’t new, of course, and the bike-loving Danes went all-out with an 11-mile road specifically for riding and commuting. The road, built in 2012, even has air pumps along the way.

Benefits Of Educational Travel Show Later In Life

25 December, 2013: A recent article in popular American periodical Huffington Post revealed that teens and young adults who engaged in educational travel during their formative years are eventually able to secure better grades and, in the long run, a better future.

The study, conducted by a leading market research company, focused on adults who had engaged in educational travel between the ages of 12 and 18 and their further trajectories in life.

Results were conclusive, as 57% of the sample studied had managed to go on to obtain a higher-education degree, against only 33% of those who had not had the benefit of educational travel as youngsters. Those who did visit foreign places whilst growing up were also revealed to have acquired higher-paying professional positions, with the watermark usually sitting in the vicinity of $5000 (around £3000).

However, it was not just the numbers that demonstrated the benefits of educational travel. Members of the sample themselves recognised the value those early-age trips had had in their personal, academic and professional growth, with a vast majority considering these trips had definitely has a positive impact in terms of their trajectory in life.

86% of those who had travelled considered, for instance, that the visits to foreign destinations had helped make them more curious and inquisitive, whilst 80% said the trips increased their level of interest in the school subjects the trips related to. Over half stated that these trips had helped with their grades and their professional situation, while 34% considered that the opportunity to travel with school had helped make them better people. Nearly all considered these excursions fun, interesting and engaging.

It is possible, however, that the correlation between educational travel and better outcomes in life is simply related to a higher degree of motivation among children who choose to travel, or some other extrinsic factor. This is a possibility the article and the study also account for.

For the purposes of this study, educational travel was defined as ‘trips taken with school or family that incorporated learning activities’.
